I braid him every week. I would never ever clip his mane or shorten it. I have two mares also that are braided during the winter months and then they are not braided for the spring and summer.
I use conditioner on their manes because the mares seem to get more tangles than my stallion. Yes, it takes along time to do the braids but it is worth it because I know what their manes are like undone.
How do you manage with such a long mane?! Its gorgeous! I pulled my gypsy horses mane as soon as the summer came :)
