That's not really honor because honor is get over your fauls-mistakes and try to redeem himself of them with deeds... yeah sick fucking great mad loser writer !
@aridchimp Kamikaze means divine wind, you're thinking of seppuku. And the war was already over when he killed himself, in fact he formed his own private army of sorts and wanted to overthrow the government.
The first scene was located at Koriyama City Office in " Fukushima " prefecture . All of the building in Japan denied the proposal for this scene without Koriyama City. You can see this building now . It is used as a prefecture office . Famous retiered general ,Tamogami was born in this city . Of course no relation betwieen both .
I see many here are admirers of Mishimi Yukio.I can understand. He contrasts powerfully with "artists" and "intellectuals" of today who talk a great game
about speaking to truth to power, helping the poor and pacifism but are so addicted their affluent lifestyle that a spartan existence itself is a horror for them.FOrget about dying
It needs be said that Mishima was rather theatrical, he admitted that he became besotted with the Right because there was no space for him on the Left.
Yes, in fact he decided on making a movie about Mishima after a woman told himthat a character like Travis Bickle would
naturally end succumbing to type of self destructive masculine aggression as he was lower working class. To which Schrader brought Mishima who (according to him)
suffered a very similar pathology despite being of higher social status and a different culture.
@fexurbis123Yes, the same Paul Schrader who wrote "Taxi Driver", "Raging Bull", "The Last Temptation of Christ", "Blue Collar" and "Bringing Out the Dead". One hell of a resume, no?
Sun and Steel by Mishima is such a powerful work of art-philosophy. There was nothing tragic at all about his life. He triumphed by living and dying on his own terms. He fully deserves his mythological status.
@DarkprinX2500 He is shaking because it is his responsibility to behead Mishima after he commited seppuku. That person is also there just in case the person commiting seppuku loses his nerve so the guy
behind him beheads him anyway saving his honor.
I would be shaking too if I had such responsibility!
Paul Schrader said that the unusual visual effect used in framing Mishima's face (starting at 7:03) was done by simultaneously pulling the camera backwards and zooming the lens forwards.
THe Dolly out -Zoom in effect to my knowledge was first used in Jaws.It has become a staple since for showing a characters "collapse of perspective" ie dying, falling in love
Are the quotes in the beginning from Sun and Steel? I think it sounds like it but can't remember the book exactly. HERO MISHIMA, WE WILL AWAKEN THE SAMURAI PAST. ONORE E FEDELTA.
@gabsylv yeah it did, did you forget the scene where he's dancing at the bar with a man and the scene where the man comes to his house to find out why mishima is mad at him?
Mishimas family and estate cooperated with Schrader on the condition that his homosexuality would not be acknowledged.Schrader mostly alluded to it and added one scene in a
gay bar but this was enough for Mishimas family to withdraw their support.
@gabsylv Mishimas family still dont want to acknowledge his homsexuality. If they are in posessionof his memoirs regarding that cross dresser whose interview was the special edition DVD then not likely!

@HoboVodka - For some people it is very difficult to understand others. Sometimes they find it even more difficult to respect other people. In a way you could call that a kind of fascism. Just read one of his books, and you might understand why there still are so many people who respect Mishima as an artist, as a writer and as a person. Read his biography. Try to see everything in a historical context. And please stop trolling.
My first experience with this movie was strange. I watched it with an open mind and optimism. It was supposed to be a classic after. But for the most part i just wasnt "feeling" it. It was drawing to an end and for some reason, for some reason, the last minute (and the last minute only, starting around 7:00 here) made me completely fall in love with the film in its entirety.
Body and spirit had never blended, never in physical action had I discovered the chilling satisfaction of words, never in words had I experienced the hot darkness of action..................................................This is without a doubt the greatest film of the 1980's. You have to see it.
this isn't roy scheider narrating.

no seriously Mishima will forever be a legend for doing what he thought was best and not simply theorizing...he lived and died by his beliefs
to quote Neil Young's song Hey Hey My My "It's better to burn out, than it is to rust..."
