Can each track be recorded simultaneously to be mixed in a daw. i.e if i record a vocal, bass, guitar and percussion at the same time will each track be recorded separately in my daw or mixed down to 2 channels?

Absolutely! thats what the 2 firewire port are there for. Thats what great about this unit. Ive looked into it. Im picking mine up fingers crossed today. If not, sometime in the next couple weeks!
I am really thinking about getting the 1640i, the biggest kicker for me is that it works with pro-tools, but the presonus studio live looks interesting as well.
The Studio Live by Presonus IS a very good piece but it WILL NOT WORK wih Pro Tools. Unfortunatly, and rather sadly, Digidesign designs and developes their software to only recognize interfaces that are made by Digidesign for all of their LE versions of ProTools.
Yes, 16x16 is new. You can also choose to record the EQ or not. Previously this was only pre-EQ. PT compatibility is new, of course. Plus, it come with FW built in and cost just about the same as the older one WITHOUT the FW option. The D/A and A/D converters and summing bus are also upgraded, which really adds to the sonic capabilities.
I wish mackie would showcase the difference between the older standard Onyx 1640. As far as I can tell, just the integrated firewire, firewire returns, and all switchable auxes seem to be the only noticable changes?

@JuradoMike Yes. My band uses the ONYX mixer to do live recordings with individual tracks on the DAW (Logic, Cubase, etc).

@terryfink If you want to talk to the artist over mic to his headphones, it makes a separate routing for this job.

The older one is not 16x16, 16x2. New one u can send 16 ch. from DAW onto board.
New one works with Pro Tools, old didn't.
New one can use your plugin as FX on the board, old one doesn't.
New one rotates.
And of course the firewire integration.
