My favorite NES game EVER. Unbelievably good. The music is unforgettable, the story and game is epic, and wow... all these years I remember all of this. It had this really sad underlying feel to it the whole game.
Not a bad way to beat him.I went at him with the dual shot weapon and a ton of enemy erasers to waste him,This was a great game and I think it needs to be brought back right,
IMO, the hardest NES game, which I still havent beat after all these years[i first owned TGL in 1989/1990!] but it is such an awesome game, setting. music, gameplay. I know it is similar to Metroid and imagine if they did an "3-D Adventure" Guardian Legend similar to Metroid Prime, that would be awesome. I enjoy your vids and collections ArtificialRaven, thank you ^_^
Ever played it? No? If so then try to get it and play, it's simply EPIC!
...too bad that with the weapon used here you don't see the overall complexity of the gameplay... just check out any other review, you'll see what i mean.
But,, if you did play it and still think it sux... then well, go screw yourself ;)
The trick to winning this without "being lucky" is actually using the flash weapon when you run out of chips, there are so many clustered missiles that they turn to chips/life.
the boss is actually pretty easy once you power up alot.
there's a trick when u are low in energy or power just use enemy erasers to zap his bullets and in no time at all there will be bunch of energy and power ups left on the screen from the destroyed bullets. pick them up to refill and blast away again
damn i think that's the fastest i've ever seen that boss be beatin.. WOW... i have to say this is one of my Fav Nes games of all time.. got this game when i was 3 and didnt beat it till i was 12.. now i walk through it like nothin
I've been watching a lot of your videos- you and I seem to share similar taste in games. Anyway, I'm glad to see someone else who appreciates The Guardian Legend and Crystalis. They're two of the most overlooked games in the NES library.
@TinyTank2 Wow, nice... You just mentioned my two favorite NES games of all time. Nice! It's so true, they're horribly underrated... Anyways, I'm an indie game developer who's making a spiritual sequel to The Guardian Legend. Feel free to keep in touch/subscribe if you're interested :)
Classic game. Even loved the Commercial. I finished this one fast, i think i was playing Castlevania 3 or Milon Secret Castle, wait no, it was Fenster's Quest.
Can't say anything about TGL, because I didn't play it a lot, since I like the most RPG part of this game.
But I am sure the most anoying boss is big eye that makes long walls. It shoots also so it is hard to avoid both vertical walls and his normal shoots. And if you touch the wall you take huge damage (like a half or more)
This game brings back so many memories. I remember playing when I was like 8, and did pretty bad. I wish I can play it now. Still looks like so much fun.
Final boss is pretty damn easy compared to some others... Red Grimgrin being possibly the hardest. These two are so similar though, just use fireball and in case of low hp, spam enemy erasers till you get a proper healing item.

This game has special meaning to me heres why it was given to me at Childrens Hospital in L.A. by a kid I don't remember his name who had cancer and he had a Nintendo in the room that we shared he said it was too hard for him to play so he offer to give it to me to see if I could beat it I made it my Quest to beat this awsome game not just for me but also for him which I did and until this day I still remember him. When he left he told me thanks for beating this and that I was his Guardian.
I ment he left the hospital and I now remember his name it was Jeremy I would say he was better. Being so young one doesn't really understand what cancer is I pray to God he is in the best of health along with his Loved one's. So many great memories thanks to Nintendo now lets get back to Metroid on the Wii it being the closest to "The Guardian Legend" and continue making memories.

however i think this boss is on the contrary rather easy if you are low on life use the light charges i normally have 255 by the time i get to him the stuff he shoots can be made into life boxes with the light charges
Really a game that went to my heart. It's a really different mix and not really my type of game. But some real interesting music. Actually mixed the ( I can't remember how to describe) theme toghether and made it as sms signal. Annoyed my ex-girlfriend to insanity. That together with Kid Icarus - Stage 2 as alarm signal was a tear apart for her. :)
in my opinion the greatest nintendo game ever, and one of the greatest games of all time going into to 2009. im from the old school, does anyone remember where the cover of the game is from? i seem to remember when i was a kid this cover being the cover of a horror movie. the only difference was that on the cover of the horror movie, the little face on top between the eyes was not on there.
Interesting, I always used the Repeller (the one that spins in a circle while going forward, I think that's what it's called) up the edges, and stayed in the upper left or right corner just like you did. The Repeller has the side effect of killing stuff around you more easily, but it takes a WHOLE lot longer to kill the guy. Your method works a lot better :)

Nice job! I just beat this game for the first time today after buying earlier in the week for like $5. I used the grenade weapon on the last boss, it worked really well. Just hang in the upper-left corner and keep slinging them to the right.
The huge explosion kills most projectiles or any enemies that try to attack, not only protecting you but giving you more chances for health. This was a good game, I think I'm going to try out Broderbund's Battle of Olympus next.
Wow I never thought of using the grenade lol. I found it to be rather useless but I'll look into it. As far as Battle of Olympus goes, If you thought this game was hard, It's nothing compared to that game. It uses the same whatever as Nintendo's Zelda 2, except much more detailed. confusing and harder.
Of the three games: Battle of Olympus, Zelda 2 and Guardian Legen, the last one is the only one I played through. The Hades of Boo was just too frustrating: I went in, was hit by the first bat, fell by it in the abyss, died and switched off the game - forever). As for Zelda: I made it through to the last castle - I even met this super blob (or whatever) - but somewhere in the middle I lost the drive.
Aynway. I still have all three games and, one day, I will show these bastards...
Legacy of the wizard is frustrating to me when I was young I beat it but now I can't remember how to free that damn dragon that you are supposed to fight to end the game. Same thing goes for castlevania 2 simon's quest I just be going in circles and can't remember how I got to dracula's castle all them years ago.
Yup! It's because they used sprites on a final boss. But NES is capable of processing much more objects than rendering them. PC-Engine for an example had 8-bit CPU too but it had 16-bit graphic chip and it worked good!
From what I recall reading somewhere, it's because they're displaying more sprites per scanline than the nes can handle. It's not so bad in the game overall but this particular boss was esp. flickerifick ;)
Easily one of the best NES games. Also among the lamest endings of any game, ever. Especially with how long it takes to beat. Long for the time, anyway...
The endings pretty good. I don't know what more you could expect, Naju is destroyed and the leader is too. The heroine leaves for earth to recieve a warm welcome from her superiors. Seems like a good ending to me.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Man I could never beat that Game and after seeing that, I now realize that I wasted most of my time with that Game because the ending is so GAY(Even though I like the pic of the main character, shes quite a looker)
that seeker missle is what I use also in the beginning and if i need heath i cheat and use the enemy eraser to kill all the things the boss throws at me then when he turns yellow i just sit back and erase enemies all the while shooting him with my normal gun with full chips it hits the side of him
This game was a tough one, but I don't think the final boss 'extremely' hard, just very difficult. I didn't even get to throw my controller at the TV screen in raging anger. I just might've gotten lucky back then, but I got through it at the first time I fought it.
Huh, good strategy. The way I did it long ago was the cutter laser, moving away from him whenever I needed a health recharge...it wasn't the easy way, to understate it.
unless you use the TGL code to just to play the shooter part. it is kinda hard..
but if you play the regular game and go through the regular overworld it's easy. just collect all the powerups in that the overworld and goto the shooter sequence last and it will be easy because u are powered up.
It is certainly among the hardest bosses I fought. Especially when he goes red. Samus Aran is the best female in NES,but this picture of Miria at the end must be the best female shot on the console. =)
WOW I would expected to see an ending sequence rather then directly to the ending credits. Still though one great game. Classic games RULEZ as usual and always will.
Actually there's an ending sequence that is just before the final boss, with the planet Naju exploding. If you turn the lights off while watching, just hope you don't get a seizure from it... hehehe.
I got this game along with Journey to Silius & Air Fortress for Christmas once when I was a little kid. BEST 3 NES GAMES I ever had. Memories. =3

Tough problem with grenades is that they did quite little damage and are quite hard to throw especially if you get stuck in corner.

I did the same thing, i trade in my nintendo for a Sega.
I was only 12 years old at that time so i didn´t now what a big misstake i made.
If i new better i would never have done that, not that the sega sucks but the Nes is like the holy graal these days.
Well the boss walkthrough is something i wanted to do for some time but didn´t really have the time to.
Belive it or not but it only took me 7 or 8 days of practice to do that walkthrough, but it was hard as hell i must say.

So best of luck. Thx for the comment :P

Same thing goes for castlevania 2 simon's quest I just be going in circles and can't remember how I got to dracula's castle all them years ago.

wow, thats a lot of flicker.

Yup! It's because they used sprites on a final boss. But NES is capable of processing much more objects than rendering them. PC-Engine for an example had 8-bit CPU too but it had 16-bit graphic chip and it worked good!
artman40 3 years ago
From what I recall reading somewhere, it's because they're displaying more sprites per scanline than the nes can handle. It's not so bad in the game overall but this particular boss was esp. flickerifick ;)
Yeah the PC Engine seems made for shooters.

i just hate that the codes is so fucking long 32 letters for a code i would allways get them wrong

Easily one of the best NES games. Also among the lamest endings of any game, ever. Especially with how long it takes to beat. Long for the time, anyway...
schuyler7 4 years ago
The endings pretty good. I don't know what more you could expect, Naju is destroyed and the leader is too. The heroine leaves for earth to recieve a warm welcome from her superiors. Seems like a good ending to me.

I just might've gotten lucky back then, but I got through it at the first time I fought it.
lmphk 4 years ago
Huh, good strategy. The way I did it long ago was the cutter laser, moving away from him whenever I needed a health recharge...it wasn't the easy way, to understate it.

one of the best games ever made. i really pray for a sequel or remake. :)
johanneszero1990 4 years ago
you guys that said the game is hard are whussy..
unless you use the TGL code to just to play the shooter part. it is kinda hard..
but if you play the regular game and go through the regular overworld it's easy. just collect all the powerups in that the overworld and goto the shooter sequence last and it will be easy because u are powered up.

This game is definately one of my all-time favorites. For years I hoped it would be resurrected by a later game system as a sequel or remake.
Yeeslander 5 years ago
It is certainly among the hardest bosses I fought. Especially when he goes red. Samus Aran is the best female in NES,but this picture of Miria at the end must be the best female shot on the console. =)
PlayFighterMan 5 years ago
Actually this boss is extremely easy. You stick between his hands, and fire the red Fireball weapon at him nonstop. Takes less than a minute.
Fantastic game, though. I wish there were a lot more like it.... but theres none.

You mean that fireball that cuts through anything?

I beat thia game too, but the way they set up "IT" (The final Boss), it seems like they really DON'T want you to win.

WOW I would expected to see an ending sequence rather then directly to the ending credits. Still though one great game. Classic games RULEZ as usual and always will.
yourtubeyourass21 5 years ago
Actually there's an ending sequence that is just before the final boss, with the planet Naju exploding. If you turn the lights off while watching, just hope you don't get a seizure from it... hehehe.
