Thanks for all the advice. I have become kind of a pro at this now. I found myself not being able to stop sharpening my knives now. They are all sharper than razors. Its so addictive.
@Ragingbeast345 Seriously. When I start sharpening, with every stroke my body learns the movement and repeats on its own. So every stroke is just about the same. Same speed, angle, pressure, etc. I just have to count the stroke for each side. Once I finally give in,... the knife is sharper than a razor. It's amazing. I have a knife coming in the mail today. Cant wait to get it.
Undoubtedly a lot of techniques around, but what about whetting that stone!? Especially is saliva useful, a lot of really old farmers told me. Essencially for not messing up the tempering of the steel.
Cor, these are really great tutorials. Ive been cooking 20 years and never bothered until now to try to understand what makes my knives sharp. Now ive seen this, ive ordered 3 japanese wet stones - 800, 1200 and 4000 grit.
Thanks for taking the time to make these videos, there really helpful
In your other video's, it looked like you tried to cut a thin piece of the stone. Here it seems that you only run the stone along the blade without you pulling it towards you. Does that matter?
i recently started using this technique to sharpen my machete, but its still not sharp enough to cut a water bottle and i really want it to be sharp enough to do that. does any1 hav recomendations for this technique for a good edge?
srry dude but never put the wet stone at the tip and pull to the handle i start from the handle and go to the tip its perfect for slashing by the movement complementing the edge grooves and teeth angle
For sharpening blades over 7", or for repairing damaged blades, nothing beats a power system, like the paper wheels on a grinder or a belt sander. Few things are as entertaining as watching peoples expression when they are shown a machete that will shave hair from your arm without touching the skin. Of coarse this is also very dangerous, so its mostly for showing off. Still for light grasses and vines, it doesnt get much better for cutting.
Yea, fine and dandy sweet as candy! But theres no mention as to how to keep ones sharpening stone from fouling up and/or excessive wear from lack of lubrication; wether it be with water or oil. Thanks for the demo, just the same.
i like to act like rena ryuuguu(from higurashi)at some times cuz i thnk her cleaver or hatchet looks awsome to use so i use me own cleaver and start swining.btw im a guy
This technique makes a lot more sense with 'pocket' stones/hones, but it can still be very effective... if you have a steady hand hand and some focus there are a lot of different ways you can sharpen effectively.
Doesnt the fellow look like a profesional? I have a Martidale machete that I have been trying to sharpen unsuccessfully. Im trying this technique, without safety gloves.

post it to someone that sharpens blades. if they are pro they will make an excellent job of it.....no chopping limbs though
PassThaRizla 2 years ago
use a lower angle your probably just leaving the edge too wide or use a finer stone for a more polished edge

can this technique be used for tomahawks? or does anyone know the proper technique for tomahawks?
vstrap999 2 years ago
Regular style on a stone. It would be much harder to do it this way on a tomohawk. Sharpen it the way you would a knives.
