If the goal of a classical music listener is to hear "catchy tunes"... well... he'd rather listen to pop-music.
Classical music is not slave of fashion or aesthetical dogmas, but it renews itself throughut the centuries. Pretending round melodies à la Shumann in XX century classical music is quite absurd. Any book about the last 100 years of classical music will demonstrate it (Schonberg, Berg, Webern, Hindemith, Boulez, Stockhausen, Xenakis, Berio...). And Sorabji is not even dodecaphonic!
This has no melody to it and is not a catchy tune at all. Thats the genious behind it; trying to figure out what the artist was thinking. What was going through his/her mind. It's very A tonal but expressive and just because one does not like it does not mean that it is not music. It is very much music.
Where did you find the sheets? This seems significantly less difficult than the finale, as well as more musical. Though at the moment I think that one of the most difficult pieces is the Transcendental Etudes (no 4 Mazeppa) Listz.
I think anyone without any skill in music can compose something like this. Anyway, my compliments because you can give a sense to this "music". Great job man, but the next time, if you want to try something difficult, play Brahms or Rachmaninov.
@H01001000 I don't understand it, it's not music for me. Sounds like computer generating random notes. Please explain to me why you think this is music.
First - Great job on the movement. It is not perfect, but it looks like you have good technique; keep working on it and in a year or two it will be perfectly acceptable for a recital.
Second - Frankly, this is not the hardest piano piece. Maybe you should take that part out of the video description.
Third - Please do not listen to this piece at all if you have little musical experience or if you prefer very safe boundaries in music. You will have to learn this language first.
@yygghhh listen to Rachmaninoff piano concertos or Islamey (Balakirev) or Brahms' second piano concerto or something that Liszt composed and realize that what you said is not true, please

well you're not the first person in the world to do it; but this is a pretty good rendering for someone your age; don't listen to the morons leaving ignorant comments. they don't even know who Sorabji is, and are not aware that this is just one selection among Sorabji's copious amount of piano music. Don't you just love this mvt. though? It's so uncompromising. so elemental and cosmic, it's like a mystical herald. So full of violence just as the universe is so violent.,volatile and unforgiving
@MaskedAssailant08@nolli546tpes yeah right dipshit; maybe you should actually look up Sorabji and listen to professional recordings of his music, before you insult one of the most brilliant and innovative composers of all time. In the middle ages 3rds were considered dissonant, but for 500 years there has not been a single musical piece without them; you're an ignorant musical neanderthal. Art evolves what was once dissonant is now consonant....hmmmm think it about it fluffer.
@TastyZwieback in the middle ages 3rds were considered dissonant. But, in 500 years there hasn't been a single musical piece written without them. What was once dissonant becomes consonant. open up your mind. Kaikhosru Sorabji (1892-1988):genius.
@Neongrapes it's garbarge. Unless you think garbage is a sign of genius, then this isn't genius...at least in most persons' minds. Maybe in some screwed up persons world...
@Neongrapes Sorabji: bullshitter --not genius....LOL :-) just look and see what his real name was and you will understand why he was a bullshitter...
@TastyZwieback yeah you're not a genius if you change your name. you obviously don't know anything about music, and especially 20th century music. And by using "LOL" you're obviously a dime a dozen generation Y, pussy.

@Neongrapes Woah dude calm down. Trying to act big over a keyboard doesn't really say much about yourself. I mean be honest he COULD have made the whole thing up and I doubt Sorabji would have noticed LOL! I feel like he wrote this just to make extremely complicated music. I am actually quite musically inclined just to let you know. Fluffer :]
@nolli546tpes you're missing the point. you couldn't have just made it up, because it's extremely harmonically intricate. It's not random. I have a masters in composition from New Eng. Conserv. so I know what I'm talking about. Just go back to listening to your archaic, derivative, tonal music that your so inclined to. Look, it only sounds random because A: this kid can't play the piece, and B: it's way over your head.
@Neongrapes I guess it is over my head. I listened to a lot of the Opus Clavicembalisticum recordings on youtube and I cannot find any enjoyment out of any of them. Its either A: wayy to advanced for my musical taste or B: really is just random bullshit for people to buy into. Either way I don't care I'm over it and I will go back to listening to my archaic, derivative, tonal music with key signatures and sense.
@ZackyMW if you knew anything about harmony you would realize it's not random. you're an ignoramus. You're obviously not familiar with post-tonal music so just keep your fluffy pansie opinions concealed in your pea sized brain. also the kid played it bad; this is not a professional rendering

Go back to your Warcraft and flame at the newbies on your level 80 paladin. Go on. No one's stopping you. And what more of a reason to return to your fantasy world as to see your level 80 night elf girlfriend unequip her armour.
But in all seriousness, you need to keep your mouth shut if you think your going to make anyone change their opinions by talking down on everyone. We simply tease the fact that he chose a unique piece to play.
Definitely not for the faint-hearted. Personally, I would rather spend my time and effort learning other piano works that sound nicer. Difficult and impressive no doubt but ugly to listen to.
The guy that composed this music is like the people that pass abstract art as real art. Not all abstract art is bad but most of it is bullshit. It's an excuse for someone with no talent in art to become an artist. He mashed a much of chords together and called it a piano piece when in reality it's a piece of shit. But kudos to the guy playing. It is hard stuff to play. Despite being crap.
@shogun996 Maybe he just likes atonal music, as abstract artists like abstract art. You are looking at life in a very narrow minded way. Other people have opinions on things you know.
@Guitareben Don't start preaching to me dude. I look at life for exactly what it is. I don't try and complicate things that don't need it. I look at things in life for exactly what they are. When I hear a good piano piece I try and imagine what the composer was thinking or feeling. When I see paintings I try and imagine what the artist was feeling. When i see MOST abstract art i see bullshit. When i hear this piece..i hear bullshit, because that's what it is.
@shogun996 But if someone likes it, how is it bullshit? Just because YOU cannot understand it does not mean it is shit. Just because YOU Don't like it doesn't mean it is shit. Someone out there obviously likes it, so that makes it good. All music is good :).
@Guitareben Dude go ahead a fool YOURself into believing this is art. I think people that defend pieces like this try to justify their existence by advocating bullshit piano pieces like this. There are people out there that like Tila Tequila's wannabe rap junk. Just because one person likes it doesn't make it good. I don't even think you could call crap like that good music just because one person likes it. And one could argue it's not even music. It's crap. No substance. Like this piece
@shogun996 You see, you fail to understand that it is all just a matter of opinion. Your small self centred view of the world fails to grasp how other people, as surprising as it may seem, do actually have opinions. You see, it might be crap IN YOUR OPINION, but it cannot just be "crap". Other people like his stuff, though it appears you have trouble understanding how people differ.
You need to be able to look at life from other peoples perspectives too :) .
@Guitareben You're so stupid that you don't even realize that you are contradicting what you are saying. You say everything is a matter of opinion and blah blah blah. So I voiced MY opinion. Then a douche bag like you comes along and starts preaching to me that I have a narrow minded view. But if you actually practiced what you preached you wouldn't be telling me that i have a narrow mind. If everything is a matter of opinion then take mine for what it is and stop preaching and stop whining.
Looking back over my comments and thinking a bit, I agree with you. I am tripping over my own beliefs.
However, "Dude go ahead a fool YOURself into believing this is art" "When i hear this piece..i hear bullshit, because that's what it is" and "And one could argue it's not even music. It's crap. No substance. Like this piece"
Well, look at yourself too.
I fully understand your point though haha, damn I need to follow my own beliefs before preaching to people. Thankyou :)
@Guitareben Maybe you should open your mind to other peoples opinions then. Everything I say is an opinion in the form of a statement. You don't even know what you're talking about. If what I'm saying bothers you and you believe "That everything is a matter of opinion." Then ignore my comment and move on. Don't preach to me. It's almost like YOU don't like my opinion but then you say "everything is a matter of opinion." You don't make sense. You're tripping over your own beliefs.
Lol just sounds like a kid banging on the piano... this piece has no real structure or contrast/ variety let alone any variety... ive seen people playing like this.... kids before they even start learning piano bang on it like that
@rpg1201 actually I don't think Moonlight Sonata No. 14 Movement 3 isn't that hard, it's just fast. If you have experience and learn it, other pieces would be much harder because of the patterns.
thats a bunch of bullshit if you are actually 13. why dont you do us all a favor and post one of your recordings of Dohnanyu's sixth concrt etude. or even of the chopin etude. If you do then i am sorry, but i truthfully doubt you can play those as a self taught 13 year old.
@ZdravkoBG. Theres a lot of hard pieces out there. No offense but this piece in the vid, is just the first movement of the hardest piece ever "PERFORMED".
I never said this wasnt hard...but w/e. i personally would never play this piece. It has no melody its just a bunch of "carefully arranged" notes. and i know there are a lot of hard pieces out there, i never said rach mm4 was the HARDEST or anything...also, why did you put PERFORMED in caps and quotes? just curious
please stop commenting me. we already discussed this already ask the person who plays this piece were friends and were joking around....if ur not 100% sure on wat ppl are talking about dont bother to butt in. thanks (:
Don't be arrogant. I'm a pianist too and don't understand this entire genre! All the pieces you mentioned are really not bad for your age, but THIS piece is insane.
It's hailed as one of the most difficult pieces ever written. Don't make yourself look bad.
@sophiho he even admitted to me i was right. and even if he was better than me hes been playing for 8yrs. private tutoring. ive been self taught and only been playing for 1 1/2 yrs. just mind ur own buisness please.
Actually for the bashers... this IS considered to be the most difficult piece IN EXISTENCE by most pianists. Only TWO players have managed to record the entire piece in history. So BRAVO!!!!
omg...wats ur problem....just get all defensive i was just saying im not a retard i knew that already and why should u care about my opinion mind ur own damn life
@TheFrenziedPianist idrc yes i can play the piano ina much higher level than u i know thatlook up chopin etude 10 no 12 yes that is the level i am in or tocatta and fugue in D minor. and tchaikovsky seasons: seasons:harvest auguest. those r my levels
@day2Dawn. Umm actually that is not my level. that is below it. I've played those pieces before. Try Cziffra's Tristch-Tratch Polka or Alkan's Le Chemin de Fer.
@TheFrenziedPianist wow for one i can play higher than that...2 thats the most gayest song ive ever seen 3 im a 12c level and im only 13 try this Dohnanyi's Sixth Concert Etude
lol i learned those pieces before turning 13, as did many others at my conservatoires (Julliard (growing up), thrn RAM)... try again with new pieces for true bragging rights. this is widely considered to be the single most difficult piece ever written. only two pianists in history have ever been able to perform and record clavicembalisticum it in its entirety EVER.
@losinggrip1993 okay 1 shut the fuck up...idc about stupid language on the internet i actually have a life. 2 were friends. 3 were joking around. god and we were never even talking to you i hate it wen people just but in on others conversations. ur so annoying u can even ask him.
2. I have a life - thank you very much. I don't undertsand how me butting into your conversation means 'I have no life'. When you don't know me as a person.
3. Didn't your parents teacher you any manners? There's no need to use profanities like that.
You're a great player with good technique. This piece is horrible though. I'm a big lover of Classical music but this particular piece makes my ears bleed - Sorabji just wanted to make the longest and most complicated Piano piece - he succeded. Shame it's such a horrific piece. You should try some Chopin or Liszt etudes... there extremely technical but they sound wonderful. You're a good player - just don't do this piece - it's the biggest piece of a Musical joke I've ever seen in my life.
@4hm3dimr4n Sorabji is the greatest piano composer of the 20th century post Debussy and Scriabin. You should listen to his music performed by professionals before you condemn it. You should check out the Transcendental Studies played by Fredrik Ullen, or Gulistan recorded by Charles Hopkins. Or Le Jardin Parfume played by Yonty Solomon. these works have undeniable beauty. But if you haven't listened to Debussy's preludes and etudes or late Scriabin your ears are not ready yet.
Could this video (and the Madge videos found on this channel) please get deleted? Such degrees of textural inaccuracy merely damage Sorabji's reputation.

@Guitareben Well, that's acceptable if you like it. I'm just talking about the people who ramble on about how amazingly genius this piece is...if anyone finds some kind of strange attraction to this piece, then, hey, glad you like it. :)

well you're not the first person in the world to do it; but this is a pretty good rendering for someone your age; don't listen to the morons leaving ignorant comments. they don't even know who Sorabji is, and are not aware that this is just one selection among Sorabji's copious amount of piano music. Don't you just love this mvt. though? It's so uncompromising. so elemental and cosmic, it's like a mystical herald. So full of violence just as the universe is so violent.,volatile and unforgiving

@MaskedAssailant08 @nolli546tpes yeah right dipshit; maybe you should actually look up Sorabji and listen to professional recordings of his music, before you insult one of the most brilliant and innovative composers of all time.

Fluffer :]
nolli546tpes 1 year ago
@nolli546tpes you're missing the point. you couldn't have just made it up, because it's extremely harmonically intricate. It's not random. I have a masters in composition from New Eng. Conserv. so I know what I'm talking about. Just go back to listening to your archaic, derivative, tonal music that your so inclined to. Look, it only sounds random because A: this kid can't play the piece, and B: it's way over your head.
Neongrapes 1 year ago
@Neongrapes I guess it is over my head. I listened to a lot of the Opus Clavicembalisticum recordings on youtube and I cannot find any enjoyment out of any of them. Its either A: wayy to advanced for my musical taste or B: really is just random bullshit for people to buy into. Either way I don't care I'm over it and I will go back to listening to my archaic, derivative, tonal music with key signatures and sense.

Despite being crap.
shogun996 1 year ago 8
@shogun996 Maybe he just likes atonal music, as abstract artists like abstract art. You are looking at life in a very narrow minded way. Other people have opinions on things you know.
Guitareben 1 year ago
@Guitareben Don't start preaching to me dude. I look at life for exactly what it is. I don't try and complicate things that don't need it. I look at things in life for exactly what they are. When I hear a good piano piece I try and imagine what the composer was thinking or feeling. When I see paintings I try and imagine what the artist was feeling. When i see MOST abstract art i see bullshit. When i hear this piece..i hear bullshit, because that's what it is.
shogun996 1 year ago

Like this piece
shogun996 1 year ago
@shogun996 You see, you fail to understand that it is all just a matter of opinion. Your small self centred view of the world fails to grasp how other people, as surprising as it may seem, do actually have opinions. You see, it might be crap IN YOUR OPINION, but it cannot just be "crap". Other people like his stuff, though it appears you have trouble understanding how people differ.
You need to be able to look at life from other peoples perspectives too :) .
Cheers, and have fun :)
Guitareben 1 year ago
@Guitareben You're so stupid that you don't even realize that you are contradicting what you are saying. You say everything is a matter of opinion and blah blah blah. So I voiced MY opinion. Then a douche bag like you comes along and starts preaching to me that I have a narrow minded view. But if you actually practiced what you preached you wouldn't be telling me that i have a narrow mind. If everything is a matter of opinion then take mine for what it is and stop preaching and stop whining.
shogun996 1 year ago
@shogun996 Example of narrow mindedness : "When i hear this piece..i hear bullshit, because that's what it is."
This is not an opinion, it is a statement based off an opinion. I am fine you think it is shit, but your statement there is not an opinion.
"I think people that defend pieces like this try to justify their existence by advocating bullshit piano pieces like this."
Here, it appears to me, that you are implying that this piece shouldn't exist, because you don't like it. Narrow minded?

Looking back over my comments and thinking a bit, I agree with you. I am tripping over my own beliefs.
However, "Dude go ahead a fool YOURself into believing this is art" "When i hear this piece..i hear bullshit, because that's what it is" and "And one could argue it's not even music. It's crap. No substance. Like this piece"
Well, look at yourself too.
I fully understand your point though haha, damn I need to follow my own beliefs before preaching to people. Thankyou :)
Guitareben 1 year ago
@Guitareben Maybe you should open your mind to other peoples opinions then. Everything I say is an opinion in the form of a statement. You don't even know what you're talking about. If what I'm saying bothers you and you believe "That everything is a matter of opinion." Then ignore my comment and move on. Don't preach to me. It's almost like YOU don't like my opinion but then you say "everything is a matter of opinion." You don't make sense. You're tripping over your own beliefs.

You're a good player - just don't do this piece - it's the biggest piece of a Musical joke I've ever seen in my life.
losinggrip1993 2 years ago
the only reason this song is so hard to play is because no one in their right mind would want to play it
no offense to the guy playing it
i do want to ask you something...why did you decide to learn this piece?
i mean i see the depths of hell when i hear this
what do you feel when you play this?
4hm3dimr4n 2 years ago 10
@4hm3dimr4n Sorabji is the greatest piano composer of the 20th century post Debussy and Scriabin. You should listen to his music performed by professionals before you condemn it. You should check out the Transcendental Studies played by Fredrik Ullen, or Gulistan recorded by Charles Hopkins. Or Le Jardin Parfume played by Yonty Solomon. these works have undeniable beauty. But if you haven't listened to Debussy's preludes and etudes or late Scriabin your ears are not ready yet.
