a college education has never been particularly affordable, and I dont think our money policy is to blame. the fact of the matter is that it costs money to educate people, and in most developed countries. the govt pays for it. here in the great united states, we think the rest of the developed world are a bunch of socialists, and if you dont go into debt to pay for your education, youre not american.

I'm 47, I live basically around the block from my first apartment, which is the same size of the noe I currently live in. 1982, $350 a month for 2 bd 2 bth, with full amenities. Now, $1600 same size. Back then I was going to school, working and paying my own way on a $11 an hour moving job. Movers make about the same amount of money per hour. But housing costs have risen enormously.
My family history is one of higher education, without loans or grants, and without your parents help. For Heaven's sake, by time you go to college, you're over 18, who said anything was promised to you? What makes you think you are more entitled to an education than anyone else? Learning takes work, and if you pay for it yourself without a handout, you learn more & appreciate it more.
Be a big boy, and take care of yourself, and raise your children so that they will be self sufficient and my hard earned tax dollars won't be supporting their education, since you're the one who had them...
If someone is so irresponsible to have children, without taking their child's future seriously, by preparing that child to be self sufficient, why should I, or anyone else, pay for it?

Exactly! You can go to a good school and not be an elitist! I went to a private high school and a tier 1 college, and it wasn't from money or elitism. Its because I STUDIED! Well, to be honest, elitism (at least in the sense that Obama's critics are using the word) is not determined by one's background or by one's financial situation. It is about attitudes towards others. I just wanted to make that point.
But that said, Obama is NOT an elitist. I think that he, more than any other candidate running, makes an effort to understand and empathize with different perspectives.

Also, you may want to thank the same people for putting young people in debt because they choose to get a higher education. You may want to look more closely at Ford, Rockefeller, Mellon, & Carnigie Foundations to see where they give money. It shouldn't surprise you they give HUGE amounts of money to control most, if not all, of the top Universities here in USA. If you think those huge donations are without strings, think again.

I'm 47, I live basically around the block from my first apartment, which is the same size of the noe I currently live in. 1982, $350 a month for 2 bd 2 bth, with full amenities. Now, $1600 same size. Back then I was going to school, working and paying my own way on a $11 an hour moving job. Movers make about the same amount of money per hour. But housing costs have risen enormously.

For Heaven's sake, by time you go to college, you're over 18, who said anything was promised to you? What makes you think you are more entitled to an education than anyone else?
