Heres my attempt at a solution. Anyone can go on welfare BUT, unless they are disabled, they have to show up at an office at 8 am every morning to get their job for the day. They work for 8 hrs a day, and recieve their welfare. They could do anything, from painting a fence, to sweeping the streets. This would sure clean things up, make taxpayers like me happier, and should be some incentive to get a job, where the wages might be a bit higher than welfare. Probably lower crime too.

Like I said, if everyone was working, that is capable of it, regardless of what they are doing, I believe the future would brighten up. This could be treated as a work entry training position. At least that's what I've heard when I've lived in Finland, Sweden and when I was a student in Germany. Now those are in China...

There would have to be stringent quidelines. You and I couldn't make a deal, and profit from their labor. Records would be sent in weekly, insuring that what was being done fit the criteria, and that everyone that should be in the program, participated.

For instance, here in Finland, you have to work without salary ofr at least 6 months before you can get a welfare check from a goverment-run welfare company. Not disagreeing necessarily, but less than 1% of your taxes go to public assistance programs.. so I wouldn't get so worked up about you paying for them.
Welfare is essential for any modern industrial society, look at the EU for example and in particular Sweden. The statistics overwhelmingly paint a stark picture for laissez faire societies, it isn't as simple as Carolla would like to think.
Why can't we just have welfare that isn't linked to the number of children a family has, and have incentives for carrying fewer children instead?

The taxpayers do not have a right to treat those on assistance, many of whom have JOBS, as slaves with no rights to anything. The system can be changed so that moms would not get bigger and bigger benefits as they have more kids. That would be a start to not rewarding those who keep getting pregnant.

Section * housing, free everything through Head Start ie dental, day care while they work or anything else. You say bad homes, what do you mean? Heres my attempt at a solution. Anyone can go on welfare BUT, unless they are disabled, they have to show up at an office at 8 am every morning to get their job for the day. They work for 8 hrs a day, and recieve their welfare. They could do anything, from painting a fence, to sweeping the streets. This would sure clean things up, make taxpayers like me happier, and should be some incentive to get a job, where the wages might be a bit higher than welfare. Probably lower crime too.

Welfare should be reserved for those who elderly or disabled. Pregnant women should not get welfare unless they are divorced and are a displaced homemakers. The Scandinavian countries have very strong economies with low unemployment, low crime rates and an extremely high quality a life...Norway, Sweden and Finland are very nice places to life...Not all left leaning social democracies are failures like Greece, Spain etc...Northern Europe/ Scandinavia is doing very well with that model.

@yobro250 Here is a thought, the total population of Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands combined is approximately 25,251,000 vs the 307,006,550 of the United States.
The population of California? approximately 36,961,664, that 11 million MORE people that live in California alone that all of Scandinavian countries.
They have no where near the number of freeloaders we do, thus less crime, unemployment and so forth . Europe can keep it's soft socialism!

@2433006guy That doesn't work, Germany tried it but it failed because paid employees said they lose their jobs because those goverment-paid unemployed people are taking their jobs. Same thing in Finland, Sweden and Denmark.

The "job" of the people running the program (paid position) in each community would arrange the work. Maybe paint Mrs. Smiths house (pensioner) or rebuilt an elderly couples deck, or clean up a park, anything. Sweep city sidewalks, clean up graffitti, pick up the trash that accumulates and is never picked up. Paint government assisted housing -

@2433006guy -projects that are allowed to be run down, and is usually refurbished on the tax payers dollar. Yes, this would be a make work project, but not to do things that regular employees are being paid to do. All the extras. Things that would improve a communities appearance, but there just isn't the funding to do. Look after and assist our elderly, something I feel is lacking in most areas. Just a work for welfare program. What work really doesn't matter. Return pride.

At least that's what I've heard when I've lived in Finland, Sweden and when I was a student in Germany. And one of the biggest reasons for higher unemployment rates is the fact that there are no factories anymore. Our fathers and grandfathers all worked in factories when they were young. Now those are in China...

@pacemaker2point0 For instance, pacemaker2point0, if you were hired to run the program, it would be your responsibility to see to it that each individual had a job each of the days they are recieving welfare, Monday to Friday. There would have to be stringent quidelines. You and I couldn't make a deal, and profit from their labor. Records would be sent in weekly, insuring that what was being done fit the criteria, and that everyone that should be in the program, participated.

@2433006guy I don't feel this should be used as a tool to attempt to shame lazy people back to work, but a real job may be preferable. By saying that, I feel that SOME draw welfare because they're doing all they can to not let a job interfere with their free life style. For those that are disabled, or for a credible reason draw welfare, nothing would change. A person once told me welfare paid poorly, but the hours were great! Man, I AM long winded! Something I truely believe in.

I would love to have our elderly cared for properly, sidewalks swept, graffitti cleaned up, etc. Here, that isn't a thing that is the responsibility of city employees. It really wouldn't cost the tax payers anything extra, as those doing the work would only recieve their regular welfare cheque. If they didn't show up for work they would require a doctors note, or forfit that days wages. I believe the incentive to get a regular job would be huge. Why, just the other day a bunch of us on welfare were having a drink and discussing this. Lol-tongue in cheek.

For instance, here in Finland, you have to work without salary ofr at least 6 months before you can get a welfare check from a goverment-run welfare company. But the problem is - all the jobs already taken. There aren't any little tasks that unemployed people could do.

I just know that sometimes I feel like I live in an upside down world, when the sometimes the people that are receiving the help live WAY better than the ones contributing to the help. I know it's crazy but it's true that has been my experience. Better cars better clothes better homes, yes I feel like I'm in the Twilight Zone. Some one explain to me how that can happen

But when I am at the register and the person in front of me pays with EBT and her hair is all nice her nails are done her clothes is very nice (way better than mines) and drives home in a nice big car, that PISSES me off. That person clearly abusing the system and no one does anything about it., and I see this nearly EVERY time that I go to the store.

Welfare is essential for any modern industrial society, look at the EU for example and in particular Sweden. The statistics overwhelmingly paint a stark picture for laissez faire societies, it isn't as simple as Carolla would like to think.
Why can't we just have welfare that isn't linked to the number of children a family has, and have incentives for carrying fewer children instead?

I think the USA's incarceration rates are caused by the failed "War on Drugs",not to mention our military presence all over the world, and many of our social problems and poverty would dry up if it were ended. Nonsense. An employee is not totally bought and paid for by an employer. Your employer is paying for your time and abilities under specific rules. The taxpayers do not have a right to treat those on assistance, many of whom have JOBS, as slaves with no rights to anything. The system can be changed so that moms would not get bigger and bigger benefits as they have more kids. That would be a start to not rewarding those who keep getting pregnant.

A very small amount of your tax dollars are being spent on assistance programs and many recipients do have jobs. Far more debt was created by an unnecessary war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Again, people find it easier to be led by sheep like Adam Carolla to blame the wrong people for our economic problems.
