Gene Autry is the best country singer I know (after that is Taylor Swift and Johnny Cash) they are all amazing, and guess how old I am? 13. yup
most my friends listen to all this modern rubbish like lady gaga and rihanna and nicki minaj. which is understandable since they're singers of they're generation. If I could go to any generation, It'd be his, then I could see him and Cash, id be the happiest thirteen year old in the world!
This stuff is wonderful and I love Gene Autry. We must not forget however, that around a similar time, blacks were being lynched in the deep south and popular black musicians were not even allowed to stay in the Hotels they were performing at. I am not saying that this applied to Gene Autry, because he wasn't black, but it does indicate that not all of the USA was, and still isn’t, the wonderful place that his romantic, home spun, starry eyed, patriotic, all American songs depicted.
@Nojnotpu - Well said. Not all beer and skittles back then, was it? Sad that, but in the main it seems people were more law-abiding and generally more interested in others than they are now. Racial bigotry is vile, so unjust and so baseless - all men are created equal as the American constitution says - they might say it, but often don't practise it. All that has nothing to do with Gene's singing, he's alwys been good, but I couldn't pass up the opportunity to reply to your comment.
Fantastic. Gene had a really lovely singing voice. He, and Roy Rogers, epitomised those wonderful, good old Mid West American values. Nothing like the soul searching, or patriotic but equally fantastic stuff that had come or was coming from Woody Guthrie and Hank Williams. Although I love to listen to some of Genes stuff I actually prefer Woody and Hank.
When I grew up in Oklahoma, you were a Gene Autry fan or a Roy Rogers fan. No in between. I was always a Gene Autry fan, and I yet remember a time he came to my hometown, Seminole, and was in a parade! I must add, as the years wore on I got to liking Roy Rogers, too. He was more genuine than I at first thought. They died within a few months of each other. I actually remember waking up on a bus stop in Chelsea, OK, I think it was, where Gene worked as a telegraph operator. Fun!
