You never use the bridge pickup, do you? I always see you playing with the switch in the middle or on the neck. I agree with you on the thin sounding stock Dynas. I got my Dynas rewound by Lindy Fralin and now they're fat as can be. I like Seymour, but decided to go the economy route and have the stock ones improved. BTW, Lindy said he won't rewind those anymore. He says it takes too damn long to do!
@bbender1975 What I'm starting to notice is that by using the volume controls, you can really blend/fine-tune the sound using only the middle position. I find the individual positions too extreme, esp the bridge.
As for the Seymours, yeah, they are v.pricey so I'm not sure I could really recommend them to anyone. On the other hand, I wouldn't recommend the guitar unless you do the kind of mods that you and I have done.
Up unti some time around 2006, the Electromatic 512x-series came stock with DeArmond 2000 pickups. They pickups look like the original Dynasonics, and sort of sound like them too. Current Gretsch production 512x Electromatics are equipped with the Gretschbuckers. These are basically a Gibson-style dual coil unit with slots for the threaded pole screws.
@HardcoreSixty No electromatic models come with dynasonics. The 5125-9 line has dearmond 2000's which look like dynasonics (but aren't), but none of those models come in orange.
So the pickups, the gold hardware, bound f-holes, and block hump fret markers all point to this guitar being what Johnny says it is.
I like your guitar collection very much, great style of playing you got there...you got a cool little descending pattern on a few things that really puts a cross some attitude in the phrasing...those headstrong amps sound freking A killer...I don't usually use that word "killer' , but at the risk of duding out, that is what they are , Jerry Lee stomping, rompin killer sounding tube cruisers....thanks for the demos, now I subscribe..
@bubbathepurple 5120 is the Korean-made version of the pro-series 6120, (an example of which is played in this video). They ONLY come with "Gretschbucker" pickups, which are pretty much agreed upon by all as being sub-standard. Dynasonics are fantastic, but not available on a 5120. Filtertrons are Gretsch's humbucker, with a sweeter & melodic sound than Gibs HBs. TVJones manufactures pickups in the Gretsch style, some prefer them, I don't.
@636117 Hey thanks for the reply! I have seen on a video somewhere a 5120 with dynasonics...which do you like personally between the filtertrons and the dynasonics?
@bubbathepurple Each have their own use, but I prefer the Dynas by a mile. Mr. TVJones now makes a copy of the Dynas, but again, they don't do proper Dynas justice. The stock Gretsch Dynasonics (available from BLACKRIDER GUITARS) sound 100x better than TVJ version. Original Dynas from the '50s are highly sought after, and SEYMOUR DUNCAN makes the best version of a '50s Dyna. I use standard Gretsch Dynas, and am pleased with them. Check out the vid of my Duojet and listen to their sound.
@scumcity14 yeah I have an early 5129 (black w/ red top), and I'm quite satisfied with the DeArmond 2000s, despite the slight noise one would expect from a (more affordable) single-coil p/up....
And speaking of TV Jones p/ups -- just how good is the 'TVJ Classic' ?? And do you get same sound out of a 6120SHTV Setzer 'Hot Rod' as a Chet Atkins 6120-1959LTV..? Same TVJ Classic p/ups .... I can imagine the wiring to be significantly different.... -- anyone?
@alaincherif oooops!! By 'wiring', I was referring to the circuitry of either guitar. Don't know much about this (except perhaps that noise/hum is a problem assoc. w/ single-coils!!), so any Gretsch players out there pls feel free to share yer experience.
What an awesome guitar! I love those Dynasonics, such an incredible tone. Your playing skills definitely do that guitar justice, especially your picking.
@erocker2020 there are more brilliant artists using Ibanez than using Gretsch!
Just name a a few: Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Andy timmons, and this guys also know how to play blues, and Ibanez although has some cheap models, most guitars are freat instruments, Gretsch dosent have cheaper models cz its owned by fender !
You, sir, are an imbecile. He didn't compare them, he observed the similarity in body style and color scheme.
Not all Ibanez are cheap; some are quite nice high-end guitars. Similarly, Gretsch has their share of cheap imported low-end guitars along with their high dollar pro line.
sorry but i have a gretsch 5120 electromatic upgraded with one dynasonic on bridge and one p 90 on neck like Eddie Cochran and it didn't sound like your japanese sushi
I don't recall anybody here claiming that an Ibanez sounded like your "upgraded" Chinese ramen. There is more to the equation than pickups alone, and your 5120 still ain't a 6120.
High-end Gretsch are absolutely killer...5120s are damn nice, too, that's why I also own one. It sits in the same rack as my cheap Ibanez acoustic, my Jem and my 1st generation RG550.
They're different animals altogether, but yep, Ibanez has made single-cut hollows in transparent orange.
i always thought these were better siuted to rockabilly, and 50s style rock n roll, and blues/jump-blues.

@636117 I agree. The Duncans sound identical to the real Dynasonic on my Clipper although the guitars themselves are quite different.

@636117 If you can find a 5125 they have US made DeArmonds on them...great pick-ups, not 100% like the original Dynasonics but pretty damn good

As said, Gretsch guitars are awesome. Even the 5120 if you would consider it a "low end" guitar from Gretsch plays nice. I love Gretsch guitars.

no you didn't say that but you can't compare your ibanez with a Gretsch. The Gretsch is a Rolls Royce the Ibanez a cheap one guitar
eugenecraddock 2 years ago 3
What i was doing, was not comparing , or am i retarded ?
do you even know what an Ibanez Artcore is ? And was, cus now they're cheap , i totally agree, but they didn't used to be.
