  • Ever thought of buying a Scottoiler?

  • n'importe quoi le roosbeef, tu la demontes, tu la fait tremper une nuit dans du pétrole lampantn souflette, essuyage, graissage et elle sera nickel !!!!

  • I mentioned that WD-40 should never be used as a chain lubricant Here’s an explanation.

WD40 was developed by the military in the 50s as a rust preventative solvent and de-greaser to protect missile parts. It also works on small items like hinges, and locks.

Bike chains, on the other hand, are far too heavy and fast-moving for the lubricating power of WD40 to work. In fact, WD-40 will actually strip away any existing lubricant and leave your drivetrain dry – metal on metal eating ur o-ring.

  • Helpful, concise video. Cheers!

  • I bought a special chain cleaner that cost near $10 !!!, even since i've been using WD-40 as it does the same job, can use more, cheaper, and provides some lubrication when i take it out to warm up the chain be4 i put real chain lube. As far as lubing, i let it run in 1st gear and just spray a little on the inside of the chain, mid-way. Stop and wipe excess, fingers intact, fast job, no mess

  • Are you sure Kerosene is safe to use on o-ring chain? Can I use WD40 to clean as well? What's a good chain wax brand that won't fling?

  • @ELEchad There is much more information out there on the web on this subject. Most people say WD40 is not safe. I've never used WD40. The way I did it seems to be fine, I have had no problems.

  • @viewdo600rr WD-40 eats the little circle inside the o-ring setup... WD-40 is not what you should use I don't care who tells you otherwise it's a proven FACT it will deplete the life of your chain.. I use synthetic motor oil a rag and a toothbrush and my chain looks day 1 clean...

  • @ELEchad My motorcycle manual says to use kerosene. I also use it to wash my truck and motorcycle every now and then. Very safe, and just use any white lithium grease spray. It bonds to the metal and doesn't fling.

  • @ELEchad Kerosene is recommended to clean the chain and other lubricated parts in my bike (GS500E) Users Manual (at least in the Brazilian version) and is very cheap. According to the manual, kerosene doesn´t attack the rubber parts, clean very well and is a natural lubricant. But don´t forget to lubricate the chain very well after the clean.

  • @ELEchad my manual says i should use kerosene on my O-ring chain!

  • Are you sure Kerosene is safe to use on o-ring chain? Can I use WD40 to clean as well?

  • @Radman916 what spray do you use?

  • That was gay

  • Honda recommends SAE 80 or 90 gear oil for my 2007 Honda Shadow Spirit VT750DC. Is it really necessary to clean the chain before lubing it?

  • @ussprinceton2004 Yes just use wd40 to clean it then use chain wax (not gear oil) to lube it.. sticks much better and wont spray everywhere like gear oil

  • You forgot to mention it is important to clean off the excess lube from the chain, cause the chain gets dirty quicker if you don't.

  • What if you do not have the resources depicted in this video????

Can't you just use degreaser on the chain brush out all the gunk an when the chain is brand new again apply lube???

  • Thanks so much for making this video. It's a pain in the ass to take it into the shop every time for something I can do myself.

  • You got OCD. That some model you keep in your living room? I don.t think I could do that if I had too>Ride hard put it w=away dirty eh?

  • You got OCD. That some model you keep in your living room? I don.t think I could do that if I had too>

  • I use brake clean, blows all the grim off quick, safe on o rings. Then moly grease applied with brush.

  • Kerosene and a toothbrush, rinse off with a water hose. Short ride to warm up the chain then lube. Done

  • WD-40 works the best for cleaning the chain

  • hi, nice vid. how often and when i have to clean my bike's chain?

  • WRONG ....you should never lube your chain at the sprocket, instead place a cloth behind the chain (resting on your lower suspension set up) and then apply at the mid-chain point aiming away from the tyre. Any lube that gets past your chain is soaked up by the rag, no mess and more importantly no lube touches your tyre. If you get chain lube on your tyre other than being dangerous when riding it could, over time start to degrade the tyre wall.

  • So someone tell me,to use chain wax after cleaning is a good idea right??? And what to use to clean it??? And do I have to be this thorough when I clean my chain???

  • This is really a great video. Beyond the obvious pride of ownership you have for your investment, you've concisely edited your presentation so that slow parts are sped up and only the pertinent information is highlighted in the video. And you provided comprehensive instructions without uttering a single word.

    Commendable. Thank you!

  • Don't be stupid people. Never use WD-40 as a chain lube as WD-40 is not a lube. Don't waste your time with these chain cleaners, they all suck. Go to Home Depot and get your self some Mineral Spirits. It cleans the chain and all your Aluminum parts better then another other cleaner.

Never use chain wax, silicon spray, or any Oil based lubes unless you don't want your chain to last long. Get DuPont teflon chain saver Its the best chain lube, and will make your chain quiter and last much longer.

  • why is it that so many video dont show that you better oil/wax the chain from the inside...

  • Thank you for the video

    good idea with the toothbrush

    Greetz from the Netherlands

  • I'm sure you have it by now since this video is two years old but that three sided chain cleaning brush does a much better job than a toothbrush, I'm sure that someone has already mentioned that to you though,

  • Me parece EXCESIVO, pero bueno cada uno lo hace a su manera........

  • Awesome. Very helpful video.

Oh and this song is super familiar. Who's the Artist?

  • @runtor1988 tycho- pbs. good song.

  • @XximarealboyxX

Hahah, of course! I must've been drawing a blank when I asked that. I have all their stuff. They're amazing.

  • what did u used to hold the motocycle up?

  • @rockandroll1968 I have a motorcycle stand from Pitbull search on google for it, pretty handy to have one.

  • i use that exact same chain wax its supposed to be better because it dries like a wax so it dosent collect dirt i bought renthal lube for my new chain but im almost afraid to use it b/c i think it will collect to much dirt

  • you can use WD40 as chain lube if you apply it every 2 or 3 miles of riding... not very practical!!! I use gumout carburetor cleaner as a cleaning agent... works great

  • i lost a finger thanks alot

  • thank you

  • Good to see someone properly taking the time to maintain their bike. Great video!! I'll be cleaning mine tomorrow before I go on a big ride before the weekend. Cheers

  • wow ... all dat ... i just spray chain-lube on ..... i never clean ... guess i need o start

  • @ZacGot1 Actually I don't think it's a good idea to clean like that too often.

  • @ZacGot1 Yeah, you need to.. all you're doing is keeping all the dust grime there and just adding another layer of lube on top of it. Not the best way to keep your chain clean.

  • Finally someone that knows how to properly clean and lube a chain. Most people that have posted on you tube about clean/lube a chain are idiots....Good video man and nice CBR you got there. Our shop cleans and lubes the same way!!

  • @Greenmarine6 would appreciate a response, how important is it to claen the chain to that extent and how often should it be done- (new rider)

  • @JAM1E94 The person in the video did an excellent job in cleaning the chain.

The only thing different that I do from this guy is I also use a brush that has bristles in three different directions, then use a toothbrush. And a few minutes after putting the lube on I take it for a short ride to make sure lube spreads out.

Proper maintenance of your chain is VITAL! Try to do it every 500 miles. The chain can fail while riding and thats REALLY BAD! Also check chain tension

  • @Greenmarine6 I agree! One key step that most seem to miss is to get the chain a little warm before applying the lubricant.

  • Why do you heat up the chain be4 its waxed and naked without any protection??? Shouldnt u do that after you've put some wax to help it soak in better and add a lil more afterward to let it sit overnight and fully soak in?

  • @Bulgdoom The lube sticks to the chain better when it is warm. Also it is better to warm the chain then apply the lube, then let it sit for a while because one other big help is that it won't fly off and get all over your rim as easily if you lube it then immediately go riding.

  • A corrente ficou limpinha, mas a coroa.... serviço mais porco.

  • It would help to show that the way you sprayed the chain lube on that you will now have to seriously clean the rear wheel and the bikes lower fairing, which now have chain lube all over them....

  • wd40 works great as a cleaner. then i apply chain lube afterwards. to be honest with these new chains lube is not a necessity, they are o ring sealed with lube inside. i once read a review from a magazine that got 12k miles from a chain and sprocket without ever lubing it. lube just makes it last longer and its a but safer to use

  • Hi! Thanks for the vid!

Can you tell me how long did u heat the chain up ? What's a short ride ? 5 minutes on the bike riding 12mph or something like that?

  • @Synisdia Honestly around the block a few times would do just fine.

  • U waxing the chain wrong..U suppose to wax the chain from the inside so the centrefugal force runs it threw the chain,, not lube the outside of the chain ...We never stop learning do we.

  • @Brainiac83 One could also learn to spell "Through" Not "Threw"

  • @banditdave1200 Whats your problem. This isnt school you know.

  • @Brainiac83 Yeah, you're right. He initial was putting it on the outer edges which is useless since it just comes off, but he also sprayed it inside .

  • Get rid of the music and tell me what in the world you are doing and why. Thanks for next to nothing.

  • how often do you clean the chain?

  • @dangel365 i do it 500 miles ( I believe thats also the norm in biker community)

  • soak ur chain in petrol first using a stiff bristle brush to clean.then take d chain out of d petrol when it is clean, hang the chain and allow d petrol 2 evapourate then soak it in oil allowing d oil 2 penetrate into the rollers

  • chain lube is almost useless on the outside of the chain, at least u want some lube everywhere on your bike when u go ride....

lube the inside only. every 2 tanks is the best, and clean it every 4 or 5 tanks.

    chears.

  • you forgot to wear your helmet at step2

  • how much slack do you keep?

  • @tjohn1986 Look at your manual. mine says 1 - 1.5 inches

  • I was going to dissuade you from bothering to clean the chain. That was before I saw that you use chain wax. You'd better clean it every time. FWIW, I never clean my chain. I use a good quality lube (NOT WAX). My chains tend to last 15K+ miles of sport riding. As I'm waiting for the lube to set up before riding again? I clean all the excess lube off the chain. It remains only where it's needed. Enjoy your new toy:-).

  • Nice video. Never thought to take the chain guard off. Great idea. My local dealer said not to spray the outside of the chain.. only the inside as centrifugal force will pull the lube through the chain. Also I like to shove a piece of cardboard up behind the chain to keep the overspray off the tire/fairings.

  • very useful vid, thumbs up

  • Kerosene to clean, then chain lube that is safe for o ring chains. I get 45K miles on my chains before they need to be replaced.

  • good work putting this together

  • Can't u just use WD-40. its a degreaser after all?

  • @Bulgdoom Im still new to this stuff so dont take my word 100%, but i remember my cousin who runs a motorcycle shop saying dont use wd 40 cause it can attract more dirt

  • No, its proven to mess up bairings, so I wouldn't trust it on a chain. Gasoline works well too, and thats cheaper than a can of WD40.

  • @JooKed real true.... to me gasoline is the best mecanic cleaner ever

  • it is also a corrosive

  • how often do i have clean my chain?

    -thanks.

  • @willof729

    Every 500-600 km

  • Good stuff, thanks!

  • Thank you, very helpful !!!

  • Helpfull! and nice editing! 5*s!

  • thanks for vid!!!!!!

  • Very useful :) Thank's.

  • Useful vid

  • Great video, great instructions, and I really admire your attention to detail.

  • my bike is due for a chain cleaning...fun times.

  • this is what i do to my gixxer. nice vid.

  • great video thx

  • Excellent video. Thanks!

  • Or you can buy a kettenmax chain cleaning and lubricating kit, google it or search on youtube for more info on it, no I don't work for them, I just own one...

  • Good work.

I also do that on my motorcycle chains.

  • how often do you clean it?

  • you suppose to lube it every 400miles.

  • i just got a brand new R6 and already has 1700 miles and i was wondering because i noticed the chain was pretty loud. thanx for the info bud.

  • depends on how humid your area is too. clean it more often if you live in a humid environment

  • or you could spray some wd 40, let it sit for 30 minutes, come back, take the bike for a spin, that should clean it, then apply the chain lube.

  • I dont spary on the chain for 2 reasons

one is that wd40 might get into the o-rings and desolve the lube inside. two is that it dries very slow. so I just spary on a rag and wipe.

  • @sunnyjason - WD40 does not wash out the lube. The o-rings don't let the solvent inside. I have used WD40 as a chain cleaner for decades. Tsubaki engineering told me a long time ago that its fine for cleaning o-ring chains and that o-ring chains do not need any lubricant. Chain wax does not much more than attract dirt.

  • Nice music.

  • nice work!

  • I admire your discipline, fella.

I am on my 2nd Fireblade, and I have promised myself that I will look after this one.

I have went through a feair few chain/sprocket kits on the old bike, and it's age shows badly. If I had adopted the discipline you show here, it'd probably still be my main bike.

    Top effort.

  • This guy has alot of time on his hands! I spray the chain with the garden hose while I'm washing the bike, then lube it once its dry.Works fine-will never get out a toothbrush and piss around like that.

  • what rear stand is that and how much

  • dude how often do you clean your chain? it looks like you clean it as often as you brush your teeth. man, seriously that chain looked clean even before you worked on it. not to mention your ride. sure wish some of your cleaning habits would rub off on me.

  • How EXACTLY do you remove the cleaning agent from the chain before applying the lube?

Do you wrap a rag around the cleaned chain and hold it in you hand while spinning the wheel with the other hand to absorb it?

This is the single part of the process that remains unclear to me.

I didn't know about the taking a short ride part to heat the chain back up. Thanks for the post. Would appreciate even a brief reply.

  • I just cleaned it the best I could then I let everything dry off.

  • Nice vid. I never clean my chain!

  • Great video, concise and informative! I have a YZ 125, I guess I could do the same with something stronger than a toothbrush? Any thoughts?

  • The video is really well done but what a load of messing around. This is the perfect example of why to get a Scottoiler.

  • whats the soundtrack?

  • That chain is already hella clean already!! How often do you clean it?

  • First off WD-40 is not good to use. It will make its way into the chain and displace both water and lube, making ur chain prone to snapping and rusting. Kerosene is what the manual calls for and is by far the best cleaner. I have no idea why people use products that manufactures stay pacifictally NOT TO USE!

  • what about the dark side of the moon, homes? still gritty. better to just remove altogether

  • wow so many idiotic comments in here. saady2s thinks chain wax is a cleaner. that or kerosene is. cause if you use wd-40 as your only lubricant you are a moron. it is used as a cleaner before the lub whether it be chain wax or gear oil. then we have kiriakost1969 who thinks only the o-rinks need lubricate. do u like rusty chain? guess so. ugh.

  • Scottoiler.

  • great cheers

  • The truth is that DID states , that the chains need lubrication , from the inner side to outside.

The hard part is to do that with out to spray from a side position.

And the lubrication have to go only at the orings , and nowhere else.

  • is DID really the best chain? I have one on my bmx.

  • You are not protecting the tyre from the lube, you just spray it on like it is ok to get some wax on your reartyre and other parts :))) Rock'n'Roll baby huh

  • I just cleaned my chain. After some research on the forums I decided to use wd-40 instead of kerosene or chain wax. I pretty much did the same thing as shown in the video, but I used wd-40 instead. No chain waxing required for me. Vid is helpful. Thanks.

  • Are you serious? How on earth did you decide to not us wax after researching forums? And how did you come to the conclusion that wax, wd-40 and kerosene are the same thing.

I'm gonna feel really bad for the sucker that buys your bike after you're done with it. Piss poor maintenance isn't good, especially on an R1.

  • Have you ever tried WD-40 on a chain?? Clean your chain (if you have one) with it and you'll see. And WD 40 also works as a chain wax. Chain is perfectly fine.

Chain is not picking up dirt as it would with some other chain wax. The o rings are cleaner and flexible (for the lack of batter word).

Be practical and do research rather than just typing up "poor maintenance"

  • NO!

DO NOT USE WD40 AS CHAIN LUBE!

My friend learnt the hard way as his chain snapped!

  • i clean and lube my chain every 300 kms with wd40,the chain and sprockets have 12k on them and they are like new, and i ride toped out in 6th all day.I only recently started using wax and i dont see a diference

  • It's like saying my grandad smoked 100 cigarettes a day for 40 years and is fine!(false story). Your'e very lucky!

Understanding what WD40 is designed for makes it clear not to use it as lube and I'm not doubting what you say, I'm just concerned for your safety.

  • Wow, just wow. WD-40 is most certainly not a chain lube.

    From Motorcyclist magazine:

MC: Any thoughts on the use of WD-40 as a chain lube for O-ring chains?

PJH: Whether it's WD-40 or LPS3, a motorcycle chain has such demands on it, and one of them is absorbing shock, whether it's between the sprockets and the chain, or whether it's between the internal parts of the chain. And WD-40 doesn't have that, it's not designed for that purpose, it's not formulated for that.

  • Type "wd-40 chain lube" into google and you'll see the entire first page is devoted to people that essentially say "never use wd-40 as a lube".

    My favourite:

Bicycle chains, on the other hand, are far too heavy and fast-moving for the lubricating power of WD-40 to have any effect at all. As a matter of fact, WD-40 will actually strip away any existing lubricant and leave your drivetrain dry - metal on metal. Basically, spraying this stuff on your chain is worse than using no lubricant at all!"

  • Mate, the reason why it is not "picking up" any dirt as you say it would with other brands is because THERE IS NOTHING THERE FOR IT TO STICK TO!!

If the chain had an oil based lube on it, this dirt or grime would stick to it, same with the wax... the dirt would stick to it.

You're chain has no grime on it because the grime has nothing to stick to.

    Sorry mate, don't use WD40.

Although, i can't talk , I never EVER clean my chain.. although I do lube it occasionally.

  • Lol. WD-40 is nothing like wax. Sure, it cleans your chain well but it also messes up your O-rings.

Where are you getting this information? Using WD-40 as a chain cleaner let alone lubricant is piss poor maintenance.

  • wd40 does not mess up your orings...in a study between 15 popular lubes wd40 deteriorated the oring the less.

  • Comment removed

  • I wouldn't use WD either but that bike is on 'o7 CBR600RR mate not an R1.

  • I was talking to saady2s. He said he uses WD-40 and he's posted videos of his R1.

Get the full story before commenting.

  • "Get the full story before commenting."

Clearly I didn't do homework as a kid.

Well no doubt... WD on a yammy, can one expect anything less?? lol j/k

  • I am not the one using wd 40 here, dont get me confused with someone else!!

  • ??

Did I say you were?? I believe I commented on the make and model of your bike.

    No need to get defensive.

Thanks for posting this vid though. ;)

  • Did I say that you said I was? ???

  • Comment removed

  • @gsixty Children

  • @gsixty WD40 is not bad at all if u dry it real good.... it s actually better than a lot of chain cleaner with bad agents in it....

  • nice job... can U do for my Bike :D???

  • instead of a tooth brush, you should try a the "grung brush" i think itruns like from 12-20 dollars, and comes with replacment brushes, and all you need is brake clearner then brush, brake cleaner again to take off dirt with a rag, then chain lube

  • Hey, nice video. It'll be helpful when I do mine. Where did you get that rear wheel stand? looks like it makes chain cleaning much easier than rolling the bike.

  • You can purchase it anywhere online. The one im using is a pitbull. I bought it used on ebay.

  • thanks man.

  • One of the better videos I've seen and he goes over how to clean the chain as well. Nice job.

  • That chain looked like it didn't need a clean!

  • good informative video, bro! Saw your link in the 600RR forum. Good tune for this too!

    ~LanCo Rider

  • nice video.you really were cleaning the hell out of that chain haha. I use the same chain wax, it's great.

  • Good video, but if you really wana do it right don't lube the chain like he did. why you ask??? cause the first sprays he did was on the outside of the chain, and when he starts going fast all the lube he sprayed on the outside is gona get flaked off! so spray in the inter of the chain!

  • ..so i later noticed.....

  • looks like a ninja fo sho. good bike

  • looks like a cbr to me...

  • "Bike shown is a 07 CBR 600rr."

  • Nice video. For chain lubrication I have been using a Scottoiler (realtime chain lube device - easy to fit) for many years. The claims made on their web site are correct. Very low maintenance and very long chain life.

  • wata kinnd bike do u have a a ninja?

  • aWESOME vIDEO

  • Another great video! Lets see a chain tention adjustment too! Your videos make do it yourself look so easy. Thanks brother. Ride Safe

  • to clean can u use gasoline ????is using gasoline bad ?

  • Gasoline has solvents that damage the o-rings in your chain, kerosene is really the best option.

  • by doing this how long does it prolong the chain for

  • cool vid i have a cbr600 myself but when i wax i only wax the inside of the chain because when you ride the wax will push through and not fly off !!!!

  • How often do you do this?

  • I try to do a thorough clean every 1k miles and i do a quick wipe down with chain wax every 500 miles.

  • sweet video!! love the cbr.. can't wait to get one.. went with a 250r my first year of riding and now think i'm ready to play with something bigger (well they're not actually that much bigger but more power :)..

anyway your video's rock, dig your selection of music too, what's playing this time? more tycho?

  • I don't know man, someone sent me a bunch of songs one time and i just dropped them all into a folder. They seemed to fit the mood well for background music. It's either Particle or Tycho

  • @viewdo600rr can any new idea what the music might be?

  • Comment removed

  • This is a really useful video for new motorcyclists like myself. Many thanks.

  • hey no problem, we're all learning every day.

  • thanks for the video, I got a ducati 900 and Im a noob when It comes to bikes my chain is pretty sloppy right now, its making a mess and could use a good cleaning

  • If you want to give it a nice clean you might want to look at loosening your rear wheel and dipping the chain in some kerosene for several hours, just keep spinning the chain every now and then. The chain will come out brand new, then you just have to wax it. It's more time consuming but a very thorough clean.

  • Take a short ride to warm up the chain... without any protective gear. lol

    Loved the video though.

  • it's around my neighborhood at like 10 mph, give me a break :/

I never go out on the road without a helmet/jacket/boots. This is not a safety video, I'm not going to get into full gear to warm up a chain. Safety is always good, let's not go crazy here. Thanks for the input though.
