I have recently caught a few thief ant queens. Would it be more benificial to start them in a test tube or move them right away into a small plaster nest?
@LadyLoita18 Yes, at our website in the FAQ section we recently opened a new Ant Database/Basic Care Sheet section with information on the care of specific species, including C. penn. Check it out! Hopefully you can get a few helpful tips! :) Good luck!

Thank you. No, this is a Lasius neoniger queen caught during a nuptial flight here last year. We do not have Lasius niger in North America though sometimes I wish we did. :) Thanks for your question, wowedo2!
@DrJowenz Lasius neoniger is a subspecies of Lasius niger, but they are generally treated like two distinct ants, in much the same way our house dogs are regarded different from dingos in Australia, though technically they are very close relatives if not the same species.
Hey AntsCanada!
I recently caught a bunch of these queens today. I guess their nickname 'Labor Day Ants' is pretty accurate.
Do you have any advice for keeping this species in general? I have checked out their FAQ Caresheet on your site.

@bentleyboy72 No, not a plaster nest. It will mold and you will have to figure out how to get the queen and brood out. Go for the test tube setup. :)

@AntsCanada so what is the difference between lasius niger and neoniger? does lasius neoniger still have no sting like our lasius niger in the uk?
