I always laugh at the sight of Spike being thrown like a rag doll. The sudden cutaway makes it funnier, I guess, but I would have liked to see just how he recovered from that.
For me, it's not really the best scene on bebop...
.
.
.It's when he leaves the crew and make piwheels, paint the floor bye'-bye and Ein followed him all the way.. u may disagree but it's kinda touchy and cute.
@Initial3t Adrian Brody would be more fitting.. Maybe, MAYBE.. Joseph Gordon-Levitt.. other then that I'm happy with it remaining one of the best animes of all time (If not, the best.)
regardless of how good a fighter you are, somewhere in the world there is someone that can kick your ass... spike just found that lesson out for himself :D
Its moments like this, when an anime can juxtapose intensity and lightheartedness - that's what really sticks out in our memories and creates that feeling of awe. This is but one of innumerable moments in this series like that, which makes the series so damn great and nostalgic.
@696pride That is Appledelhi Siniz Hesap Lütfen (Turkish for "Excuse me, check please), Ed's father. He's a very strange man, though I guess you have to be if you're a cartographer on a planet whose landscape is constantly being changed by meteor storms. Kind of explains Edwards (birth name Françoise Appledehli) personality.
nonono spike uses bruce lees fighting style tai chi or some shi8t like that im not sure of the name i do know he fights like water and he uses bruce lees move watch some of the old bruce lee movies and then watch cowboy bebop fights almost the exact same
@bisquittheclown it's called Jeet Kun Doo which was invented by Bruce Lee himself. More of a philosophy than an actual style, it mixes and matches martial techniques to fit the strengths and weaknesses of the individual. In this case Spike particularly identifies with Bruce and almost completely mirrors his skills
@FerretJohn no not at all you can see the "flow like water" philosophy in there but spikes kicks flow much more into each other aare higher and closer to taekwondo at their fanciest, but overall hes shown to be a flexible character and flexible fighter capable of adapting
I love this scene. I always try to watch it when the show is playing, even if I miss most of the episode.
In addition to liking Chinese things (Mars is basically Hong Kong, Spike is like Bruce Lee, a lot of the fighting in Bebop is Chinese, They had a fengshui episode, he managed to put Chinese martial arts into a samurai drama-like story, etc.), the creator of Bebop & Champloo seems to like having an "Ace" character show up near the end to make the badass protagonist look foolish.
@CriTicOfsOrts I'm not sure what you mean. Anyway, the reasons I use "Chinese martial arts" is because "kung-fu" actually means hard work and does not need to pertain to fighting at all. "Wushu" means martial arts, though to most people, Chinese included, it's a specific kind of performance martial art.
When I said that Bebop fighting is Chinese, I meant that they resemble various Chinese martial arts (there are a lot of types).
@D9ni3L98 I doubt Mr. Appledelhi (ed's father) could beat Vicious. Remember that Spike is fighting Appledelhi in hand to hand, the guy's a juggernaut Spike can't hurt him but it seems that Mr. Appledelhi wasn't hurting Spike too much either. When Vicious and Spike fight Vicious uses a Katana and still manages to hold his own against Spike who actually uses a gun.
not quite right...in martial arts yes but when you are talking about a serious fight can he kill spike? remember spike was killed several times before..he wont die. realize that when spike and vicious fights they both will be using weapons like grenades, guns, katana. not just fist fight like here. this episode is just not really being serious just being funny i think.
@jaymezy26 Not really, he never really gets "his ass handed to him" he just never stood a chance... and even so the guy is holding back... each time he strikes Spike goes down, but never with a serious injury. There were plenty of other fights where he comes out battered, shot, and bloody...in those he definitly got his ass handed to him.
Seriously?! Why doesn't this have more views?! One of the few fights where Spike Spiegel is just completely 100% outmatched. I mean against the Mad Pierrot (sp?) he at least stood a chance, but this was just sad.
@chapacoka And why has no one posted the fight with Hakim? Amazing Bebop scene... emulating the great fight between Bruce Lee and Kareem Abdul Jabbar... sheer brilliance.
@chapacoka Eh, I'd say that in raw combat ability, Mad Pierrot is more threatening than Ed's dad. I just doubt the latter has any crippling flaws, like a hysterical and infantile fear of cats.
@chapacoka Seriously, he got his ASS whupped here. It's hilarious how a guy out of nowhere is just a complete fucking brick wall that doesn't even flinch that entire scene. It's just great.
I think it was more of a thematic fight. Ed's dad is like fate, he's unmoving in a chaotic world. Even when a ship nearly crushes him, he doesn't move. He spends his life trying to bring order to chaos. Spike is the opposite, he lets life take him, it's reflected in his fighting style. The fight is a metaphor for Spike's fate, he's fighting against a destiny he can't hope to win against,. That was my take on the fight.
@DarkCaduceus Wow...I never thought of it like that...that is definitely a much more philosophical view on this fight than my own view. The deepest I ever thought about this fight was, "Damn Spike, you got your ass handed to you."
I think there's alot of subtext in CBB that's easily missed. Even note all the emphasis on dreaming in the show, the movie begins with Spike dreaming, and "Toys in the Attic" has a dark creature that puts people to sleep. Spike sees his life as if it's just a dream he was watching, which is the same thing with Vincent Volaju in the movie.
Both characters undergo a Joycian Epiphany when they realize that they're alive, but it's very melancholy=> their ideology is destroyed.
The song is called "Don't bother none". I only found the long version though
