The reason the album sounds so raw and dirty is a recording technique called "clipping". It's where all the levels hit the max and create a distortion. It's pretty cool, read about it on Wikipedia

The only think I didn't like about the Brown Album is that some of the songs sound muffled, especially the drums. They just don't sound as clear as they do on the other albums. Great album though.
