Great bassline, which goes to show you that bass players in swing bands from the 40´s had an awfully complicated job. The only criticism I can give zodiakironfist is that you are motivating me to grab my basses and sell them, after looking at you playing this swinging bass line...excellent.
I LOVE that you at times break away from your core genres posted to share other random groups like the Police, Power Station or CPD. I have a wide range of music that I enjoy from thrash to old be-bop jazz to country to electronica, so to see these variations on your core group of rock performances is highly enjoyable, and furthers my appreciation of your talent. Thanks again for posting these videos of yours, I watch them near-daily like a fiend. ROCK ON MAN!
You have my wife to thank for the variety. She turned me on to digging on pop and swing, and when she gets it in her mind that I am supposed to play a tune, then by God I am going to play it. She has a lot of leverage with me. :)
I appreciate the kind words, and I am humbled that you have seen my stuff so much. I'm just a goober playing in his living room, so it still freaks me out that anyone watches me play at all. Needless to say, I am thankful.
dude, its prety much fast walking.....just listen to the song and it will come to you...but you will need a rick to make it sound right....like the man here uses
Also, if you think CPD are a "swing band" check out any of their 5 albums that aren't swing compilations. ZSR is simply a collection of the 2 or 3 swing songs from each of the previous albums along with a few new tracks. In truth, their complete body of work spans and masters tons of genres. There are a lot of other great bass lines to be found, too. :)
The people saying "great performance" have obviously never heard the song. You're playing it completely wrong (or are way out of tune, or both) throughout most of the song, including the dead-easy parts like at 00:33. I'm not usually one to bag on someone showing off his talents online, but when I see a favorite song get murdered like this I can't help it.
I play the way I play....some like it, others dont' (the ones who decide to come in here with a mind to be picky), and I do not apologize for it. Obviously you are of the latter group. I simply play different and I make up parts...ESPECIALLY when parts are "dead-easy" as you say. And you will note that many people who have commented positively have indeed heard the song...many of whom are other bass players, as well. If you do not come here with an open mind, do not come here at all...simple
That's a heap of crap from someone who hasn't posted any videos of his own. LRRG's performance is a lot better than I aspire to, and sounded pretty damn good to me. Instead of bagging on him why don't you show us how it is supposed to be played? Man up or shove off you troll. LRRG, thanks for the tunes.
Wow, what a great performance...don´t particularly like the plunga plunga plunga sound of the rickenbacker...but the performance is great, what a demanding piece. Imagine one of the 40´s bands playing with a modern electric bass and amplifier...Great educational piece, thank you.
Hi, 6 months later I review this video and NOW I love that plunga plunga sound of the Rickenbacker. My only critic now: zodiakironfist is making me ashamed of how I play and makes me want to sell my basses...ha, ha..this shows that bass players from swing bands from many years ago had a tough job. Nice again...and bobbyconover can kiss everybody´s ass here.
This is just my inner fanboy speaking, but I wouldn't peg Cherry Poppin' Daddies as a swing band. Their albums are far too diverse to place them in any one genre. Have you heard the stuff that wasn't on Zoot Suit Riot?
Where did the big LRRG in the background come from? You seem to be usin your Rick a lot more lately, which is cool, i used to want one actually lol. This song was not what i was expecting from the name, its heaps better! I thought it was gonna be slow with a sick grow instead its nice and fast and just awesome! Lookin forward to the other swing stuff you post man.
For Christmas, my wife bought me four wooden letters "LRRG", and the paints to paint them with. So, on Christmas night, I painted them black with flames and hung them on the wall. They are removable, so I set them up on the keyboard for this "Buddha" position video.
As usual, you are too kind, Ale. And you bet swing is hard to play! I am still learning to flow and to get the walking notes 100% correct. But hey...adding this style to my reportiore can only help an old slammer like me.
CPDs are great for stage bands. Back in the day, our stage band was stuck with early swing because nothing new had come out in that genre for years (I didn't play in the stage band, just knew a lot of people in it). The mid-90's changed all of that. thank god.
i mean honestly ur the only LRRG i watch regularly and have watched videos of multiple times, youve got such originality (or as much as possible with cover) and so much other great shit. bravo man really
I have no objection to you lobbying for those tunes. You'll get em eventually. I just like for there to be a space of time between another LRRG releasing a tune and me doing it. I am careful not to replicate your stuff, either (I scratched Groundhog's Day for now because you had done a version of it), because even though you are not an official member, you are still an LRRG I know. I want to maximize your views, not dip from the same well.
to add onto that id like to think that in a month or two when i finally get my computer working right and i finally get some new videos up that once covered you will stay away from. not even just me all LRRGs for that matter.
I can't speak for the rest of them. This is my personal rule, nothing more. I will probably wait until you pass at least 2,500 views before I even think about it. I am idealistic and follow my own rules like a religion.
Well, I am not a natural at this stuff, obviously, but I do so love it. It is a great departure from my normal fare, and it teaches me a lot of what I can do walking-wise.
Oh, by the way, I am ready for you on 22 Acacia. Made the video/bass part today and am ready to add your video/track when the time comes. \m/ It'll be epic!
You poor guitar players. We bass players get a solo once in a blue moon, so we can just tear through the songs...learn 'em by the hundreds. But you guys have to learn some crazy solo for just about EVERY TUNE! I don't now how you guys keep that all in your head.
I hope you understand, Rob, you're now the king of coolness. This was awesome. Simply awesome. So awesome that all I can think of saying is: hey! the singer sounds a bit like Les!
5 stars, because there aren't any more, fav'd and a couple of Mike Myers' "We're not worthy!"'s
Thanks, Pook. I am little wet from all the praise you're showering, there. (grabs an umbrella). I made a few minor mistakes, but I am glad to get some swing out, finally.
At first, I didn't like the singer, but his voice grew on me. Now I think he is the coolest daddio ever to grace the swing stage. This band is an absolute favorite for the wife and I to play on trips...there is something for both of us in this music...which is pretty rare.
It is a great form of music. My parents never dug it too much, but the grandparents sure loved it. Stragely enough, the grandparents were right...this stuff rocks. The main nuggets are the beats....so precise and so smooth.
Without a doubt!! That fast chorus part is a bitch, and I still don't play it quite clean as I want, but ah hell, I'm happy:P Now on to the Immigrant Song!
well, amazing, I loved your way to play it.

If you love the bass line on this Daddies tune, have you heard the bass line on their song "
Flovilla Thatch vs. The Virile Garbageman" on their first album Ferociously Stoned?

I have not heard that song, but since you mentioned it, I will give it a listen. Thanks a bunch for the info.
