No drummer is better then the other. To think that way just means you need to understand music.
music is not a competition to think otherwise is just stupid. neither of these 2 drummer suck or can play better then the other, their just different. Its ok to like 1 more then the other but to say 1 wins is just a stupid uneducated way of thinking.
tim was awesome at subtly complex beats, just like claypool often played deceptively complex riffs. primus early work was the kind of stuff that was super impressive if you knew what they were doing, but if you're not a musician you might not hear the complexities. i'm not too sure than many people who don't play drums are hearing the ghost rolls and wild kicks in sgt baker. the same goes for the wacky riff in jerry was a racecar driver. tim simply fit the band's style better.
For myself being a drummer, this is the way I look at it. Tim Alexander is an amazing technical drummer, and made great grooves with primus, then Bryan, who is not nearly as technical, had a great driving groove that gave primus this new feel. The Brown album is one of my favorite albums because of how relaxing it is, I don't see Tim being able to put that kind of antipop/brown chemistry into primus. Then there is Jay, who to me is like a mix of tim and brain. He has a great amount of funk.
tim is my hero hands down!!!! but i saw Brain in Portland with Claypools Bucket of bernie Brains and he did a 35 minute solo that blew my mind......not as technical as Tim or Jay...but pretty amazing, very Buddy Rich like. my favorite drummers have all been Primus drummers......i love em all.
Both good but I personally like Herb's approach to the drums...Brain's style sounds very "now"...you know...he leaves no signature on his stuff. If you close your eyes and have someone play his drumming...you can't tell exactly who it is...but, with Herb you know after just measure. Nothing against Brain but...it's just my outlook on it.
Herb all the way. No-one can emulate what he does on the Frizzle Fry & Suck On This albums:> I personally don't believe Brain should even be mentioned in a comparison.
@ThrobnWood No one should. They should add their own style to the song, not emulate someone else. They're all fucking amazing, but I prefer Jay Lane. He has the most 'natural' style IMO. But that's just me.
I think you're so wrong. Herb has zero personality and it's evident in his playing. Brain is full of groove. I personally don't believe someone like you should even be allowed to comment on this video. Looking forward to hear your response.
MrsTreeOwl shut the fuck up.You don't know what the you're talking about. Both drummers are good.Tim is better. Check out,Laundry, attention Deficient or Tales from the Punchbowl's"Southbound Pachyderm"just his opening roll alone.Or his foot work on"Sgt Baker".Don't sit and be a internet tough guy,"Someone like you should even"B.S.Even if you don't like his style, any real musician can recognize his skill.Don't come back with a bunch of garbage, cause I'm never looking at this again.
cool concept, I would have tried to pick solos that showcase the different style of each drummer. Brain's got that super groovy funk attack which is more my preference. Tim is super technical and on point, which is awesome too. As far as primus music goes it dont matter whose drummin Les is the effin man...and thats coming from a drummer.
@PushedBox I think Tim is the only Primus drummer. Say what you will about Lane, Mantia, Huth...those guys were never named drummer of the year x number of years in a row by modern drummer, compared to Neil Peart, and Primus wouldn't have gotten or maintained there fans without him. I'm bassist and I love Les, but Les, Ler, and Tim are peers. Journeymen playing together as a unit. Like Rush. That was the magic of Primus.
Tim Alexander has precision and good timing. Bryan Mantia is a little raw which is cool I think for Primus' sound. But Tim is noticeably better! Ahhhh poor brain! Cry me a fuckin river! Do people think there going to hurt his feelings..... jesus fucking christ, lets be honest. TIM ALEXANDER!!!!!
@dbonesbone Obviously Tim is the better choice, but Bryan "Brain" Mantia is still good. He stills plays with Claypool in Colonel Claypool's Bucket of Bernie's Brains.
brain looks like a nob, especially when hes drumming he looks like hes munching a cock, which he probly is when he gets back stage and his overall sound is just so faggoty compared to herb, he fucked playing with primus big time...prick
@petersinol you're right...it is really a matter of taste...but Brain cannot play Jerry Was A Race Car Driver ...To me, that's what earns you the right to play with Primus. 3 have played, only 2 have succeeded (Tim, of course, and the present drummer, Jay Lane.)
@BabySkinSneakers ...except play Jerry Was A Race Car Driver... Jay and Tim can do it... Brain can't....sorry. search the tube and listen and see for yourself...
I've been listening to both these guys since the 80s...Tim in Primus and Brain in the Limbomaniacs and Ted Zeppelin...Tim is the better drummer any way you slice it. It's not even an apples vs oranges thing...Tim is simply better. Brain would even tell you that.
This doesn't show Tim's true skills at all. He does all his best playing during the songs. It's an overall thing wit Herb. Listen to Primus albums from '89-'95 & ye see what I mean. But if we're talking solos then put up Herb's awesome solo from Jellikit, off the 'Suck On This' album. I've got it in my favs section for anyone who's interested. :>
TIM ALEXANDER, no doubt about it... after 20 years waiting, yesterday we saw Primus for the first time Live in Argentina and everyone was pleased because the new drummer's style, Jay Lane, is far more similar to Tim's than Brain... BTW, The Best Primus Discs are the ones that include Tim's Playing.
@sebavitali Exactly! When I first heard about the reunion, I was scared that it would be like Brain's playing all over again, which has its perks, but Tim's style is unbeatable, and thankfully, Jay can hold it down just as well, if not better!, AND with a little more groove, tricks, and spectacle! :) <3 Jay Lane
Both are pros. but styles are different. When I was younger, I liked Tim's style more--but these days, I really dig Brain's style. his sense of groove is just amazing. hit hi-hat work and independence is killer. I appreciate his subtlety--especially when he drummed on that Sausage album. I can listen to his playing all day. just to take a hi-hat, snare and bass drum and do something so solid and cool-sounding--as well as technically challenging is really something I admire.
For me its Tim "herb" alexander!! Just listen to the Frizzle Fry album... its unbelievavble how he has so much going on in that album. He hits 5 notes in a time that others can only hit 2, the layers on that album is incredible!
To me Brian will always be better than Tim. Tim is good too, but Brian was the fucken man in Primus. Saw them twice with Brian on the skins....amazing!!!
