Has anyone eclipsed Al Bowlly in the years since he died? I don't think so. He's one of those rare people who live on even many years ater their death as in the case of Al. He is, in my opinion, the greatest singer of his genre who ever lived
This tremendous song from the depths of the Depression has few peers!!I love Ray Noble and of course the Fabulous AL BOWLLY.Reading into Bowlly;s life is so sad as he truly would have eclipsed his contemporaries.Born of Greek and Lebanese parents he rose to fame in Britain in the 20's& 30's after leaving South Africa. I never knew of him until age 62 and now 3 years later his music is so near and dear!!!!! Talk about Totally FORGOTTEN!!!
@dholm5058 And I learned of Al just a year ago but, same reaction as you, with a playlist for him with 40 songs so far. I've got 550 playlists for 330 great artists like Al. Then, 111 list let you hear him in the context of the day - a list for every year since 1900, so this now graces the 1934 playlist. Hope you'll stop by! Chuck
So many people lost their lives during the Blitz on London from the GODDAMN NAZIS ...but I was taken aback to see that's how AL Bowlly died....I had NO idea...He burned to death in his London flat...Thank you Hitler...Remember this my friends...when you witness, see, or smell a HATE crime...SCREAM!!!! RUN AND MASH...Freedom of speech...OK! Neo Nazism is right there with the KKK... give us the memories of a beautiful man like Al Bowlly...May you rest in peace my Sir.
@Memusclebear Correction: Bowlly hit his head (or something flew at him) and the resulting blow killed him instantly. There were no marks on his body when they found him.
actually he didnt burn to death, he was found dead but apparently physically unharmed. The bomb fell outside his home and the shock must have killed him. @Memusclebear
is it possible to share an entire playlist with me? i adore each and every song on this one-you've captured my heart as it stands right now!PLEASE send it to me!! i'll be eternally grateful-i just subscribed!! THANK YOU!! If you are a man, will you mary me? lol
Al Bowlly & Ray Noble Orchestra - When You' ve Got the Little Springtime In Your Heart, 1934 - it interprets it to As much how much music is well older of what I, but considering itself that good taste and sensitivity independem one of the other, cannot leave to register my satisfaction to hear sounds of other times, where was possible to dream of the great love.
A friend in faraway Tbilisi played recordings of Al Bowlly to me in the bygone 60s. I've been hooked ever since. My friend wore a bowtie and a fedora, hummed together with Al and loved red wine. He's gone now, like many others swept away by the whirlwind of change. God bless them all, I think of them every day. Thank you.
I grew up in wartime London living next the cemetery and, as a young man, made a few visits to the monument to read his name. He had ignored the siren to go to the shelter and stayed in bed reading a cowboy paperback . This lovely record is so nostalgic for me.
Wonderful that you had a chance to visit the memorial. This song was my Mom and Dad's favorite, I had introduced it to them on a cassette I made.back in 1980 for Christmas. So it had fond memories for me also.
Fred, Al Bowlly was my Mum's favourite but she was too upset to visit with me. The same cemetery is where she and many of my past relatives are now so I like to think in one sense he is a part of the family.
What a nice thought about Al and your family Fatsfan. Listening to it right now I can see my parents dancing, and were they great dancers! I tried hard but my dad was as good as they get.
Fred, My parents danced beautifully too - I later became a silver medallist but still get a thrill remembering them together at the Park Hotel regular dances or just at home with the carpet rolled back!
this is a wonderful song, and with noble and bowlly it's simply the best. i am fortunate to have this recording in my collection...a gem! thanks so much.
