I loved the '99 season. I'd been following JPM for some years before, back from the RSM Marko and Supernova days. Even though this season was a close battle on paper, as JPM & Franchitti were tied for points at the finale in Fontana, for those that watched the whole season, it wasn't even close. JPM utterly dominated, and it was HUGELY evident that he towered above the field in skill and aggressiveness.
Love JPM or hate him, he's one of the best of all time. Resume says it all.
@TheJoshie4 If this is after 1996, it's after split. And since it's clearly a turbocharged engine, it's CART (if I'm not mistaken, CART became CCWS later on...)
Montoya is surely the most talented driver of the last 15 years. No doubt every car he drive he shows huge attitude and natural talent . No other driver like him. Surely the best after Senna.
Andretti won a world championship in Formula 1, something Monty never achieved, though not that he ever had a car good enough to achieve that during his F1 career. The 2003 Williams was closest to that but still not as good Ferrari throughout the season.
@RedPhroggz -Andretti was showing great skill whatever car he was driving,
but frankly his Lotus 79 was from sth another planet. Moreover the JPSLotus team policy about strict hierarchy between drivers (Peterson having been scheduled to fully support him) allowed Andretti to take it easy smhow.
Montoya drove pretty fast cars and in 2003 perhaps the most performing as far as raw speed is concerned:alas reliability was often lacking and his driving a bit too emotional as a F1 driver.
and He will be the next driver (aside from Graham Hill) to have won the world´s Trriple Crown: Indy, 500, Monaco GPrix an Le Mans 24 Hours.
He will be among the greatest drivers of all time, an all around driver capable of driving in many different series trought his career... when he achieves the goal of winning the LeMan 24 Hours.
The only thing left in the world for Montoya is to win: Le Mans 24 Hours. He´s won on Karts, Formula Renault, Vauxhaul Series, Mexican Formula N, F3000, CART, IRL, F1, American Le Mans Series and NASCAR.
He is one of only two pilots in the world who have won Indy 500, Daytona 24 Hours and CART series. The other being Mario Andretti.

Good grief... how far out in front was he? I saw this live but don't remember..

He won by 11s from Tracy after starting 8th on the grid- had some problems in qualifying.
Podemeister 3 years ago
It looked like a huge margin because I couldn't see anyone behind him on the last lap :) Not bad for starting 8th at this track.
