Craziest declaration ever. Gary forgot that there was no Hall at P of Spain and Griffith, bowled only 3 overs in the first innings, and was injured. 215 off 50 plus overs was an easy Gillette Cup type target of the sort English batsmen were comfortable with. Batsman's pitch too. Saw Sobers at his peak in 1966, a phenom.....but this declaration probably showed why poor Gary lost most of his money in the end on horses that turned out slower than he thought.
Cowdrey was stamped a batsman, but I saw him take a catch at 1st slip once down on his ankles and he put the ball in his pocket! the batsman did not even know it, the umpire gave out and he took the ball out of his pocket and showed the batsman! brilliant! I think it was against india... years ago of course
Relax, man. What you are seeing is one of Sobers' worst spells. A swallow doesn't make a summer, man!
And remember, he used to play in a side where Hall, Griffith and Gilchrist would already haved wreaked havoc. So, he was seldom reqd. to run through batting line-ups. he just focussed his energies in batting. When needed, he could step up a gear in bowling and bowl really fast, cutters or spin.
Thanks for post. Sobers was Windies skipper and generously declared giving England a chance of winning a match that should have been drawn. England were given 53 overs to score 215 runs. Such a generous declaration was never again made in Test cricket, until Cronje handed England a win in a dead rubber some 30 years later. I don't know if Sobers had been in contact with his bookmaker but this series was still alive. England did'nt win another series in the West Indies til 2004.
Barrington, who had batted at No4 in the first innings was dropped down the order as England were in a run chase and was not needed. The batter with the glasses is not MJK Smith but Geoff Boycott, who batted throughout England's innings.

Back then it didn't matter - pitches were uncovered and it was an even match between batters and bowlers :)

I didn't know Kenneth Williams did cricket commentary.

Late reply I know, but the 'Kenneth Williams' style commentator is actually Denis Compton!

What a pathetic bowler Sobers was...Great batsman, but equally pathetic as a bowler...and a pretender of an allrounder...

He got more than 200 test wickets !!!
veruthe 3 years ago 2
Yeah at 35 a piece the worst average for any bowler taking more then 100 wickets...could not have made the team solely as a bowler...
