  • actually

  • After washing the metal ready, do you have to sand it before painting with epoxy primer / 2k primer? Or can you just prime without sanding it first?

  • @socamoto .....Always sand the metal first, this gives the paint proper adhesion .

  • Or there is a simpilar way.... take a grinder and bottle of vinegar and a cloth and rub the vinegar on the rust and let it sit for alittle bit and take the grinder and grind it all off and it will get you done to bar metal

  • :O just plain regular molasses????? that is amazing

  • Great tips thanks!

Would you dry it with compressed air and etch prime it immediately?

  • @socamoto ....yes you can...... I have . Cheers

  • ok so finally took my panels out tonight, just wanting to know if you let your panels dry before you spray them with the por15 or do you spray it on right after washing?

I cant see on your finished panels but does it still have any rusted colouring after you use the por15 or have a done something wrong?

  • @dickieboy25 .........Always dry first, then you can see where it may flash rust again and if it does , I simply apply a heavy coat of Por 15 and let it sit until the flash rust disappears, then rinse off LIGHTLY with water then let dry.

  • hey you show some doors you have done, how do you get your por15 into the sections of the door you cant spray?

I am considering dipping my chassis but there are a few areas that you cant get to and I don't want to have it rust from the inside out.

have you dipped a chassis before? any tips?

  • @dickieboy25 ....... You will have to drill some holes in the sections, let the solution do its thing , flush with water, let dry completely then pour some primer paint or top coat into these holes and turn the item around so it hits all sides. Let dry then weld holes back up .

Don't laugh ...I have done this.

    Cheers dave

  • Do you only have molasses in the tub, or did you add something with it in the tub.

  • Comment removed

  • @dickieboy25 ......Molassis only :-).....oops add water.

    Cheers Dave

  • The downside to this is obviously the expense of what mollasses cost! Its high, especially if you have to use alot of it like you probably did for that huge tub.

  • @ahafan64 .........To give you an example it cost me $150.00 for 120 litres ( around 25 gallons) and mixed it with 1500 litres of water.

The tank is a 2000 litre feed trough .

Not sure what the price is in your area , though let me know as I can now export it .

    Cheers Dave

  • If you wanna remove rust in 5 minutes use some Myriatic acid! Just make sure you watch out for the yellow smoke. It's very painful.

  • @VinnyMartello .......Not for me, I want my paint to stay on in years to come :)

  • well, being just a girl ...and NOT knowing a thing about car restoration... this is frigging amazing ...

I really did enjoy your video and your accent was neat to listen to too ;)

  • @914light .....Thanks from Australia :)

    Cheers Dave

  • HI, very informative tutorial thanks.

How long does the mix last?

I heard it will eventually go off.

I have a 1000L cube I am going to cut the top out for my 29 Dodge C Cab parts, the biggest thing to go in will be the cowl.

    Cheers, Waz.

    Sydney, Australia.

  • @MrWiseArse ...... It will last around 6 months

  • Is there any particular type of molasses to use? There is a few types like un-sulphered, black strap, light and dark,? Which type do you use? Thanks for posting this as well,, very informative and i like the idea that it won't damage the panels. I will for sure be trying this on my new project!!

  • @siTTinLo420 ........black strap

  • People , haven`t you all seen what Coca-Cola can do with metal ?? Put a penny in CocaCola and let sit for a few days flipping it once >> MAJIC !!!

  • Kick my ass! How did you discover to use molasses as a rust remover? It is most definitely something I will try in the near future. Thank you very much for sharing this! Hope to see more from you.

  • We really don't have a lot of molasses around here. Can you use other forms of sugar? Bulk ags of refined white sugar? Cheap soda / high fructose corn syrup? Wonder what kind of bacteria this is, and how the chemical process differs from something like EvapoRust.

  • Thanks for posting, I am definately going to try this!

  • OSPHO.... Phosphoric acid.. its majic and cheap.

  • Salt water rust metals and sugar water removes rust... COOL!

    Thanks for this!

  • Thanks for this!

  • I wonder, how does this stack up again Soda blasting? Perhaps they would even compliment one another? So a 1:9 molassis to water ratio is it? no other ingredients? A couple potatoes? orange, lemon, lime? Joke. Haha.

  • great videos, please make more n keep up the great work.

  • @925dude ..... Thank you, Dave

  • so you cut them down to go / fit in the tub ??

  • Thanx for the info.

  • Fantastic, thanks for the info and the upload :) may try on an old Alfa at some point!

  • Are we talking about the same stuff here??

....today, uses for molassis are quite benign. Some people enjoy using it on hot cereals like cream of wheat or cornmeal mush. Molassis is also a necessary ingredient in the Thanksgiving holiday traditional pumpkin pie. In England, treacle tart, is not, however, made with molasses, but it is enjoyed as a sweetener on porridge and in Australia it appears to have a completely different use!

  • @ajskilton ... No its not the same but similiar, as I would not be putting it on my cereal. Yuk!! ......Treacle yes as it would be further refined.

  • That is impressive for sure and I will use this technic thank you when you siad Molassis to us Americans I think we allthe that was slang for your mix and not literal LOL!!! this is a cool idea and thankyou for it from down under you rock!!!.

  • Ok, what if i don't want to disassemble the car? I mean it isn't possible to soak the whole car for two weeks. I am asking this because I have a 28 ft car trailer that i would like to restore and paint. I finished all the bearings, brakes, lights, and all the mechanical/safety work. It functions very good, but looks like shit!

  • @TutorialTipCom .... If it was my trailer being solid etc I would rather sandblast this. I like my solution as it is more delicate on thinner parts or panels. A trailer can put up with the sandblasting without any damage to it. Just mask the lights etc with a couple of layers of tape and it should be fine.

  • @Desertrodder Thanks, I actually started to do that but gave up after i finished the fenders lol. It is ALOT of work. I took it the sandblasting place, and they are not charging me much to sandblast it. I figured that i will pay the few bucks extra and save my garage from looking like a beach lol.

  • Could you write down a recepiete and send me a messenge on YT so I can see it? didnt get it all with me!

  • @MrHonda250F ...... One part or gallon of Molassis mixed with 9 parts or gallons of water. Mix it all up let it sit over night , this makes sure it is diluted properly then throw your parts in. Pull them out in around a two week period , but you can check them during this time as they may not need as long, wash them with a pressure washer works better but you can use the garden hose if you have good pressure and presto all done. Cheers

  • Hey am def gonna give this a try.

if I was to leave panels in solution for 4 weeks, what affect would it have on the paint

I would like to clean it all right back to bare steel

    Cheers

  • @dickieboy25 .....It all depends on the age of the paint. I have had the paint removed without a problem , sometimes I may have to put it back in the solution for another week but if it is that tuff to remove then I leave it till I'm ready to sand the car for primer and paint.

As there is usually no rust under good paint

  • Thanks, Also will it eat into clean metal if i leave parts in to long? or does it only remove rust

  • @mrcampers123 ......No it won't damage the raw steel, just don't put any aluminium parts in. It only lifts the rust from the metal leaving the pit marks or holes as they are.

  • Hi, When i remove the parts and jet wash them, do i spray the por15 straight after jetwashing while the panel is still wet? or do i jetwash then dry the parts then spray por15 and then jet wash the por15 off?

  • @mrcampers123 ...... First up I let the panels dry, then you can see how much flash rusting will occur. Once dry I then spay the Por 15 on . Depending on your weather you may not need to use Por 15. In a hot summers day once the panels have dried from washing them with water I have managed to paint the primer on the panels without the need for Por 15.

  • cooool

  • oh wrong type .........cheap as chip eh

  • por15 is a little expensive......do you use anything cheaper?

  • Could you explain in more detail how to prepare the Molasse solvent? My English is not good so I couldn't catch all words in video. Instread of using high pressure water, can you wash it with low pressure water? or rinse it?

  • DAMN DOES IS NICE WAY TO GET RID OF THEN CANCER

  • Great Thank you! and music don't get any better than that.

  • This looks like a nice technique that I would like to try. Are you using sulfured, unsulfured or blackstrap molasses? Thanks for sharing your videos with us it is much appreciated.

  • @endsophistry .... Blackstrap is the type I use. Cheers Dave

  • Where do buy Molassis at ?

  • @dvanderaa2011 ... You can purchase from a farmers produce store . Its used for horse feed. Cheers

  • How do you keep the solution from fermenting?

  • @icarusfx84 .... You won't stop it . I just scrape the crust off or push it aside when inserting a part.

  • These rust removal videos are fantastic. Thank you.

  • after you pull the rusted part out of the molasses how long do you recommend letting it sit before pressure washing it?

  • @Predator2169 .....Wash them immediately is what I do. I had the panels dry before and just prefer to remove whilst wet.

    Cheers Dave

  • Very neat method. This seems to be a good method for doing a lot at once especially if you had more than one dunker.

    Thanks from the USA!

  • How much molasses to water should i use? is molasses better than white vinegar?

  • @mrcampers123 .....! gallon of molassis to 6 - 9 gallons of water Because this can be diluted it will go further than the vinigar

  • Nice video.....

  • Or is it just simple chemistry and the oxidized metal is absorbing the molasses which in turn, loosens it from the underlying, stable metal. Then a bit of water pressure and it flakes away into the flow of water.

  • @CaseyMcLaughalot ..... I would prefer to know the rust has gone all together. Just from past experiences that's all.

  • Bullet holes at 0:58? hehe

  • This is an awesome video. I like how you took you time explaining details. I'm defiantly going to use this in the future.

    Thanks Alot.

  • Well push me over with a feather unbelievable .

  • I currently have parts soaking in a molasses bath that are ready to come out this week. I'm planning to use the Metal Ready product, as you've shown, and follow with an epoxy primer. What primer have you found that works best for use over the acid etched metal? Many of the brands I've reviewed, such as House of Kolor and SPI, do not recomend their product for acid washed metal. May I ask what primer you've been using? (Great Video!)

    Thanks,

    Lee

  • @Garand20 .... Thanks Lee, most paint companies won't recommend it due to the risk of a claim. As with all surfaces I sand down the surface completely before my final primers are added. Before any paints are applied I generally use a product called Deoxadine or Deoxit. This removes any finer rust that may have occured during idle times or humidity. Then as always I will apply with a rag, wax and grease remover then remove with a dry rag. This removes any finger prints etc.

  • your doing an awesome job. I mean this is a cash flow right in your garage. I will mark this for my next project.

  • Perhaps I am missing the most important piece of information. What is the recipe for the solution?

  • Hi, very interesting process, thanks for sharing, I learned something new.

Question, I don't have access to molasses, would a mix of water and sugar do the trick? What makes this process actually work?

  • Hello! First off, great video! Totally informative. I had a question regarding the viscosity of the molasses mixture. Would it be thin enough to be able to spray through maybe a garden sprayer? I was curious because if one could rig up maybe a kid's wading pool with this stuff with a pump going to a hose sprayer, you could rig up a tarp to catch spray off the bottom of a car and remove rust. I would only be concerned about the mixture hardening up and clogging the sprayer...

  • @tundrajt .... Hi and thanks for your comments. Yes it will be thin enough

to use a garden hose. It all depends on the mixture you make yourself.

Everything is worth a try so give it a go as I can't see why it won't work . Cheers

  • @Desertrodder How many gallons is in that pool that you have

  • @taylorb2053 .... The tank holds 2000 litres. (500 gallons) to the top. But I have used it at the half way mark before. Your choice what to use.

    Regards Dave

  • @Desertrodder . Great tip, great video. Did I missed it? What is the ratio water molasses ?

  • Im seriously considering doing this on an 82 Malibu fender. I was wondering, where this fender came from a junkyard, the inner fender has some thick rust on the joists, will this remove rust that thick?

  • @dethforme ....Sorry for the delay but to answer your question , Yes it will.

It will take longer but all you need to do is pull it out of the tank wash it off

to check the results and submerge in the tank again if needed for a further

week. You will see the results.

  • @Desertrodder Awesome man, thanks so much for the tip.

  • Could i use a cheap plastic swimming pool to put the Molassis in or will it eat the plastic? Also what effects do that stuff have on the enviroment, i dont want to be arrested for releasing toxins into the sore system.

    Thanks,

    86lt230

  • @86lt230 ....It won't hurt the plastic , though you don't want to get holes in it or you lose the solution. I empty my tank when finished onto the lawn in my back yard and dilute it with the sprinkler on. There will be no harm to the environment as this is a product that is fed to horses as a special treat. It is a bye product of the sugar cane.

It will produce a sweet smell which can be quite strong depending on the amount used, same as treacle as used in some cooking recipes :)

  • @Desertrodder How long do you leave the parts or in my case, all fenders, in the solution? Also could i put the trim in the Molassis, or will it ruin it; if so what do you recommend?

    Thanks,

    86lt230

  • @86lt230 ... Generally two weeks, if they are heavily rusted three will do it but I have

had no problems with two weeks. As for the trim if it is stainless no worries,

if not you will have to try the trims and check every day to see if the solution has

removed the rust stains. Just don't leave them for the two week period.

    Cheers :)

  • Hi what is the solution name that you put the car parts in?

  • @eugenerush7 .... The solution is called Molassis which is the syrup from sugar cane.

  • What is the zinc solution you use to prevent the rust from recurring? How do yo apply it? Is it readily available for home use? Is it available in the United States? (sorry for the fusilade of questions....)

  • @smallbee1234 ..... Yes it is made in the USA and is called Por 15 metal ready. You spray it on or

if you use gloves you can apply with a rag and wipe it on let settle for 10 -15 minutes and remove

with a damp or wet rag.

  • @smallbee1234 Thank you very much for the information! Greetings from America!

  • does this ruin a chrome finish?

  • @Asimo5001..... No it won't effect it at all. If there is surface rust with the chrome it will remove it.

    Regards Dave

  • Soaking is obviously better, but what if the floor pan or the boot floor has rust? Can I soak some bath towels with the solution, lay them on the boot floor and pour more solution over and keep wet for a week? Will this work or will the towels touching the rust affect the result?

  • @coolbluepontiac : Hi , I haven't tried this though I will give it a go as I can't see why it won't

work. Seeing the towel is material the solution will still be making contact. If you can plug up any rust holes with putty or silicon for the moment and just pour the solution in, as if it is a bath this will work but just remember to dilute it with water. You could do a stronger batch of 5 parts water to 1 part molassis so it works quicker.

    Regards

  • @coolbluepontiac they culter mollasis to mold for citric acids this is how this work,

  • @coolbluepontiac they culter mollasis for mold to make citric acids this is how this work, they make citric acid out of mold in molassis, why this would work good is the thinkness sticks longer

  • MOLASSES????????????????? what s that? so i just can remove rust if i live in USA or AUSTRALIA`?what the chemical correct name for that,to use here in my country that is imposbible to get simple baking soda

  • Excellent video, I'll be trying it out on my chevy, thank mate, very helpfull

  • Thank You very much!!! I was skeptical at first but after I washed it off I was in awe. You need a patent! ;-)

  • @Mr1955fordf100 .... Thanks for that, it's great to be able to use the old methods which just seem to be hidden through age.

    Regards Dave

  • Thanks for the help, I couldn't figure out how to keep the inside of the door from rusting again and the fish oil looks like it might just be the ticket.

  • Great video! one question though, If you dip a whole door to clean out the crud inside, is there a way to then flush it out and get the POR 15 inside to prevent flash rusting or is it best to strip off the door skin then dip it?

  • @MissRavensmiles ... I have had this same situation on doors I have done and have found that a product we call FISH OIL to which you can purchase from your local hardware store in a pressure pack can to which it has an extension hose to spray into these tight areas. This fish oil will creep into all cracks or joins and eventually dry. You may be able to spray this through the holes which could be from the door seals attaching points. Otherwise pour paint into the area with doors upside down.

  • @MissRavensmiles ... The old garden hose will even clean it out as long as you do have good water pressure. Then leave it to dry thoroughly before you attempt the above .

    Regards Dave Ailey

  • Thank you for posting this. You just made my life easier.

  • What is the ratio? Molasses to water galons

  • @heatherandpaul2 I have made my batches 9 parts of water to 1 part molassis, but if you want quicker results you can reduce the amount of water used. In other words 1 gallon of molassis to maybe 5 gallons of water. I generally purchase it in 5 gallon containers as its cheaper to do it this way. If you don't use it all then just keep it in the tightly sealed container out of the sun or feed it to some ones horse, they will love it.

    Regards: Dave Ailey

  • @Desertrodder Thanks Dave. This has helped me a whole bunch. Cheers

  • Great video! i had to sub! Also loved the country music!

  • Thank you very much for making these videos.

  • That's awesome! good job

  • @TNT66613 : Glad you like them, as this stuff really works. I will have more info coming soon.

  • hi man lovew the vid. i have a merc vito van and the sills are very bad also around the door handles. can you tell me how i dothis to the sills. like i really wana make a good job of it get the rust ince and then paint it. but i dont want the van to be out of action for any lentgh of time. also i have alloy wheels i notice you replyed to someone not on alloy would this damage my wheels.

  • also if you woudl like me to make a reply vid to show you the problem i am havingwith my wheels so perhaps maybee youcould tell me how to fix it. i would be so greatfull.

  • @bobski1976 - Hi Bob, if you can put the video of your wheels up I would love to give you my advice.

  • does it matter what kind of molasses you use, or is it a specific kind of molasses. like store bought?

  • @fpsnick94 Generally food grade is used, or the type farmers use or feed to horses

  • Cheers Mate, Tiro arriva Compa ! ! !, nice vid man !

  • hey

how can you do this to hole car if the parts cant be off

eg on the roof and body panels

  • hey

how can you do this to hole car if the parts cant be off

eg on the roof and body panels

  • @maymoon111 If you are talking about stainlesss trims these will not be harmed by the solution. Only alloy trims will be damaged. If they are trims , then they were at factory stage fitted to the car , so they should be able to be removed. If you can't remove them then cover them with a good coating of a heavy grease and seal the section so no solution will go behind the trim.

  • how could this work on a truck bed

and what do you fill the pitts and holes in withif you are restoring it to show room condition ive always wondered that

  • @bubbah12345 Yes you can do the truck bed. It will remove the rust down to the good metal which of course leave pit holes or craters just like the moon. If they are too severe then you can fill them with weld or for the minor ones , body filler will be fine

  • Thanks mate! Thats awesome i never knew this could be done, but it's definetely gonna save me time when i get around to restoring my old mans car. Cheers

  • can you do that with an engine without demaging it?

  • @4evasugarfree Yes you can . Just don't leave the pistons in or anything aluminum. This is organic, so it won't harm the metal in anyway.

  • Hi there… nice video. I’ve got a 1965 AJS motorbike petrol tank to clean… think I’ll try it this way…

    Cheers!

  • @JeremyPaulCarroll It will clean it well, just rinse it well and prep it straight away.

  • how much is a gallon?

  • @Chrisskateboarding It all depends on the supplier, where I get it from is the local farmers produce store and if I buy it in bulk ( 100 litres or 22 gallons) at a time I can pay $ 140.00. If I buy in smaller quantities they charge more .

  • Could you say one more time, what is there in the solution of the tank for rustremoving?

  • @IQenergy Hi it is called Molassis, derived from sugar cane in Australia

  • More people should know about this, I was amazed when I first learned of It.

Unsulfured has worked fine, for a small part I just tried, but I'm not sure if it is slower than sulfured or not?

    Anyway, nice clip, thanks mate!

  • Do you have any tips for doing the shell? I have an FJ that I would like to attempt this method with.

  • @mytunes1000 You can do a whole car not a problem, the only factor is the size of the tank. There is a place in Warrnambool Victoria and another in Mildura that have full tanks. Not sure of there solutions, but Iknow the one in Warrnambool is very similiar

  • @Desertrodder What about ants? I see on your video that it seems clean and ant free. I have quite a few around where I live. What do you do to stop them?

  • @mytunes1000 Well I haven't come across that problem but you could try hosing the area down well before you work on the parts or have the pest controller spray the area around the bath. Each state will have different ants and I suppose you would be talking about the small sugar ants. I haven't had any problems with bees as they are in my area or fly's. Let me know more on how you go.

  • awesome

  • Thanks Desertrodder

That was a great video , Could i ask is this technique only for the older Rod's or can you use this method for example on a XB coupe Doors and other panels ..

Thanks again that video was truly informative..

  • This method can be used for anything metal , just don't put aluminium into it or any of the side trims, they won't be there if you leave them in too long.

As for the doors it works great. On a door I did that was damaged up top I had to cut the damaged area out and repair before I welded it back and the metal was all nice and clean inside the channels. Sand blasting won't do that. If you can't find metal ready locally try deoxadine available at car paint supplies.

    Hope this helps.

    Dave

  • hello sir, could you tell me what is the brand name of the solution that you using to remove the rust on the métal and where do you find it?

  • There is no particular branding as you would expect, as it all comes from sugar cane farms. It is called food grade molassis available at most farmers produce stores. Farmers use it to feed cows , horses etc, it is as thick as hell so it takes a while to fill a container. I normally take 20 litre drums and leave it with them for the day. Just mix it with 9 parts water - 1 part molassis and mix it well, it will break down over night for you so you could mix it again the next day.

  • Great video. Good information. You've put this together well and I've found the info really useful. Thanks for the tip and keep em coming.
