They do not take air from the water, but rather puff up WITH water. Which is why a puffer should never be netted out of the water, as puffing out of water (thus puffing air) would be dangerous and possibly deadly. Air is much harder to blow out than water for them. Nice Mbu, just like my Arthur :)

Apparently some parts of the fish are poisonous. So if a predator is not put off by the shock of the sudden increase in size, and the puffer gets eaten, the predator also dies. Therefore relying on natural selection to make only the ones that don't eat puffers successful. It seems that the spines on the spiny puffer lie flat until it puffs up, but you can still see them easily.

According to Wikipedia, there are 121 different species, called variously, puffers, balloonfish, blowfish, bubblefish, globefish, swellfish, toadfish, and toadies. Thae one with spines is sometimes called the porcupine fish. Not sure if they're all poisonous to eat, but why would you eat something so cute?

Like puffer fish are the ones that are poisonous, without spines and the blow fish are not poisonous with spines. Atlest that's what I heard. not all scientists agree with that... there's too many species of pufferfish and some look very similar. Then again some scientist claim it's because of the fish's diet and just give them some non-poisonous food and it seems to work.

Best not to gamble with your life and eat fugu... Poor puffers being killed for that!
