Xena was also the first main female superhero in the LEAD. Before her it was unthinkable that a show could be succesful with a female in the lead. She is freedom in many ways. Buffy for one example have been very inspired by Xena. And Xena DID have gay subtext. The subtext made it beautiful. homosexuality is not filthy. Xena showed that. real love between her and gabrielle

@basiacomeout if they had come out with homosexuality in the 90's in a daytime show they had been forced to shut it down. homosexuality was not completely accepted back then. and I'm glad they did not do it so that the series continued.

I bought season 1 DVDs yesterday and well, yes it was quite obvious already from the start. There are limits to friendship and these two characters were of chart on that. AND I still don't understand why Xena would bother take Gabrielle on her journey if she wasn't... Totally Bi ! But after the L word phenomenon, it all looks very ''shy/taboo/frustrating''. The producers are to blame, I think ! No guts !
