i don´t want to be a besserwisser but he broke it at 5:09 to be ecxact -one second after that he throws one more straight right, feels the pain and throws only hooks to the head for the rest of the fight. they discuss in "12 greatest rounds in history" here on utube.Of course this round is voted the greatest....
Awsome, jawdropping boxing action from a CLASSIC era, you have to love those guys, plus leonard and duran they were all up there. Hearns is my personal favorite due to his explosive, scything style he really is a force of nature, it's beautiful to watch devastating to be against too...
dude, hearns didn't knock hagler out coz he never was going to knock him out. no way tommy could cope with the combination of skills, strength and aggression of marvin.
Thats right tHaglers v hearns was the best first round ever i will not argue with that, hearns could not take the power of a pure born middleweight fighting out of brockton masssuchusettes
Nigel benn was devastating 1 punch middleweight,if nigel benn had fighted hagler it would of been an 8 round war with the referre stopping the fight and lifting Marvelous Marvin Haglers arm in victory
this fight is on my dvd boxing,i watch it all the time, but i watch the gatti v ward as well what do you think, hagler won the leonard fight in 1987,hagler is the king
Hearns won the first part of the round, hurting Hagler and landing a ton of shots. Hagler took control the second part of the round when he got Tommy on the ropes and went to work on him.
Greatest First round EVER. Too bad boxing is now dead, and unless the Klitchko brothers fight, we will not see a golden era of boxing for a long long time.
Hm, I watched it again and thought Haglar won this time, lol. The whole concept of Judging is kind of silly anyhow, it's pretty much a job anyone could do. No way to goof it up really, it's all opinion.
I would give that rd to Hearns. Sure Haglar was pressing the action and was in his face more, but Hearns landed the bigger blows. But I guess it didn't really matter, not much likelyhood of a decision.
Great round, but calling it the best ever in championship history is short-sighted. How about the first round of Dempsey-Firpo in 1923 that featured nine knockdowns? How about the first round of the lightweight fight between Leonard and Mitchell in 1921 when the challenger was decked three times and then rose to deck the invincible Benny Leonard?
I'm sorry, did you see these fights in person? lol. A first round with nine knockdowns is a disgrace. Fighters get paid to stand on their feet and fight. And besides, Dempsey had seven of the nine KD's. The Benny Leonard fight was a great "upset" but not a great fight. It's a 20's version of Corrales-Castillo, which WAS a great "fight."
Yeah, I saw them both. I'll be 117 years old next month! Seriously though, say what you like about the Dempsey-Firpo fight, but in 1950 it was voted by sports journalists as the most exciting sports event of the first half of the twentieth century. Would you have gotten up in the middle of the first round to get a beer?
I already am. I've written three books on baseball history and I used to write a sports history column for a local newspaper. Boxing was a favorite topic of mine. Good luck to you.
Easily the best round of boxing in any championship title bout ever...when the round was over, everyone that was watching on the cable tv (family, friends, Me) screamed at the action that actually lived up to the hype, and more!

I'm with ya', Mark. Will I ever see another fighter I like as well as the Hit Man? Not at all sure that I will.
Also, throw in the names of Wilfred Benitez and Iran Barkley to that wonderful list of the 80's middleweight era. Incredible line-up; a golden age.

You can't pick a winner as a judge for that first round. It's 10 point must, so both guys get 10. Why not?

The first commenter here claimed it was easily the best round in any championshiop fight. That's whom I was responding to.
