@mebtoe1 boring, badly written or ugly never equals simple or catchy in my book. Obviously, this music has its fans - just like racism does "grab some people" while being disgusting for most of us :-)
bersa 888- it may be boring but it does grab you. the star spangled banner is a boring song but it inspires and leads us to a higher plane of emotion- insipid and simple though it may be.
complexity of notes, attention to style purity, and perhaps in this case a better variety of instruments would satisfy the classical musician but would leave us common men adrift waiting for an earth pounding viola or timpanic drum to wake us up.
If you are going to write honest, genuine baroque-style music (not "baroque inspired", pastiches, parodies, transcriptions, etc.) you should try to write GOOD music, not eminently boring stuff, which utilizes every single stereotype of the genre - or use real music from that period. This is a boring, insipid and, frankly, embarrassingly infantile composition. Only after hearing the real thing (Bach, Vivaldi, Corelli, Handel, Scarlatti etc.) will someone realized how truly crappy this music is...
if violas aren't good, others could have just played without them. but look, every orchestra has them and quartets won't be complete without violas..=)
I can play this song on violin! Guess WHAT? I have Agentleader1 account on YouTube! Also to prove that I have the music, the music contains a solo part also with a "The Coda", there is no violin 3. In part of the song, the violas spiccato! There are sixteenths triplets in this song. Etc.
The first minute of this would be great for a battle scene in a movie. The wind blowing the hair of the main charactrers, the long grasses swaying in the breeze, the tension in the muscles, the bloos rushing through your veins... that kind of stuff. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL COMPOSITION!
I really want to meet/learn from Karl Jenkins. I love the chords, and contrary motion in this song.
Every time I hear this song, as I do with a few other songs, I kind of drift off and stare at something and imagine the music rolling out in the form of sheet music in my head (not the pitches, generally the form/shape of it) - similar to panorama view in Sibelius... its hard to explain.
I once asked a violist why she chose the viola over a violin or a cello. Stupid question, really, I realize in retrospect. She didn't even blink an eye (obviously she had been asked this question before) She said, "I love the violin, but when I play the viola, it vibrates through my whole body." Pretty good description, I'd say. Imagine all the great pieces of the world without the viola lines! Impossible boring!
To me, it sounds like a cross between Vivaldi and Tchaikovsky, though a little more Vivaldi than Tchaikovsky. I'm not bashing this song. I love it. This is the first time I've heard the entire song as I've only heard the 30 second commercial version of it before tonight.
butterfly effect fibonacci and fractals on the cover plus epic music, hit me with some theoretical physics head explodes, this must be stephen hawking's breakfast
@hjones1, While there may be some similarities to small portions of Vivaldi's 4 seasons, the piece really isn't a rip off, as it is quite a bit different overall (and very well done).
I agree with Igneous01, it's the same with bass. I play second violin, and I find that if you take out any section of the orchestra, the piece feels empty.
Wow... haven't heard this piece in years: I remember this from the DeBeers diamond commercials back in... the late eighties/early nineties(?), but I didn't hear the full version till more recently (though to me, it always sounded like the music for a BBC costume drama)... Always sends chills of delight up my spine! Thanks for sharing this awesome piece!
i find violas an important instrument in every orchestra, sure there the backup and play the supporting melody, but without them the piece begins to feel empty. i know its fun to play the exciting parts and all, but without those suddle parts that the violas play it wouldn't sound as great as it does with them
@dvdai14 The tempo is different in fact it sounds 20 times better as if the one in the video wasn't good at all changing the tempo just made this the most overplayed song in my ipod and I say that with gusto!
this piece is so great and rounded, the strings make it what it is. all the piano solos i've heard are lacking unless they have strings behind them. this is definitely a piece with a gorgeous composition and the sound is not as full on a piano.
Well, I'll personally say that the violas are excellent and are often underrated in pieces such as these...We're like the guy who always perform as the mediator and keep things flowing...And no one notices until he's not there anymore...:)
Violins are like the white rice of music - they sound great, you can use as many as you want, and they go well with just about anything. I think this song is great with the stringed instruments!
I playing this tomorrow night at my high school. The eighth graders got put together with the 9-12 and they're AMAZING! I find the viola part quite boring
im not surprised; we violas are too often merely barely heard supporting parts rather than getting important and fun parts. but have fun with playing it and enjoy at least playing the piece.
@Gawaine687 You have to think of violas as salt in bread, you don't taste that either, but when it isn't there, it tastes like shit: same with an orchestra :-p
@Goliath131 having played a viola for many years in an orchestra, i know what you mean. and i think your comparison is a good one. however, the difference between having and not having salt is a small one, and i hate being allocated to a small role with some of the more boring parts of a piece. its easier than violin parts, but at least they get the melodies more often.
@Gawaine687 In our chamber orchestra, there was one person who made all-state this year....and she was a violist. She is by far the best player in our orchestra, and the solos she played were crazier than crazy...
@Gawaine687 yea, i think so too. i'm a violin player, too. of course, like vivaldi's spring (if im not mistaken) and many more songs have solo parts of violin which are perfect, but we need more songs with violin actions.. :D if you know what i mean
@Goliath131 I play bass guitar, and that's exactly what I love about it; few people notice it when it's there...but when it's gone, everyone notices it :)
if a world war 2 spy movie was made, this track is the perfect opening music! one thinks of dark misty Vienna streets and whispers on the ominous wind.
yeah, thats kinda what its like with us violisits. we get repeated notes or rhythms sometimes and rarely get the main themes or the fun stuff like you violins do.

I wasn't surprised that we didn't get much love in this song... And to be honest, I would have thought so.
It's true. The viola doesn't get that much love in most pieces...
I wish we were noticed a little more so we would be so stereotypically underrated.
