  • no the people that disliked it thought yeah the dude knows his notes but it sounds like a dying elephant. very annoying

  • I could tell it was a 6-day cram-performance. I suppose you held up pretty well. I mean, I had only 3 days to prepare it, among other rep. Keep working on it and you'll get it down eventually!

  • 20 persons thought the dislike-button was a way to buy his CD...

  • @Nooooomie lol check out his newer stuff. heres a link to his channel, hes gotten even better lol. his user name on here is aTomaCat.

  • durp

  • Ever watched 'catch me if you can' the score is very similar.

  • Not a flawless performance but a billion times better than I could do in 6 days (I would even be proud of that after months of practice)

  • needs work

  • SPLENDID JOB!

  • So.... The Beatles have a saxophone section now?

  • Why only 6 days? I believe it though based off of this poor performance.

  • @joesmitty45

that is extremely arrogant, considering his age, the time he had and just how difficult the piece he played is

I doubt that you could do the same, being a person who'd join youtube to insult other musicians' performances

that is if you even are a musician

  • @joesmitty45 Let us see you do better???

  • @Saxkiwi Go check out his channel and you will. his user name is aTomaCat.

  • learning the piece in 6 days is pretty impressive, but i can't imagine the circumstances under which one would have to do that :p i would recommended taking your time and learning pieces at a slower tempo at first lol

  • very nice, but not improve, not that i dont think he could, btw EXCELLENT vibrato sounds good

  • hahaha, man he takes himself way to seriously haha, his music is such a joke, listen to it hahaha.

  • @horbergaren Like to see you try and play as good as he does. This is a great performance of classical.

  • @Saxkiwi classic, i do not judge artists compared to my own ability, i compare them to other artists, i hear this and it sound like random notes

  • THIS DUDE IS A BEAST!!!!!!!! I JOINED JUST TO COMMENT!!!!!!!!

    beastly

  • Not so good as you stated

  • he's not freaking awesome

  • com técnica, sem musicalidade, e ainda borra o grave

  • I know 3 people who can improv better than that. 1 being my saxophone tutor, the other 2 being his star pupils.

  • That's not a improve dumb ass.

  • As in their improv, is better than this performance.

  • You have good technique. Artificial vibrato. Sometimes your tongueing is a little harsh. Your high notes sound thin. I think you might be biting a bit.

Where is your PHRASING???? This piece isn't PLAY FAST AS YOU CAN... its all about the phrasing - it's a beautiful dance.

  • Good performance, and technically sound. However, this is, in my opinion, a dangerous thing. People come to YouTube looking for inspiration. What we need these days are tasteful, passionate, and thought-provoking musical performances, and less of technical "cage-master" showmanships. Without these elements, one could simply plug the notes into a computer and play it back, or better yet, construct a robot and put THAT on the stage. It'll play the notes perfectly and without ANY time to work.

  • @GeneralDAS Okay, okay Bradbury, we get it. Just kidding. I agree.

  • @GeneralDAS Listen to mule or pittel play it. The emotion and musicality is much more prevalent. What makes this piece so difficult is not the technicality, but rather being able to fit your own personality into the piece when it is moving so fast.

  • I understand that it was worked on for 6 days, it was decent considering those circumstances. It wasn't AMAZING to any extent. It really doesn't matter how long it takes to perfect it, but what it sounds like as "perfected" (if that made sense). This piece is way more than just a technical challenge (and even then, it wasn't executed greatly). There may be a bunch of notes, but that doesn't mean play them fast and loud all the time. On a brighter note (no pun intended), nice tone!

  • Sax989, who are you to critique this guys performance when you cant even spell practice. You need to learn how to spell first.

  • @ecyber2cool

that is how you spell practice in everywhere but the United States Xp

  • Um, excuse me. Who are you to critique his spelling when are incapable of even using proper grammar yourself. Hypocrite.

  • very nice. Your tone on you mid to high range notes is very impressive how you can hold a steady note and still utalize fast flowing air to maintain a pitch; like wise you scaleing is good, but a little to slurred if you can uderstand what i am saying

although faster may sound cooler and make an impressive boast ... make sure that the songs feeling, via every notes buitifull sound, comes through.

ps: work on you long tones, you lower notes are lacking the full potiential i can tell you posses.

  • very nice.. especially for a HS player.. remember though, with Music comes speed... but not always the same way around.. relax, the beauty of a piece such as this is that is it so open to interpretation by the player with regards to tempo, pace, and & phrasing..

  • amen to that!!

its clear hes got the technique but the musicality is lacking

  • Nice sound but you have to practise more..you can't master that kind of song in 6 days even if you are supersaxman..I hope you heard that you have made a lot of mistakes..you can do better I'm shure because you are talented..you just need to practise more ;)

  • How much you wanna bet that have the dumb bitches complaining about the way he plays don't even play the sax. LMAO

  • that was amazing. egnore all the h8ers who think your crap cus i play alto sax and those scales were excellent.

These people are all jelous of you so they comment on u negativly to raise their self esteem. good freekin job

p.s. god these people. they think they are hidden behind a freeking cumputer screen. u may just think its letters on a screen but to him its peoples opinions. Think would you go up to him and say this was terrible...

hope u are all very happy with your self

  • @Anthonyb074 I hope you receive an education.

  • @Gamertech123 holy crap did he. check out his channel. his user name is aTomaCat.

  • i love the sound of your sax..

    nice playing too..

  • ok first of all, he sucks playnig this, if he had only 6 days to study or not I don't care, if a piece is not ready than he shouldnt present it saxkid75 is right

ALSO DON'T CALL SONGS TO PIECES!!!!! SONG IS SOMETHING LIKE A LULLABY, YOU'RE MUSICIANS ( or you try to) NOT BARDS!

  • Everyone, the kid did a wonderful job. It wasn't perfect, but I bet none of you all could play better than him. So stop posting such negative comments, as if you are a good judge of things. Great job mattrlockwood!

  • Idk why I watch some of these sax vids lol, they always dissapoint unless they are pro. Im not that good and I feel I could play better! Thing I hate is just the overall tone, tounging, the way it is played does absolutely nothing for me.

  • This one's painful to watch compared to the video response....

  • Sloppy. I hate it when people think it's OK to be sloppy because they've only worked on a piece for "6 days." The fact that he has chops and could probably play it flawlessly if he put in the proper amount of work makes this performance even more disappointing.

  • agreed

  • Oh, will you shut up about the mouthpieces? He can play metal on a soprano in concert band for all I care, as long as he sounds good (and he does!). Every one of them is made differently, and will work differently for everyone. Oh, and tell Tommy I'm using this recording to decide if I'm doing this piece on my senior BM degree recital (I am), he's wicked!

  • Give him an advice to buy Vandoren A27

  • It IS NOT very hard.If you think thats is sick hard to play, try to play Variations Pathetiques by Ida Gotkovsky or Fuzzy bird sonate.I mastered caprice and i'm now practising variations-this is a real killer.Caprice is very musical difficult, not technical-a great piece for concert. And,i mastered it in age 15.I m not joking- I'm 15 years old...

  • anyone can play fast.

    he's just practiced his scales.

this is a decent saxophonist running his hands up and down his horn.

where's the soul, the passion, the music?

    1-10

    3

  • Dude, let's see YOUR rendition of it! This piece is the hardest thing I've EVER tried to play! My sax teacher gave it to me. If you think a "decent" saxophonist could play this, you are a FOOL. I do agree with some of the other comments on too fast. There are mistakes because he thinks it's gotta be so fast.

  • really?

thats sad, if this is the hardest piece you've ever tried to play.

    it's not hard.

    1) its just scales and arpeggios.

    2) its the exact same dynamic the entire time.

    3) his phrasing makes me want to seal off my ears.

    4) his set up is wack.

    5) fast, fast, faster, faster, fastest. No constituency.

    6) shut the hell up, LH you must suck.

  • saxykid is ttttttttoooooooooooooooo right lol

  • I know you practised it very short, howewer.Dont' understant me bad-you are very good saxophone player(sorry for my english)

  • Awesome performance? There is a lot of mistakes, and it's too mechanical, fast and without passion.I play it,slower and more precise. You should take care of "music" in this piece.

  • OK really amazing. Really it's not bad. However, in this case the young musician certainly is aspiring. From a trained ear who knows this piece, there are certainly some rough spots although to the average listener, it is all good. Keep working on tone, accuracy especially in the more technical sections where "blips" are noticed and try to make it all more delicate and fluid ( even when you rit.). All in all, good job but not the end of your work.

  • all i have to say is wow. ive taken looks at this piece and gotten nowhere. props to ya man

  • mmmm pretty good , but you could clean up that improp.

  • Awsome preformance is a serious overstatment.... not bad at all afcourse, but not enough attention to the little details...

  • Agreed

  • agreed

  • Nice. I played this my senior year for Texas State Solo & Ensemble and various collegiate auditions. However, I did it on Bari and by memory.

A little different from this guy, especially in keeping with with waltz groove at 2:38...but the openness for interpretation is what makes these unaccompanied solos so great. I recommend them to anyone who plays sax and wants some creative liberty in their solo.

I wasn't quite as good as him, though...great work and sweet tone!

  • ....nice tone. You really shouldn't be playing a piece if you've only had it six days. You could have given this piece justice had the runs been a little cleaner. I sure you are an excellent musician ... very nice tone.

  • LOL

    I agree!

It was a hard piece especially with having to jump up and down and the fast scalewise motion.

  • i play the saxophone too except not as well

  • pretty nice. go slower the notes aren't all coming out it kinda just sounds like your glissing up. but good for only 6 days

  • i played stuff like that in middle school! ^_^

i loveeee saxophone. i march for an NFL foodball team :P

  • foodball? any way, good for you.

  • Unbelievable , I've been playing for three years and can't get close to this.

  • lol he's probably been playing for more but he's only had the PIECE for 6 days. not sure if you noticed lol.

  • what kind of mouthpiece is that? i use a meyer 2nd

  • A Meyer for concerto stuff like that? For ANYTHING that deals with concert band, or blending with a concert ensemble, I stick to Selmer Paris C*. Meyer is a Jazz mouthpiece

  • He is using meyer mouthpiece!?

  • Nooo, not him. Another guy that I replied to that commented, haha. A Meyer is DEFINITELY not acceptable for this piece, hahaha

  • Hey folks, we posted some more of Matt's fine videos of my sax performances on the aTomaCat channel. Please come see me play when I've had a chance to work on things for a few months! Charlene, my accompanist, couldn't make this honor review, so I just had 6 days to come up with something solo. Yes, I do play jazz too (love it!) so if I can get vids converted to a uploadable format, I'll post that too. Thanks for listening! - Thomas Giles (aka aTomaCat - yes, I play Les Claypool on bass too)

  • fast fast fast fast fast fast fasterrrrr... man it´s better more slow and perfect... wll you will learn musicallity is good thing not only speed...watheber... good job keep on working...

  • agreed. It's pretty typical at that age though to try master high speed pieces.

As a listener those runs might have been nice included in an actual piece of music, but listening to 4:30 of what is basically a bunch of embellishment shoved together...ick.

But I guess if someone will compose a piece like that, then someone will play it. :/

  • How old is this kid?

  • He is 17...

  • Where did the music come from?

    I can't find it!

  • Wait...I found it.

You have a nice full tone...

    And what dexterity!

  • Yes that is truly excellent if the part about the 6 days is true, but it's still by no means a polished performance.

I mean yes, he's playing it better than I would get it if I worked on it for 12 months, but I wouldn't call it "FREAKING AWESOME!!!"

    Yes, still very impressive though.

  • Six days makes it freaking awesome....

  • wow, im impressed. that tone sounds really nice! keep it up!

  • Yes. I hope to play this soon. Right now I'm working on other music.

  • where's the beat?

jk, it was outstandingly awesome. great fingerwork. and tone. and trills, and everything else

  • the guy can obviously play, how bout taking away some tradition though...let go of the mundane backdrop, the uptight clothes even the stand.....throw some soul into a soulful performance, entertaining to hear but its lost in the boredom of the surroundings. Hope these words dont fall on deaf ears (woot pun)

  • Excellent performance. I find the "6 days" part hard to swallow though.

  • if you knew tommy you wouldnt find it that hard. but ive had it verified from his mother, father, sister, and his brother. but youre entitled to your thoughts.

  • yeahhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!! :D:D:D
