  • Need a world class logo done inexpensively? We can help! logo-now dot com

  • Don't do tutorials when you dont know what you are doing.

  • this video showed a10 trends that will define logo design In 2008.

  • this video is ultimately designed.

  • it is is a very interesting article.

  • Good Try

  • I'm motivated now to use blender for my own company logo... already have some shape in mind. You're great!! Thanx Linux for this software.

  • Hey Man, Wondering if you could make me a rough copy of a logo for my team, Voltage Gaming? if so please message me

    Cheers,

  • ok so your logo is a jpeg? how is that beneficial for printing different sizes?

  • I'm sorry dude but I got to say this: DON'T do logos for anyone. You use the wrong tools and make to complex patterns. The leefs will look like crap on a business card or other small spaces. You talk about using the programs to give you more opportunites, well, you should use a vector based program like Adobe Illustrator, that gives you all the opportunities in the world.

  • Very nice!

Anyone looking for coupons for high quality logo designs? I have a few coupon codes on my channel from big logo design companies. You can try some w/out breaking the bank! ;-)

    Von

  • @vongoth01 "big" logo design companies don't do coupons. Either you get is what you paid for or you get some cheap crap done for $50 and your competitor will have the same logo from the same company. I had a good laugh when I saw 2 local companies using the same "logo".

  • lol he called it graphics design

  • Who would use Blender and Gimp for this? Really?....

    Wow. Just wow....

  • Nicely presented..

  • THIS GUYS ATTITUDE IS TOTALLY CORRECT DO NOT START THINKING THAT THERE IS ONE IDEAL SOFTWARE PACKAGE FOR EVERYTHING OTHERWISE YOU WILL BECOME INFLEXIBLE AND GET LEFT BEHIND BY OTHER DEVELOPMENTS.

in other words there's more than one way to skin a cat.

  • I think this is retarded.... actually I'm sure....Wtf? Please someone explain to me WTF?! This is how not to work... Please, I want to know, after the sketch was scanned, why it wasn't traced in Illustrator or something else with vector? Why? WTF? It's wrong to use Blender or what was that... it's inappropriate...

  • garbage.

  • haters you all need to lighten up you sound retarded

  • Please don't call yourself a logo designer or Graphic Designer if you didn't go into it professionally or have a degree in it. I hate how everyone thinks they are a graphic designer because they have Microsoft Word, clipart and some templates.

Please DO NOT use the programs he used here. Invest in the Adobe Creative Suite.

  • great video. well done. I'm sure it looked great when you were done.

  • great video. well done.

  • The only way to get this video off YouTube is to flag it ... the dork that made this video is probably laughing at all the hits he is getting with this video ... we should kick his ass.

  • ugly ass logo, sorry my friend...

  • sketching is gooood,if you dont know why - you dont need to know

the final lines are ugly, the software is not suitable and time consuming,

very bad logo - and the font you used shows that you have no idea what design is

  • whaaaaah? why give up photoshop and illustrator for that software?!

  • Get this rubbish off the internet. I sorry but anyone who says they are a graphic's designer needs to go get an education. It is GRAPHIC Designer not graphic's designer... what an absolute retard!

  • don't ever bother with sketching a logo before hand..this is just plain stupid

  • @chiccosanchez The majority of professional logo designers sketch out concepts beforehand. "Brain to hand offers the path of least resistance".

  • @webcoredesign sure they used to sketch concepts...like 5 years ago. If you have a tablet there is no need for preliminary sketches. You can just begin drawing on illustrator and edit it as you go along

  • @chiccosanchez No. Logo designers use pencil and paper to sketch today and I've given one of the reasons why. Graphics tablets have been out for decades. Nothing substantial has changed in the logo design process over the years apart from design trend itself. Sketches are shown to clients as well as computer mockups and the sketch represents an important part of the brainstorming process and sometimes it's done without a computer in sight. A creative team might even work with a whiteboard..

  • to creating the logo is simply super ... Its a good job...

  • "Ahhh logo design"

"I don't really have stuff to say about logo design, but I have a short story to tell about it..."

cbs8 ... for the last time ... change the title of your video, and grow some real chin pubes while you're at it.

  • cbs8 you moron ... change the title of your video ... this is NOT logo design.

  • Hahah that's my scanner. I got it for free from a girl scouts sale!!! Lol. One of my first logo's was made in Ps. I didn't know about Ai...

...it blew my video card :'(. Because I made it 1.5 meters long... Hahaha. So yeah, use Vector people!

  • first step is research (thats what i like to do)

  • 29 main st chester ny

  • PLZ can somone make me a logo PLZ i will sub and rate

  • It's nicely presented...

  • Free software :)

  • crap process and crap logo. seriously, don't be a logo designer if you aren't using vector software. Your software is very restrictive and not designed for logos.

  • logo design with 3d software...?! AHAHAHA

  • A for effort on making a vid, it was pretty well produced (the video). But you opened yourself up to flaming of the entire universe with some of those claims and admitting that you use a 3D app to output to raster, then edit it in Gimp... wow. can't defend you there bro.

  • lol

    this guy cant draw

  • Please do not listen to this....he has no idea what he's talking about.

  • Why you not use Illustrator, and instead work in 3d program?

  • its called Logo Design thats why it comes up first when typing logo design

    5/5 for video

    nice drawing :D

  • What programs are you using?

  • As a graphics designer student my warning signals appeared when I hear the name Gimp and anything pixel based in the same sentence as logo. Vector, vector, vector. This is mentioned again and again in the comments, but cannot be said enough.

I liked the sketching part of the video a bit though, as that in correlation to talking back and forth with the client and analysing the targetgroup and values of the firm is the real strenght of a logo.

  • eww

  • This video is STILL the top youtube hit when someone types in "logo design"

    Why?

If cbs8 had a shred of integrity, he'd take this video down.

  • changed from photoshop to gimp... o.O!!!!!

  • Це показано як не треба робити.

  • the sketch process makes the logo succesful or not.

  • You're Mr. Popular on YayHooray!

  • ...

  • Thanks for the tutorial... but this logo is rather hideous!

  • if you cannot see this chappie is just demonstrating - and very effectively the I suggest - GO KILL UR SELF.

Jeez.... in 4 mins from sketch to logo - what do you want?

  • Sorry dude but that logo is HORRIBLE. Please choose another profession.

  • Hello my name is Franco

I have an account called GILBERTandFRANCO with 600+ subs. I was really hopeing you could make me an intro to use in my videos. the one i use is not so great. I think you will do a better job.

If you do want to please do this:

    -under 10 sec

-have it say "GILBERTandFRANCO" (custom logo would be amazing)

-upload it as a video response to my video"Story 9: Solo"

  • nice

  • calm down guys, he was just explaining the steps of graphics design, using multiple programs etc. He decided to use open source programs because not many people can pay for expensive programs. Now, I have Photoshop and blender. Photoshop is the best image editing program by far. And many people who do 3d crap know about Blender 3d BECAUSE IT IS OPEN-SOURCE. We are familiar with OPEN SOURCE PROGRAMS. Obviosly it doesn't come out the greatest, but we are familiar with it...... give him a break....

  • if you cant see whats wrong with this logo then you are in the wrong business. please cut your losses and enter a different profession, preferably not a creative one. really really terrible

  • Um.... logos should always be vector not raster. An a pro would use Illustrator... not to mention it all morphs in our minds and later onto many sketches and then when almost done into digital... not digital and a million versions of digital later a final... geez.

  • Yes, they SHOULD always be vector... this is how we professionals work. The only time you should be hitting Photoshop is to work on photographs or other images/illustrations. Logos, work that SHOULD be given to the client, needs to be in vector format because this IS the industry standard.

This isn't a hobby job, this is pro work with industry standards.

  • amen :)

  • exactly, well said. A graphic designer that gives a client or employer a logo in raster format... isn't a graphic designer. It's like a contractor using balsa wood to build a house.

  • Vector will allow you unlimited capabilities for enlargement/decrease as far as sizing goes. If you have a logo that is composed of an images/photo it can be vectorized. One of the best places on the internet to have a current logo updated or vectorized is mylogos4less - they charge a very reasonable price and are unbelievably fast!

  • @rebelliouschic Couldn't agree more. No matter what people say Vector is the only way to do a logo UNLESS they know that logo is specifically being used for the web which would be a really pointless logo. We aren't saying limit your self to one software we are saying the industry standard for logo design should be completely vectorized for limitless scaling of the image. A logo is made to go on many different form factors and must be versatile all around for printers to work with at all sizes.

  • He said "I used to use Photoshop all the way and now I use GIMP"? Ok, Granted, Gimp isn't a bad application for something that is open source, BUT no designer in the world would go from Photoshop to Gimp freely. Come on now.

  • Thats a whole lot of fucking awful right there.

  • Is this satire? I've designed logo's by p*ssing against a wall with more worth and accuracy than this guys! Go back to school buddy!

  • Dear God... who made the amateur think he knows anything about how actual designers work?

Blender? A logo made in an app like BLENDER?

  • wow.

    go back to school dude.

  • This was the worst design I've ever seen in my life.

  • LOL these programs are not the ones you should be using to create logos. Look for Adobe Illustrator for vector based drawing and for Adobe Photoshop for raster based drawing. That sketch redraw would have taken a max of 7 minutes in Adobe Illustrator.

  • I wanna see the final logo!

  • me 2

  • blender hasnt been used in any motion pictutres. wow. lightwave, and 3ds max are the industry leaders.

  • Yeah! Open Source ftw!

  • learn paths goddamn

"hey it really easy after i fuck around for a while and because i don't know what I am doing, it looks cool right? I mean you know what I'm talking about right? but anyways it makes this cool shape that looks nothing like the original concept because .. well its just an interesting process and i enjoy bringing this clusterfuck into the real world."

  • You need some more haters. lol

  • I think thats really interesting! Cute =] x

  • I would like a logo for my business...what do you charge?

  • i can make logos

  • What do you charge?

  • 25$ i usully charge 250 on real life

  • hey one question.. what was the thing u put ur pic on and it showed up on ur computer!?

  • lol a scanner

  • Lmfao...

  • omfg

  • Don't listen to them. It's a teleporter. All good computer shops sell them. Just make sure you get the one with the "return teleport" feature, otherwise you won't get your drawing back.

  • I've never heard of "Blender" but if the end result isn't vector then it's not appropriate for a logo. The reason one designs a logo in Illustrator is so it can be enlarged or reduced without losing sharpness. No pixelation. In the end you can never know how a logo will need to be reproduced, business card to billboard. It needs to work for all mediums across the board. That's why Illustrator is used for logos. Forget Photoshop. Misguided.

  • Blender is a free 3D modeling program, similar to Milkshape or 3ds max. Its very, very good for a free program.

  • so chill it out dude rater images are alright if you design them the size you print and actually digital lithograpic printing doesnt use either it has its own maths go to my channel theres a whole video on stuff like that

  • This is the way to loose money.Lack of understanding to use the right programs. A professional logo should be done within 1 day.

THe programs to work with: Illustrator, Xara 3D, Photoshop.

  • I'd like to see these logos you do in a day. Do you have a link?

  • the basic logo can be done in a day, whole manual, distances, typographic solution etc is almost impossible to do in 1 day.

  • i agree with orcusdei is impossible to make a really good logo in one day.....i think most of the "designers wannabes" think a logo it's just a an icon and some text.....but there's a lot more to it

  • Thoes programs are a waste!

    and one word...

    VECTOR!

  • i always use blender woo!

  • Cool

Tell me what you think of my logo designs

Type in "m.ricedesigns" just uploaded it today

    Cool

  • is illustrator 4 free?

  • no!

  • This is HACK. Scanning your sketches is great, as is the whole sketching process... but jeez, use illustrator. When I saw the .jpg format I died a little inside. Vector, man...vector.

  • Ur a fool!...

    and illustrator is amazing..

and if ur going to make a point, make sure u know what it is ur talking about.

  • do i smell a competition coming on?

trust me i know what im talking about.

illustrator is ok, but i prefer powerpoint and make things 99% better than most REAL Graphic designers do on illustrator.

  • ok, you guys: illustrator is good for polygons, vectors, and text, but of course it has limits. Photoshop is great for blending and illustrating (especially with more texture), but it too has limits, like lack of sharpness for text. THIS program he's showing us has its limits too. Buuut...I've never seen this before and am glad he took the time to show it.

  • the 3d logo design program

  • whats the name of this programm?

  • he said symbology. and im an expert in neameology.

  • Hi. my comment was not negative Suicidemayhem, i was just asking him to use the right software.

    Regards.

  • i dont think i was writing to you, i cant remember now, youtube didn't post it as a reply. i think it was to SerbianRenegade anyway. sorry for confusion.

  • OMG, use Adobe Illustrator man!

  • to each his own jackass. where's your work?

  • You suck in logo design get over it

  • I love your explanation of this creative process.. very beautiful... thanks

  • gimp. THE lamest piece of software in the world. don't make me laugh.

  • Hey Chris, AWESOME video. I'm glad someone has the skill to show the PROCESS of designing a logo from scratch AND can actually talk through the process. My clients love my work, but think I just pull my ideas out of the air. "Um, that one logo took me a week and 30 sample logo to get it correct." Thanks man! Keep up the good work!

  • that was the worst logo/logo creative process I have ever seen. you fail, sir. go back to the art institute.

  • thanks

  • Damn, he's fine!

  • Your exactly right, logos take time, effort, input, creativity, etc... That's why it hacks me that every 18 year old with a copy of photoshop starts his own logo design business and floods the market with sub-par work.

Check out my logo reel off my channel. I'm adding more weekly.

  • Logos take WEEKS sometimes MONTHS to produce. They need to last years (maybe centuries if the business is really successful)

Taking the time to understand the audience is imperative, and finding a way to stand out to them is crucial. This entails writing a "creative brief".

Most logos start with many more than one draft, when I start a branding project, we start with at least 10 - maybe even upto 30 designs if I feel extra creative.

  • as for this movie itself it's not very good and the logo is not very good either. furthermore the whole thing could have been simplified by just using a vector to raster program which would have saved a hell of a lot of work.

  • thnx for the vid

  • I hope you're not selling these services. The only correct thing you've done is the sketch at the beginning. Sorry..

  • what do you mean?

  • You can't use freeware programs to do a professional work. There's a reason for their high cost. It's like going on the highway with a bycicle or with a ferrari...

  • that's a big load of shit. it does not matter what program is used as long as the end result is of good quality and the program saves to an industry standard format. i could easily make a payware program for a million dollars, or use pirated photoshop, or use the gimp that comes free with linux, or a million other programs. it's the designer not the software. jeezus.

  • this is a really bad way of working... i hope no one will take advice from this please

  • Um, yeah you have the right idea of scanning your sketch in to work from it. But why not just go with Illustrator and pen tool it from there.

  • Why he's using Blender for tracing? There are easier ways to do it. If he's so enthusiast of open-source software he should take a look at Inkscape.

  • lol gimp

  • hi my name is eric hernandez i'm making this movie with whyy and i would like to know if we can use this clip of you designing a logo in our movie

  • I started out as a Linux user and at the time, Blender was the only thing available for doing 3D artwork. I must say, I didn't enjoy it at all. Props to you for even dealing with that.

  • I have the crappiest logo EVER! but mine's animated.

  • My logo vid sucks but kicks ass(but sucks)

Mine is better than his so sheaw

  • nice logo? wtf this is crappiest logo ive ever seen, sorry.

  • hey nice logo

hey friend can u tell me name of that software those you using for 3d some thing

    plz...

  • my sister does graphic design in college shes graduating in the fall im watching this becaus me and my firend are re designing a skate board

  • hmm iv never heard of using a 3d tool to produce 2d graphics and in this case the outcome was awful! unless hes going to animate the logo then he should know better!

I just hope someone who is wanting to learn logo design doesnt take advice from this video.

change the name of the video!

  • Also for all who doesn't know why you need to make it in vector is that when you resize the logo to any size it will not loose any detail and get pixelated. All the edges will stay smooth and you will get high detail logo even on giant posters that fits on a side of a building. It will look sharp and not blurry and pixelated.

  • Logo need to be made in a vector based program and not a 3d or bitmap program.

  • "Logo need to be made in a vector based program and not a 3d or bitmap program."

Right on. My earlier comments pretty much say the same thing as this. I don't know why people mark it as bad comment and make my rating negative, but I don't care that much.

Others know that logo design only needs vector drawing program. The rest of it is up to you. 3D might be useful AFTER you have the design perfected in 2D.

To start with 3D first is naive and distracting.

  • I think the guy's taken a novel approach in using a 3D program. Every 3D program generates just 2D graphics, after all.

He's not saying it's the BEST logo or even the BEST tutorial (I didn't hear him refer to it as a tutorial anyway). It's just HIS design. In some ways I prefer his more natural design to some of that over-corporate over-designed bollocks every one else plasters over their me-too franchises.

  • cbs8: "Ah logo design. I don't really have stuff to say about the logo design, but I have a short story to tell about it..."

cbs8 clearly isn't much of a teacher, but he is a bit of a con-artist ... pun intended.

And speludner, you know little about logo design. You use a 2D vector program, and thats IT. You don't use any 3D program because it distracts from the design process.

And spare me your lawyer drivel. He didn't say this and he didn't say that. He doesn't say much of anything.

  • So "it's my way or the highway"? Where is this rule written that says "only 2D tools. EVER"? I question your adherence to strict methodologies. Some of the best designers have broken the "rules". Further, he's not even using the 3D capabilities of Blender - he is using it as a 2D design tool.

I don't understand. Why is it you feel so 'conned' by this video? You seem to have a passion for logo design - did you want someone to teach you and he didn't do that?

  • speludner, listen to me. I am not being fascist. Review 95+ comments and you'll see that others say the same thing. 3D tool is overkill. Logos by nature are 2D objects, even if they have a 3D look to them. They are a kind of symbol, NOT a drawing of a 3D object.

I feel decieved because this video is titled "logo design" and its an incorrect and anecdotal video by a kid who only vaguely understands it.

    See video:

Bell Logo - Design History & Evolution!

Read my comments. I know design.

  • nightowl8936, I'm not saying you don't know design. I watched your Bell Logo video - v. professional. I'm just wondering why you're ranting against this kid instead of coming up with more of your own stuff. You obviously have the talent.

Re 2D/3D: design, technology & ideas change. A few years ago many questioned using a computer to do design instead of pencils, paper etc. Now everyone does. I'm not saying 3D is a trend, but I would view it with an open mind to see if it offers possibilities.

  • "many questioned using a computer to design instead of pencils..."

Computers can enhance many things that were traditionally done on paper, yes, but there needs to be computer analogs to the methods of the previous medium, AND functionality that the previous medium did not offer.

2D graphics on a 2D computer screen with the ability to easily make corrections and adjustments is an obvious improvement over pencil and paper.

FYI, I have designed wings with 3D CAD software so I know it too.

  • Having said all that, I understand when you say you feel deceived. Certainly this kid only vaguely understands the rich art of logo design. Perhaps if he'd titled it "Playing with 3D to produce a logo" or some such you'd feel differently?

  • Just my 2 cents:

Yes, technology and ideas change. But what he's trying to say is that you shouldn't use 3d programs to make 2d graphics, and vice versa. 3d may be a new medium, but making a 2d logo in 3d is, in many ways, like filming a closeup of a book's pages being turned. It's easier to just read the book, and leave film to be its own medium.

My point is that each medium has its own place, and this video shows someone overcomplicating things a bit by mixing up the two mediums.

  • "Perhaps if he'd titled it 'Playing with 3D to produce a logo' or some such you'd feel differently?"

Yes, I would consider it much more honest, though this is not nearly as bad as people who much more blatantly disrespect viewers by lying to them about their video's and tricking people into watching it. People like that should be caned Singapore style.

Anyway, this video is NOT worth nearly 50,000 views.

  • Listen dude, I am sure you are a skilled graphics person, but this is less tutorial on logo design than it is about open source software.

You start off good, by talking about brainstorming graphic logo concepts, and working with the person, but you stop talking about logo design and then veer off into promoting Blender.

I am of the opinion that if your tool set is too complex, you get distracted by the bells and whistles instead of focusing on logo design itself. Blender is an example of this.

  • Nice little tutorial.

  • Blender looks like a pretty cool program. I use Illustrator and all the adobe stuff. Does Blendor come for the Mac???

  • mac?! ah... when will people learn..

  • yeah I know

  • I bought a $3000 PC a year ago, got a job at scarab design which use macs, i learnt on a mac at design school. And now my pc pretty mch is a mac and i'd trade it for a G5 any day

  • Just get an iMac, you can't go wrong!

  • Macs are good machines. Their user interface is by far the best of any machine out there.

I only wish Sun workstations used Apples interface for Solaris.

The only problem with Mac is that the rest of the world is still using an inferior doppleganger of Mac called Windows.

    When will THEY learn?
