The way I see it, it's a happy movie to me! A guy is sick of a scary town, he wants to bring warmth and joy to his town, he falls in love with a Cinderella kind of girl, some bad things happen but then everyone is happy. That's my take on it.

I don't get why people find this emo, or why emo kids love it so much. There's so much passion and emotion in Jack's character, and the movie isn't depressing or about darkness. The characters are actually quite funny and comical, and the contrast between the two holidays is both amusing and funny.
