  • i love how the top comments DONT contradict one another..

  • thumbs up if u muted this fucking song

  • what a thing to say 'deadlift sucks' the dealift dont like u either

  • @TonightHey negged

  • Deadlift sucks. Can't get it right for the life of me. I feel nothing in my back, only my legs.

  • @sugmegpls i'm no expert but maybe your lower back is too weak and legs work too hard. i've had uneven muscle growth and that was usually the case; one muscle was too strong for the compound movement so i had to work the other in isolation to catch up. Just my two cents

  • @sugmegpls then youre doing it wrong or working with too much weight. Anyone can do it right if they take the time to learn. And go slow with weight

  • I love how the top comments contradict one another : /

  • Hey, I once deadlifted to much without warming up so I got a "snap" in my back, followed by a week of pain in my lower back.

This has happened two more times after this event, but I'm certain that my technique was right, could it be that my lower back is to weak after the first injury? I'm afraid to deadlift now

  • hey there, important question,,,,, i have this middle/lower back injury , its been 3 years now , was a cut tendon , i sort of fixed it a little bit, but not fully as anyone who has had such an injury can tell... i am a weight lifter though, which is why i need to ask if there is any way to regain what i have lost, currently i can only deadlift 200KG but a man my size, i should be able to do atleast 300 ,, i dont use any kind of supplements what so ever , except centrum maybe :D multi vits

  • @devil0slayer wow!well done dude :)

200kg=440lbs its not so little u know :P

  • @kwstas67 thanks man, well yeah 440lbs aint little i'm sure :D i dont mean to show off at all, but i've always wanted to be one of the worlds strongest men, and i'm still working at it, i'm having good progress and i thank god i didnt fully lose my back.

  • @devil0slayer I hope u get there one day:) now the real deal:

How the fuck did u learn how to deadlift?I mean its been 9 months i still dont know how to do it i try so much i cant learn alone :(

I said one day so no more deadlifting but then again i want a bigger back so?I dont think i get there with rows n pullups alone its drivin me crazy !!!!!!!!11

  • @kwstas67 well the deadlift is very much different from all other exercises in my opinion, a human naturally has strong legs and a strong back, but if you dont execute the move 100% correct, you could get very bad injured.

i believe that especially with the back, you should start with low weights, i started off lifting 50kg, took me 6 months to reach 100 , 1 year to reach 200, 1.5 years to reach 250. after injury i started with just 20kg 2 months after the injury, and slowly up again.

  • @devil0slayer It seems to me that an injury serious enough to carry over for three years may need some sort of medical assistance. Also, why are you so concerned about how much you can lift? The key to getting a muscular physique is striving for muscular contraction. One suggestion I may give is to shoot for a rep range of 8-12 with every exercise you do for your back. This will help you achieve more muscular contraction by filling the muscle up with as much blood as possible. Good luck!

  • @hunterholderfitness

well the injury is fixed and all, but my back is not what it used to be, i dont push it like i used to for fear the injury might come back.

i am concerned with heavy weights because i am somewhat of an amature heavy weight lifter, i dont care much about the six packs or the good looks, as much as i care about my ability to lift heavier weights. its an urge i cant explain, i just have that urge.

  • @devil0slayer I totally understand man, sometimes you just have those urges for no reason at all! Well good luck and I hope your back doesn't give you any more problems in the future.

  • @hunterholderfitness thank you very much :)

  • deadlift pullups and dips

  • @BlackPhoenix623 you can jack me off

  • roebuckk, do you have to contract your glute at lockout? some articles i've read you have to. but if you do that, wont your hips go forward and cause your lowerbck to round?

  • does the grip matter ie under, over or under/over. thanks

  • @XMasLeeX When it comes to deadlift grip you have two main choices, overhand or mixed (over/under), both of which have their own pros and cons.

Don't ever use a double underhand grip. It's an inferior grip that could lead to a ripped bicep!

  • @sbowesuk really?? 0.0 thanks fo the info

  • is soarness in the lower back area the next day normal or due to bad form ?

  • @NUFCtillidie9 depends on the soreness. With good form you can get soreness in the lower back muscles that is similar to the soreness you get when you safely work any other muscle. With bad form you can get a soreness that is different to having 'worked' muscles.

  • @NUFCtillidie9 due to being gay :)

  • @OriginalJoseyWales good job man i never heard that joke before (clap)

  • @NUFCtillidie9 :) Thanks for the clap. Its only right that you applaud my great sense of humour.

  • @NUFCtillidie9 dont bend over crooked while youre taking it up the ass bro, that fucks your lowerback up.

  • "Heals"?

  • Would be awesome if there was a normal speed of this aswell, to get ANOTHER point of view. Very nice guide btw!

  • Should I keep my knees locked at top? Or keep them slightly bent?

  • @ImJJames Any exercise you do, you should have the joints slightly bent. Having straight arms at the end of bench presses or straight knees on heavy deadlifts will have the effect of the 2 corresponding bones 'scratching' eachother, and will lead to serious injury in the long run!

  • @berryhill88 For Close-Grip Bench press when your focusing on triceps I can lock out right?

  • @ImJJames I do that myself, I just make sure I don't 'overextend' my joints so that they are in resting state, or bone-on-bone if you get my point

  • I did Deadlift once following your technique but I dont understand why I felt all work on my femoris than on my back at the next day! actually I didnt feel antyhing on my back while training, instead, my back legs where shacking. maybe it should be really heavy? does it work using a medium weight far from the RM? I mean, around 70% from 1RM....Actually

  • My only problem is keeping grip.

Any suggestions, good informative video :).

  • @fujipix08 really? you can lift heavy but you have the grip of a women? that's wierd xD. try gloves?

  • @MagicCryo Comedian ;)

I have started using chalk instead its very much a help.

  • Why do I seem to see people do 2different types of dead lift because some ppl bend there legs as they go down which techniques better?

  • In the slo-mo at the end, the guy has his grip with his left palm facing away and right facing facing towards him, is this personal preference or required?

Just starting with weights and wanna get it right

  • @bLindSC2

this is just a different grip to help hold the bar due to heavy weight. after doing one set you switch the grip so you have the same effect on each forearm.

  • good vid

  • I find placing the bar on the floor much tougher at the end of each rep-dorian didnt place on the floor between reps to keep constant tension on the back and minimise leg involvement.

  • I do 320 with my penis before breakfast.

  • i think this video is explaining the concept very nicely....the author of this video should come up with more such kind of concept...but i think regular excerise also keeps u fit

  • U also need a very strong core before u start doing advanced strength training such as this. To many people skip the small things such as sit up, pushups and walking or running and just jump into big weights looking for Hollywood muscles.

  • Nobody in their right fkn mind deadlifts with gloves on !!! What are you a hand model ???

  • I have a question..i am trying to tone my body up and i heard that deadlifts is a great way to lose weight and tone up. The thing is i dont want to gain too much muscle like that guy in the video. i want to stay lean, but with the cuts and maybe a FEW pounds of muscle. Will lifting heavy deadlifts while eating proper nutrition (i want to lose about 10 pounds) give me my expectations? im also going to do squats, and bench press (heavy compound training)

  • @TheDeLaKore

    Are you joking?

  • @Doug44393 why would i be joking? I wanted information, so i asked a question

  • @TheDeLaKore

just go on bodybuilding . com and ask that question on the forums.you will get way better answers there.

  • @TheDeLaKore Yeah compound lifting will help you achieve those goals.

  • @secutorclaudius it will touch you dick..

  • You should also squeeze your glutes ;)

  • I've never done these before, should i just start out with only the olympic 45 pound bar for the first week or two or should i go lighter?

  • Love the comment.....thrust your hips forward completely to lock out as you stand erect. Ummm, we still talking Deadlifts here?

    Great video.

  • @ Crosswire7777 you must be that skinny guy they smack around while on their way to the water fountain. I'm almost certain everytime they smack you they let out a huge HUAAGGHH!!!

  • great form thx!!!!!!

  • Thank you for a video without commercials!

  • do you recommend dead lift for people with history of lower back injury?

  • @nixtha no you should not deadlift if you have an injured back. a strong healthy back is required for dead lifting!

  • @roebuckk no way dead lifts are a great way to get your back in shape again, start with just the bar and progress slow. to many people think that injured body parts get better all by them selves. the new tissue doesnt know how to perform certain moves so it pulls on itself causing pain. best physiotherapy is the use of the muscle

  • @roebuckk Mate I've got an L5/S1 disc protrusion and I deadlift. Lifting is about technique...

  • @roebuckk A* advice

  • @nixtha Just because you have a history, that doesn't mean you have to avoid this movement. Keep the weight light and make sure your form is spot on. Your injury could have been from bad form in the first place?

  • @phitches no i was born with fractured spine so with that condition i have, even though my form was perfect i still got injured every time i tried to do dead or heavy squat. so i usually stay away from those major exercise.

  • @nixtha wow, don't know what that would be like. but yes, the dl is a back/ spine extreme movement if u go as heavy as u can. if it hurts, don't fuck it up further. just do stuff that doesn't hurt. and squats make my lower back sorer than dl's.

  • @nixtha if done right deadlifts should help strengthen your back so you are less prone to injury. You are fine as long as you do the movements right and start off using very light weights

  • @nixtha deadlifting solved my back pains

I didn't have an injury though, just a weak lower back from sitting all day

    cheers.

  • @nixtha Proper technique will only help your lower back to strengthen. Squat below parallel with proper technique for a while to reduce the pain in your back.

  • @nixtha ask your doctor if you are in proper condition to do so.

  • @nixtha actually I would recommend it, but start with a very small weight first, we have bars that are 7kg only, I would start with that. For the first 2-3 times do 5 sets of 5 focusing on the technique, keep a flat back to avoid further injuries, if feeling comfortable increase weight to 10kg, then 15 and so on, I believe you should not aim for 100-150 kg or so since you had an injury, but you definiatly should work on those muscles to support your spine! Do it with CARE.

  • @nixtha don't listen to that dumbass deadlifting while using proper form is great for people with histories of lower back injuries. It strengthens the muscles in your lower back and can even make you pain free.

  • @JLogan166 It made me pain free, even though I have to work on my technique on higher weights! Happy new year!

  • @nixtha I would as long as you keep it really light and build up. My Dad suffered lower back damage in his 20's. Years of kung fu helped to recondition it. He started weight lifting 18 months ago (in his 50's) and has built up his dead lift to 220 lb with strict form. If you're not stupid with the weight and have done sufficient physio to recover the flexibility, light dead lifting will probably be beneficial.

  • Dead-lifting it the best workout ever!

  • actually, according to the super buff guys at my gym, proper way to put down the bar is to drop it, and let out a huge HUAAGGHH!!! as you make crazy faces at yourself in the mirror. also, be sure to slap a skinny guy upside the head as you make your way to the water fountain

  • @crosswire7777 : Holly cow, your comment is so Fing funny, LOL.

I am a kind of a buff guy but I HATE to scream, face morph, abuse 98 pound weaklings, drop the weights, grunt, flex, and anything that will draw unneccesary attention at the gym. I see assholes at the gym that have seen Pumping Iron way too many times all the time. (Not to mention all their BLAH BLAH BLAH) That sh*t gets old, I agree with you. Nice and funny as hell commenet there, partner! By the way, cool ass handle name.

  • @crosswire7777

Hahaha, man I laughed so hard at this!

  • @crosswire7777 i think you forgot the part where they lift super heavy weights with improper technique :)

  • @crosswire7777 bwahahahahaha

  • @crosswire7777 I have received very similar instruction at my gym, with the addtion of 15 minutes posing in the mirror between sets

  • @crosswire7777 haha

  • @crosswire7777 r u the skinny guy?

  • bad form at bottom -- you put the bar down ok try picking it up that way to.

  • Because it is a "dead"lift. Hanging ultimately teaches bad technique, as you can shift into a Romanian deadlift from your conventional deadlift which a lot of people end up doing. Each rep, light or heavy should be rested. Use clusters in deads not sets.

  • shouldnt the scapula be over the bar?

  • Thanks! great instruction

  • I like this song.

  • @ 0:22 its spelled 'heels' not 'heals'

  • Watch my video please!!!!

what do you think of mine? Heaviest lift i can do!

  • @izEnii Obviously you weren't doing it right, this is actually some really good form

  • u neglected anything about the eccentric phase, and thats where people slip the most! But i do like how you mentioned keeping the hips back, which no one does.

  • @areMiller you can't deadlift without locking your knees.

  • @bigbobabc123 Its actually not necessary to lock ur knees, more important is to lock your hips and squeeze those glutes

  • Very informative video

  • Best excerise you can do, but you gotta learn how to do it properly. Notice that his arms are not moving forward or backwards at all. They simply go up and down.

  • is there a way to protect your shins/ legs while doing a deadlift? i always seem to cut myself even with pants on

  • @Turksdahustla no, knee socks is all, if your cutting your shins congratulations your one of only 5% of people doing it right :)

  • @Turksdahustla no, knee socks is all, if your cutting your shins congratulations your one of only 5% of people doing it right :)

  • do not lock your knees... FAIL

  • @areMiller wtf are you talking about?

  • @wralphh locking ur knees is fail, do you speak english or your just an idiot?

  • @areMiller are you a 14 year old broscientist bodybuilder or are just an idiot?

  • @wralphh watch any pro lifter do a set of dead lifts then get back to me, locking knees shifts workload to joints and relieves contraction a great deal from the ideal targeted areas.. would you wanna lock out your elbows on a bench press?? same concept , might be to hard to grasp for you... idk, locking out = resting the targeted muscle/shifting workload out of them into joints aka you = fail

  • @areMiller Look into every powerlifting association in the world and read their rules.. then get back to me. And yes you are supposed to fully lock your elbows on bench press.

  • what angle should my knees be when i lower the bar?

  • dat song

  • @13andincrediblycut dnt jus say that shit without an explanation, say why its wrong.. am not jus gna visit this page and wait for u to upload some shit..

  • is this exersize dangerous if i was training for power to do 6 reps, so high weight relative to me?

  • if anyone workouts out to this music theyre an idiot. listen to some metal or hard hip hop--wtf is this bullshit? this makes me want to jump out the window of the gym

  • Do you still do the slow negative when you're maxing?

  • is the barbell bar supposed to be tight against your legs? or do u keep a distance?

i have like a jungle on my legs so it will be painful for the hair to be torn out

  • okay but if im deading 225 i dont want my leg hair being torn out and having bloody shins

  • @roebuckk - why do you lay the bar down while doing reps? isn't is better to let it 'hang' in the air? ( not on the floor during the reps)

  • @Jappster2906 you can do it either way. with light weight I let it hang in the air but with heavier weight I rest it back on the floor.

  • @roebuckk The deadlift should always be left on the floor between each rep. It is called a "dead"lift.

Put the bar on the floor. If you don't trust me on this read Rippetoe.

  • @roebuckk

First part (DEAD part) is very important. Always put it back on the floor. Don't cheat by 'hanging' or 'bouncing'

  • @Jappster2906 for me deadlifts are much heavier if i drop it to the floor after every rep, i like to hold the tension, so i let it hang in the air through the whole set. Holding the tension gives me a more proper form. with "lighter" weights below 280 i sometime drop it after every rep, but as i said, its not a preference of mine. everything above 300 i keep it off the floor to avoid injuries. with my 6 feet 7 deadlifts are difficult enough ;-)

  • @Jappster2906

It's all in the name of the exercise bro - deadlift. It's a dead weight that you are lifting, so true form would be to touch the weight back down to the floor. Then start the movement all over again. Fun times! :-D

  • @Jappster2906 It's all in the name of the exercise bro - deadlift. It's a dead weight that you are lifting, so true form would be to touch the weight back down to the floor. Then start the movement all over again. Fun times! :-D

  • @Jappster2906 it takes more effort to lift from a dead position. Hence, the "dead"lift. Good luck with your fitness goals in 2008 and make sure you lift heavy and take a multi brah.

  • @Jappster2906 hence the name "deadlift"... "hang in the air" is easier due to muscle reflex in the motor pathway, setting it back down is much harder where you have no momentum or muscle reflex assisting the lift, muscle contraction needs to be reset and maximized in position to begin the lift once again... "DEADlift" is superior to the rep "hanging" lift in terms of max resistance and muscular recruitment

  • @Jappster2906 The excercise is called "Dead' lift, Bar should lay dead before the lift....

  • @Jappster2906 it means you cant use any momentum to bring it back up your lifting from the beggining again

  • @Jappster2906 You should always put the bar back on the floor to complete the rep. (DEAD lift)

  • @Jappster2906 its harder lifting it off the ground after you put it back down, that is actually the correct way of doing it, henc the name dead lift, you lift it from the dead position

  • @Jappster2906 It is called deadlift because you are supposed to lift a dead weight off the floor, and yes on every rep.

  • @Jappster2906 Actually, a dead weight (i.e. one sitting on the floor, not in motion) is harder to lift. So letting the weight rest on the ground before starting another rep is more difficult. It's personal preference, I think. :P

  • @LayzeeNpRoUd allright, thanks everyone for explaining it to me :p.. In my next schedule i'll try a 'real' deadlift.. can't wait.. wondering if I will notice some differerence between in motion / dead weight :-), I guess I will :P

  • @Jappster2906 You're suppose to bring it back on the ground thats a full deadlift, hence the word deadlift, you lift it from a dead position

  • well, I have been trying deads for a little while now and I still have a big problem, I think I was born to tall, with ultra long shins!! So when I bend down I cant get the bar past my knee's tried and tried. my shins are way to long. looks like I am going to have to leave the deads to you smaller dudes. (-:

  • @bisokinetic you have to retract your hips more, and your knees shouldnt be past your toes, just like when you do squats

  • Very good instructional. It helped me out ALOT. Keep the videos coming man

  • lol, "as you stand erect"

  • @wewtbewt yeah I can't smell too good! LOL

  • @wewtbewt yea i remember being 12

  • @wewtbewt i luv deadlifts so much that im erect when i grip the bar

  • Form tips are good, but who ever is in the video isnt executing them properly, but you got em right. One more thing to add is to make sure the Lats are activated throughout the lift, also lead with the hips going back on the way down, not the back going down

  • Hey at the top of your deadlift aren't you supposed to shrug/roll your shoulders back? or is that a different lift?

  • @2f2fbattlepope just bend backwards a bit, not much, just a bit

  • @2f2fbattlepope that is called Shrugs which is more for your shoulders.

  • @Niek67

Yeah I figured it all out.

I'm deadlifting more than twice my bodyweight now :)

  • @2f2fbattlepope Nice,

I'm just training for one year now.

My weight is 83 kilo's and I lift 160 kilo with deathlifting., I'm not sure how much that is in LBS, I'm from Holland we count in kilo's.

  • @Niek67

    How old are you?

  • @DoNultima 17 years old

  • Nice tutorial but you could of used a less emo song for doing deadlifts.

  • @hagzomush changed it just for you!

  • @hagzomush recently changed the music to something a bit better

  • wtf is this crap song

  • terrible song.

  • ares12790 i had that problem to my coach told me to wear a lifting belt :) helped keep my back straight

  • these guys' back are partly arched

  • I get slight lower back pain when I lift the bar up even though I keep my back straight and lift slowly with a weight I can lift properly and safely.

Could it because I need to strengthen my lower back?

  • Here is a tip for deadlifts. Say you deadlift 225. Instead of putting 2 45's at each end use 2 35's and 2 10's. This will increase the range of motion for the exercise making it more effective. You can go with even smaller weights if you don't mind the extra work.

  • The sumo deadlift is also a good technique if regular deadlifts feel akward.

  • You will injure your spine shortly. Way too much back and leaning out over the weight. You would be wise to do sumo technique for your safety and well being. I like to go rock bottom, load up a single dumbell and add weight to my back pack. Packed on the muscle on lower body fast injury free.

  • great video, horrific music though

  • why does his left hand have an under hand grip and his right hand have an over hand grip?

  • Kudos and thanks for the great video- I like the 'unnecessary music' too, BTW

  • my lower back feels a bit strained or sore after doing my deadlifts. i just started so any tips? thanks

  • @SteezyTre For some of us, it's impossible to deadlift with a straight bar, other than "sumo" style.

Ever see those OSHA posters on how to lift correctly? Squat down rock bottom, then pick up a ?lb dumbell using one hand to grip and the other hand under the hand gripping weight and stand up...concentrating on using leg muscles and keeping back upright. When you can do 3 sets of 5. Add ?lbs. (I use a 200lb dumbell with 100lbs in my back pack)

  • Very distracting, annoying song that has nothing to do with the video (like countless other youtube videos. "Oh, I love this song, I will just assume everyone watching wants to hear it even though it has no purpose in this video.")

That said, the video itself was very good.

  • what's the difference between regular deadlifts and straight legged deadlifts? which of the two should i do on my back day, and which should i do on my leg day?

  • @PhanatixDDH straight leg deadlifts target the hams and gluts and would be better done on your leg day

  • @roebuckk

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • im having a little trouble keeping my back straight and my shoulders back when lowering the bar. Anyone got any tips please???? Thanks

  • @ares12790 you probably need to use less weight until your back gets stronger
