It's strange that there is so much variation between languages - unfortunately the sign alphabet is totally different even among English speaking countries. This really confused my son who uses Auslan (Australian version)!

You mean ASL, not ESL. ESL is English as a Second Language. This is American Sign Language. Which is Actually MUCH easier, to most people in the States, than British Sign Language(BSL)

There is no known 'original" because there have always been Deaf people, there is the first documented one, which was in France, but it obviously isnt the first sign language alphabet.
