I'm a bit surprised at Hitchens in this video. As far as I can tell, he never actually answered Turek's question of why certain actions, i.e. heroism, bravery, etc. are 'morally right.' It appears he misunderstood the question when he went on to say that just because we're all primates means we can't be moral. I do agree with what was said, but he either avoided the question or misunderstood it. It's not something that happened with Christopher with virtually any degree of frequency.
@Cha11engerD I noticed this too. I found it rather frustrating, because I've heard his responses to the exact same questions before. And of course, he exposed how fatuous they were.
I wonder why there was so much of a disconnect there. Perhaps a combination of the booze and being repeatedly asked childish questions?
I worked with the guy who was on that bus who chopped that guys head off. His name was Vince Lee and I worked with him at McDonalds in Thompson Manitoba. Only a few hours away from where the incident occurred.
the reason I dont go out and eat children and shoot random people is cause I would feel bad. . its not that I really want to but Im afraid of some god
LOL @ what it would take for a theist to have their opinions swayed, the true answer is nothing. There is nothing that can take place that would refute them because they are brought up as their religion being the ABSOLUTE truth. All it would take to dissuade an atheist would be for that god to come down and make himself known. Myself as an atheist would react as such: "huh, I was wrong". That would be it. We all know that won't happen though lololololol
I'm noticing a scary number of people that answer: "If tomorrow it was discovered that there was no god, would you go out and murder and rape people?" to which the response is "Why not?". This scares me, as Theists say that Atheists have no morals, but if they were to suddenly become without a God, they would have LESS!
@420bluntsmokerxXx Apart from alcohol induce vasodilation, I'd like to point out how thick, unrational and daft is the silly-one. Enough to make anyone red... at least for human-shame.
Hitchen's opponent... that really noisy brat of a man. His 'what would make me change my mind' statement was absolutely telling of how little he even understood what proved his point, much less what could disprove it.
Human qualities of empathy and heroism can't be called "good" if they are ONLY human, because humanity is flawed, its motivations are suspect and relative, and it needs the absolute and unquestionable goodness God to redeem it -- that is what this man is really attempting to demonstrate. This deluxe model primate (myself) is insulted.
It's a good question -- why not call your faith "faith"? Not hard knowledge. Of course you can't, because that makes it relative. What greater fear is there?
@TheConfounditude I have read it, sir, as have many that find nothing in it to espouse. You should read my post more closely and thoroughly, perhaps. I am restating Turek's assumption before saying that it insults me.
@manthasagittarius1 So god created me flawed specifically so that if I didn't pray to him, I'd go to hell? To me that sounds like he was having a bad day.
@DemstarAus I'm not sure which post of mine you have read or how you construed it. I certainly agree with you that if a god created you flawed so that he could extort prayer from you as a mitigation against punishing you for your created state that he put there in the first place, that would have to be a very fucked up deity having a perfectly dreadful day, and an abusive deity at that.
"What is the chemical composition of love?" What nonsense. What is the chemical composition of the sentence Turek just pronounced? It definitely has one -- at the present, we don't have all the knowledge or measuring methodology to define it, but more than enough to know that it is a matter of neurochemistry, as is every aspect of human behavior. Nor is that reductionistic or an insult to the higher nature of morality -- it inspires real awe -- but it is the operating system it runs on.
This guy Hitchens is debating with makes me furious. It's like he's willfully rejecting from his mind counter points to his obviously unenlightened rationalizations, it's painfully obvious he hasn't read any philosophical classics which address the "good"...
This guy is saying empathy is bad. He realizes that people without empathy are antisocial, right? And he seems to me the kind of guy who automatically classifies antisocial people as evil so . . ..
Wow, Turek is unbelievably thick. I'm not even saying this as an atheist or supporter of Hitchens (even though I am, but I can give theists credit when they have good arguments), but Turek is a brick wall of solid ignorance through which no evidence or logic can pass. He seems to think being loud is the same as winning an argument.
@cosmosmonger What a huge lie that crap about atheist thinking "if you don't get caught, it's not a crime". What a fucking ignorant you are. But again, where is the consequence of a man who rapes and murder 100 women and then, immediately after, gets saved and dies?
@cosmosmonger "Human laws don't restrain man's evil will" If history is any judge, God's laws didn't either. On the contrary, nothing made people more happily commit atrocities as when God willed it.
@cosmosmonger I also see no reason talking to you. You seem to be one of those extremist religious people who think everyone who don't believe the things you do, should die. No matter what I say, you won't rethink your position. I know this because I've talked to many of you before, each dumber than the last.
Can't understand why Hitchens and Dawkins even bother trying to help people free themselves from illusions and fairy tales.
@cosmosmonger It's odd that you say that, then why is it that the law enforcement want no religious involvement in their work? And why is it priests molest boys? Do they not fear this omniscient being of yours? I think morals come from secular reasoning and social consensus. I don't want to kill my fellow man in fear that someone in turn will kill me.
Call it self-preservation. I live in Sweden, the 3rd most atheist country in the world, and I've seen none of this self-destruction.
Questions from all atheists. Take time and then answer. Why human speak and posses WORDS. You know very well what is mean by WORDS and Languages. All lions makes same noise, all monkey makes same noise all dolphins make same noise and give same signals all around the world. But why we human speaks different WORDS and languages in different part of the world ? Why Chines and English Words are not same while Chines monkey and British monkey makes same sound ? Friend, Word matters. In the beginnin
@cosmosmonger if you look up the facts, christians have the highest rape, murder, teen pregnancy, divorce rates and atheists have the lowest, yes, not at the bottom, but the fucking lowest crime rates and our laws are not founded on the bible, we have thou shalt not kill, but thats about as far as it goes
@wearestarstuffsagan "read your goddamn bible or go kill yourself" see, this is exactly what atheism does to otherwise sane humans. it devolves you from dignity in God's image to being a scumbag carnal beast chemically-mutated immoral sociopath with no self-control who tells other humans to kill their self. Unholy Christ-hating atheism is the very bane of human society; a cancer that's responsible for every aberration we witness when we turn on the nightly news.
@cosmosmonger dont apply anymore? jesus himself said that the law was NOT abolished, read your goddamn bible or go kill yourself, not joking, im sick and fucking tired of you assholes claiming the bible is true and all that shit without reading the fucking book
Turek sounds so arngry. I suppose his understanding of his losing argument frustrates him. The constant theme for Apologists to quote scripture as if that would solve an issue in a debate.
Hitchens stays cool because he has reason on his side.
@cosmosmonger Actually, as an atheist, I can say that if a man rapes a woman, it's pretty damn horrible. Why would you even mention that, along with pedophilia? Far as adultery and attacking your parents, which aren't nearly as severe, you would probably want to consider the circumstances behind those actions. After all, if a drunken father is attacking a child's mother, I wouldn't hold it against the child if he or she tried to do something about it.
@bS0up That's because we can explain emotions and behavior logically. We can't always know for sure the exact methods by which people act, but socialization is a phenomenon that exists within and without faith. As was said in the video, we are a bunch of chemicals, chemicals that created biological entities, entities that have a type of brain, a brain that wants to live, that want developed the abstract and social constructs that now surround us. Even if God did it, most faith is wrong.
@cosmosmonger Glad you brought this up. Your points about atheism were all absurd. We are not bacteria, it is never said humility & charity are for the weak, murder IS bad, the house was built, selfihnesss & lying are not good. You made up all of these points, which NO atheists has ever claimed to make yours seem more logical. But im also glad you bring up the morality of jesus in the bible, because there is a hell of a lot of wicked things people choose to ignore
It seems to me that while Hitchins is indeed a great debater, his forte is not science or cosmology.
He doesn't answer the religious guy's main questions about the origins of the universe and origins of morality. Those answers are better provided by a Richard Dawkins or a Sam Harris, who have backgrounds in science. Hitchins is better equipt tho to target and destroy the inherent absurdity of religion.
He is also unique in addressing the human need for spirituality and transcendence.
Perhaps at one point religion was required when as a civilization we were younger but now that we are more sophisticated and logical we don't need it anymore. At one point as children we needed a night light and someone to check for monsters but as we grow we realize their not real.
Sorry Mr. Turek, but right and wrong are labels. If you want to talk about morality, you have to reduce the claim to desirable outcome: what is desirable in our and of gestures, what purpose shall we pursue and those we shall avoid?
And, yes, there is a materialistic answer to that, but in a rather uncommon way. You see, the nature of the inquiry itself presupposes a pursuit, commonly held and as you might think, rejecting the claim to which it is reducible is self-contradictory.
All moral and ethical questions revolve around this simple thought: the pursuit of well-being.
Prove to me that it is otherwise, that someone would argue for the worst of two options, for more pain than gain and it would be the basis for his decision... because if no one disagrees with me, then you assess for the humean condition, providing a purpose through which an ought can now be derived.
Given reality, only limited answers suit that end, hence morality exists.
Call that as you like, I call it morality; despise it as not proven to be good, I call it a human tendency and a naturally desired pursuit... Put the words you enjoy putting on it to rejoice in your delusions. It's still is what I advocate, what all humans agree to and advocate in different forms, certain being obviously more efficient than others.
And I agree with Hitchens on this: if it was simply to agree with the judgment of a totalitarian leader, it would rip it from its intentional value.
on tureks assertion that the universe being finite would disprove theism, i could be wrong but is it not the case that there is at least some agreement that billions or trillions of years from now the universe will in fact fade out of existence? I thought this was a widely accepted theory.
There are chemicals which cause emotions o.O Seratonin, testosterone and hormones like that. If we gave you a tablet containing the hormones for depression, we could change your mood. I'm sorry but love is chemistry, as is every other emotion.
That is not to say emotions are pointless, nor do I say it to degrade them. Point of the matter is, in a materialistic world view emotions are very real, as is harm. Considering the harm/goodness ratio. When deciding harm is bad, morals will soon follow
I have two words for the NON doctor Turek regarding empathy, "mirror neurons." He obviously has no concept of neuroscience, maybe not even biology. A doctor, he is most certainly not. He is so mildly educated, that he had to subsume the title, doctor, to have ANY credibility.
Turek could turn anybody into a satanist, and he isn't going to Heaven as defined by his own words. I may not agree with Hitchens, but I don't expect a writer to know medicine. Turek is an embarrassment to my Faith.
As much as I enjoyed Hitchens's speech, he didn't really answer the question at hand: "What makes goodness good?" I think morality is an instinct, but I would have loved to hear his answer.
@LizaLermontov Turek thinks that there is no such things of morality if we are just a bunch of chemicals. That we therefore need "God" to see anything as "good". Biggest non-sequitur ever. And that is what Hitchens demonstrated.
So if the god particle was found he wouldn't say. Well, forget that everything in the bible is a lie, god created the god particle and made it so everything could happen randomly.....
why do so many religionists have to ask why obviously good actions are good without a god? are they telling us they personally would not act in ways we consider good if they held no belief in a higher dictator in the sky.
@Chomite "It is impossible to read Elizabethan history [i.e., the history surrounding Queen Elizabeth I of England; queen: 1558-1603] except in the context of an army of Jesuits, masters of deceit, treachery, treason, infiltration, subversion, assassination, insurrection, civil war and coercion, plotting for the good of the papacy, and the defeat of all the Pope's foes anywhere in the world." (1987)
@Chomite "Above all I have learned from the Jesuits. And so did Lenin too, as far as I recall. The world has never known anything quite so splendid as the hierarchical structure of the [Roman] Catholic Church. There were quite a few things I simply appropriated from the Jesuits for the use of the [Nazi] Party.
@Chomite "Today they [i.e., the Jesuits] are stronger in the United States than they ever were in any of the countries of Europe which expelled them as a menace to the government." (1912)
@Chomite "The Jesuits...are simply the Romish army for the earthly sovereignty of the world in the future, with the Pontiff of Rome for emperor...that's their ideal. ...It is simple lust of power, of filthy earthly gain, of domination -- something like a universal serfdom with them [i.e., the Jesuits] as masters -- that's all they stand for. They don't even believe in God perhaps."
Fyodor Dostoyevsky (1821-1881; famous Russian novelist)
Philosophical attempts to prove things exist have to be the most pathetic thing I have ever seen. Philosophy can lead us in the direction to discovering the existence of something, but it can never confirm it. Science is required for that.
Organized religions are intolerant, no doubt, but I think their threat to humanity is greatly exaggerated. A true theocracy seems to be fundamentally limited in what it can achieve technologically (Hitchens always points out the level of advancement is lower in religious societies) and thus the danger is lessened. Afghanistan or Somalis will NEVER have nuclear weapons, but Communist or Capitalist societies can. How come this is never talked about? Because we just enjoy patting our own backs
True, but those societies are developed enough - or at least a portion of them is developed enough like in India - where things like nuclear weapons are possible. Pakistan might have some pretty barbaric religious laws but surely it would be inaccurate to say that one the whole it society and its mode of production is "Islamic."
Yet when they accused of judging someone they take absolutly zero responsibility for their actions and put the blame on some imaginary fictional character.
I sit in a lot of court cases. 60% of the murders I sit on they try to say "God" or "Satan" made me do it. The sad thing is sometimes those murders go un-punished because the brainwashed jury empathizes with them and they get away with murder just because they share the same religion.
Please visit my channel for the unpopular truth about homosexuality.
A person does not need hatred or any kind of phobia in order to acknowledge important differences between heterosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption and homosexual attraction / behavior / marriage / adoption. Even non-religious people know this.
Homosexual activists, with support from the media, have succeeded at framing themselves as noble victims; it's an effective way to push a social agenda.
For without an understanding of 'bad' God could not create good. They are again, reliant on each other for distinguishing purposes. I could ask, 'Why is life good?' & in reality, there would be no absolute explanation. The reason it's good is because we are 'life' and think of it's opposite (death or non-existence) as bad, not because it is but because we don't understand it, don't like it & can't comprehend it's circumstances. We've defined it and we'll continue to do so. That's just how it is.
Just because your moral system revolves around what some Authority (with an atheist agenda, "God" would be an Athiest after all) says is right or wrong.
The problem is that you don't take the responsibility yourself and superimpose someone else's shady moral decisions onto someone else. It's funny how Christians judge us based on some belief system they have accepted and then get upset when we judge them on belief systems that we take 100% responsibility for.
"What makes it right?' Well, what makes it coming from God right? You still make the assumption that whatever God wants is good & only good. Maybe morality comes from a God (the deist one) but then so would too, immorality. They are two sides of the same coin. If God made morality, then he also too made immorality because without one, you could not do the other. Also by the very idea 'God created everything,' you are admitting God created good and bad, therefor himself, can't be an absolute...
Since Dawkins, Hitchens & their Marxist minions want to destroy religion altogether, will the next step will be to destroy all the believers as well? Will Christians, Jews, Moslems & Hindus be rounded up like we were in Russia, China & many other countries too? Censorship led to genocide in those cases.
@ZEDSTODT Atheism did not lead Mao or Stalin to kill people. Please read a history book before you make such a claim. Atheism is the lack of a belief in God or Gods. Mao and Stalin killed the religious people who they killed because they were not 'worshipping' the state. Now lets have a think of how many massacres have been carried out directly in the name of a God? Yes, its a cheap shot to use the 'Crusades' argument, and its a bad argument, but it is based in fact.
@LondonIrishRover So youre an expert on Mao & Stalin? Good to know there are so many experts on boobtube. Radicals with an ax to grind make it their lifes work to attack Christianity at every corner so Hitchens serves their goals. Marxists murdered more than 100 million people, deliberately targeting millions of Christians & brutalized billions more in less than a century. Jesus didnt come to force anyone to convert. Reexamine your malignant bias & stick to the facts before you cast insults.
@ZEDSTODT I never claimed to be an expert on Mao or Stalin and I did not insult you. And nothing that you said refuted anything in my post. Try again.
@ZEDSTODT said " Jesus didnt come to force anyone to convert. " Yes except that if you don't believe in him you get to be tortured forever. There's no element of compulsion 8-)
@lewisner God knows everyones heart & it will be up to Him if punishment is necessary. Luke 6:38 states-
"Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you.”
Gods judgement is perfect & Christ will return to bring the world to justice.
@ZEDSTODT We have a future in the UK...a recent government survey showed 44% of the population is atheist but this rises to 66% among 18-24 year olds. Religion will soon be like Trekkies here 8-)
@ZEDSTODT Sorry buddy but I am getting bored with this conversation. Goodbye and may the Flying Spaghetti Monster bless you with his noodley goodness 8-)
@lewisner Even more peculiar is what do you have to gain by attacking Christianity here day after day? Tens of millions of Christians were brutalized & murdered in Asia in the 20th century but from your lot comes barely a wimper. Instead nothing but a flood of aspersions & slander froths from you & your AntiChrist Bund on Boobtube year after year. Explain yourself.
So did Hitler, Stalin & Mao get away with their crimes? Have they escaped justice? After all according to you know-it-alls, death is the end & no atrocity will be addressed.
@ZEDSTODT Of course they have.Unless that is you click your heels three times, wish upon a shooting star that a big red guy with goat feet and horns pricks them with a fork over a lava lake. The only way to deal with such evil is through education and ridiculing the stupid before they gain power.
The hell exist on the earth. There's no hell in the bible, it is a symbolic place, it is the same with Adan and Eve, they are just the represention of the man and woman. Hell, is a child abuse, a child dying every 6 minutes in Africa because don´t have access to food, hell is cancer, hell is animal cruelty, hell is see your house destroyed and your family dead because you are a Palestinian, the real hell is when I see on tv all the atrocities committed in the name of God. Hell is on the Earth!!
Something is good when it benefits the group as a whole. It is a survival imperative to have "morals". A group of people who look out for each other will thrive, a group that doesn't will perish. You wouldn't make it through your first few days of life if nobody took care of you. Morality is an evolutionary survival mechanism, even animals take care of young. Just like turtles with shells are more likely to survive, groups of people who look after one another are more liklely to survive.
@lewisner So If I become influential enough I get to decide what is truth and what isn't? Does society collectively vote the boiling point of water? Where do absolute truths spur from in a world w/o God?
@mfarles4 The boiling point of water is determined by it's molecular structure and the laws of physics.Absolute truths are absolute truths in Hindu countries where they worship a different god(s) to you.Your god is nothing more than a product of the country you were raised in and your parents.
@lewisner If you're going to attribute another's beliefs to their parents and birthplace, wouldn't it be fair to also attribute your own beliefs to your parents and birthplace?
@sadmachine No. My parents were neither atheist nor religious. So, I was pretty much allowed to make my own mind up.When I realised santa claus was made up, I realised "god" was also made up. It was that simple. The area I grew up in BTW was christian.
@sadmachine Whether "gods" exist since the christian god is no more valid than any other. If you are not deliberately conditioned by your parents you can certainly decide for yourself.
@sadmachine said "wouldn't it be fair to also attribute your own beliefs ". I don't have "beliefs"- I shouldn't have to tell you that, since I am an atheist. Lack of belief in India or China is the same as lack of belief in England.
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees (religious leaders), you hypocrites! You are like whitewashed tombs, which look beautiful on the outside but on the inside are full of dead men's bones and everything unclean." - The guy who hated religion more than atheists.
I noticed that Chris' side of the audience has some pretty attractive people in it, while the other douche's side has fat ugly christ-tards. But seriously, I'm sick of Bronze Age religious thinking even being taken seriously in the 21st century.
There is a perfectly respectable philosophical view called Moral Naturalism under which right and wrong are simply natural, physical (albeit complex) properties of the world. It's just embarrassing for Turek to assume without argument that Moral Naturalism is indefensible.
There's no point in talking about morality if you're not going to deduce that altruism and empathy are right and inflicting unnecessary suffering on conscious beings is wrong. There maaay be exceptions, but if you're not going to take that as the basic rule for moral rectitude, then your moral code is simply wrong. We, as knowledgeable and rational beings, must create our own moral compass just as we create our own navigational compass.
@ScottBrown666 (cont.) ...You don't have to agree with geomagnetic science, you don't have to agree that north is north, but good luck crossing the ocean.
I bring up this point. Ants and wilderbeast havent read the bible. yet they work together and create colonies for survival and do show altriusm for others.
Why does every creationist have a face that you would really like to hit very hard and repeatedly. If my sister introduced this man as her partner to me, before he opened his mouth and before I knew anything about him, I would tell her to drop him like a hot piece of coal. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.
If abiogenesis spontaneous creation *without* specific design can be admitted under such conditions of regularity, then purposeful generation and definitely balanced creation can be the result of *error* ad perplexity, since these two are *opposed* to abiogenesis.
@xyoop Such a statement is highly *absurd* that order and rectitude should come about *without* a Creator, and disorder and impropriety of design and *fate* should suppose a Creator. He is an *ignoramus* who says this, because anything produced *without* design will ***never*** be exact and proportioned, while disorder and contrariness cannot co-exist with orderly design. God is far above what the *deluded and duped ignorant atheists* say.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
THIS HITCHIN GUY IS SO NEGATIVE, EVERYTIME YOU HEAR HIM. ITS APPARENT HE HAS SOME KIND OF ISSUE GOING ON. HERE YOU HAVE A GUY WHO IS FAMOUS FOR WHAT? BEING AN ARMCHAIR QUARTERBACK FOR SOME IRRELEVANT MAGAZINE, CRITICISING OTHERS, YET HE ACHIEVED NO GREATNESS IN HIS OWN LIFE. CHECK OUT HIS DEBATES AGAINST CHRISTIANS, THAT SAYS IT ALL.
the contradiction is, if your deeds on earth are what counts for you to go to heaven....but you cannot go to heaven even if you do those deed but do not believe in god. Then the conclusion is those deeds really don't count at all unless you believe.......doesn't this make god a fucking egotisitc super star wanna be, self centered, wanting everyone to praise and give attentiont him??
How could some of the scientists permit themselves to make a claim that would necessitate knowledge as extensive as the scheme of the universe, when their knowledge of the total scheme of being is *close* to zero, when confronted with a whole mass of unknowns concerning this very earth and tangible, lifeless matter, let alone the whole universe?
@1tabligh Yawn...you really are boring me with your delusional piffle!! You havent presented one ounce of logic reasoning. All you're doing is giving me YOUR abstract perception!!
I truly believe you need to do your home work on what an Atheist actually is and also on a serious note, really look into on how scientists ocme to the conclusion that something is fact but until then, i suggest you stop making yourself come cross as a complete twat!!
Your delusions that science has put out the notion of God is purely *rhetorical* and has nothing to do with logical method, because even thousands of scientific experiments could not possibly suffice to demonstrate that no non-material being or factor exists.
Your claim is nothing more than a *fanatical* illusion based on unproven theories.
@jjoneil73 Views such as these derive directly from a system of thought centered on materialism; within it, everything is defined and delimited with reference to materialism.
To interpret materialism in such a sense is in the final analysis strictly meaningless; it would be a superstitious notion involving the perversion of truth, and to regard it as scientific would, in fact, be *treason* to science.
Do scientific discoveries and knowledge cause such a scientist to conclude that matter, *unknowing and unperceiving *, is his creator and that of all beings?
No?
Then how can the duped and the brainwashed atheists and some of the scientists delude themselve and *believe* that hydrogen and oxygen, electrons and protons, should first produce themselves, then be the source for all other beings, and finally decree the laws that regulate themselves and the rest of the material world?
What is called science by the *science-worshippers* of the present age and regarded by them as equivalent to the sum total of *reality*, is simply a collection of laws applicable to a single dimension of the world. The result of all human effort and experimentation is a body of knowledge concerning a minute bright dot comparable to the dim light of a candle-surrounded by a dark night enveloping a huge desert of indefinite extent.
All praise is due to ALLAH, the Lord of the Universe.
:Hitchens repeats a strong anti-theist point: if you do a moral deed "for god" it is done for a reward or out of fear but not out of empathy or solidarity -it thus abolishes morality, individual choice etc." You do a moral deed out of obedience. It is something you do not for yourself for you to gain ANYTHING. It's not to make you feel good and it won't get you in heaven. It is to simply accept the grace that has been given to you and show that grace to others so that they might know it as well
And then you look around and you try to find somebody that cares about somebody other than themselves. it's hard to find. i can go days without seeing a christian. Music blasts blatantly satanic selfish and homosexual ideas into the minds of people. People believe in there lustful desires. just like nickolous shreck planned. These thought processes are as much connected with satanism as white is connected to rice. i'm not a fool.

What greater fear is there?
manthasagittarius1 2 weeks ago
@manthasagittarius1 You should read Leviticus...the unquestionable goodness of god is firmly in question.

DemstarAus 1 week ago
@DemstarAus I'm not sure which post of mine you have read or how you construed it. I certainly agree with you that if a god created you flawed so that he could extort prayer from you as a mitigation against punishing you for your created state that he put there in the first place, that would have to be a very fucked up deity having a perfectly dreadful day, and an abusive deity at that.
manthasagittarius1 1 week ago
"What is the chemical composition of love?" What nonsense. What is the chemical composition of the sentence Turek just pronounced? It definitely has one -- at the present, we don't have all the knowledge or measuring methodology to define it, but more than enough to know that it is a matter of neurochemistry, as is every aspect of human behavior. Nor is that reductionistic or an insult to the higher nature of morality -- it inspires real awe -- but it is the operating system it runs on.

@cosmosmonger What a huge lie that crap about atheist thinking "if you don't get caught, it's not a crime". What a fucking ignorant you are. But again, where is the consequence of a man who rapes and murder 100 women and then, immediately after, gets saved and dies?
Fangalatic 3 weeks ago

@cosmosmonger I also see no reason talking to you. You seem to be one of those extremist religious people who think everyone who don't believe the things you do, should die. Can't understand why Hitchens and Dawkins even bother trying to help people free themselves from illusions and fairy tales.
youtubian2500 3 weeks ago
@cosmosmonger It's odd that you say that, then why is it that the law enforcement want no religious involvement in their work? And why is it priests molest boys? Do they not fear this omniscient being of yours? I think morals come from secular reasoning and social consensus. I don't want to kill my fellow man in fear that someone in turn will kill me.
Call it self-preservation. I live in Sweden, the 3rd most atheist country in the world, and I've seen none of this self-destruction.
youtubian2500 3 weeks ago
@cosmosmonger
When they fear consequence you say?
You mean consequences like prison or fines?
The "physics of reality" (lol) is simple:
People don't want other people to steal their stuff, so they could either
1) Create a religion
2) Create laws and law enforcement
Which one do you think actually does something about the problem?
I believe "if I don't get caught it's not a crime", I also think of the consequences before I would commit the crime, like getting shot in the face.

At one point as children we needed a night light and someone to check for monsters but as we grow we realize their not real.
jackflash341 1 month ago
KrugmanTheKing 1 month ago
@KrugmanTheKing
KrugmanTheKing 1 month ago
Call that as you like, I call it morality; despise it as not proven to be good, I call it a human tendency and a naturally desired pursuit... Put the words you enjoy putting on it to rejoice in your delusions. It's still is what I advocate, what all humans agree to and advocate in different forms, certain being obviously more efficient than others.
And I agree with Hitchens on this: if it was simply to agree with the judgment of a totalitarian leader, it would rip it from its intentional value.
KrugmanTheKing 1 month ago
on tureks assertion that the universe being finite would disprove theism, i could be wrong but is it not the case that there is at least some agreement that billions or trillions of years from now the universe will in fact fade out of existence?

Hategrin 3 months ago
"What makes it right?' Well, what makes it coming from God right? You still make the assumption that whatever God wants is good & only good. Maybe morality comes from a God (the deist one) but then so would too, immorality. They are two sides of the same coin. If God made morality, then he also too made immorality because without one, you could not do the other. Also by the very idea 'God created everything,' you are admitting God created good and bad, therefor himself, can't be an absolute...

There is a perfectly respectable philosophical view called Moral Naturalism under which right and wrong are simply natural, physical (albeit complex) properties of the world. It's just embarrassing for Turek to assume without argument that Moral Naturalism is indefensible.
ortcutt 6 months ago
There's no point in talking about morality if you're not going to deduce that altruism and empathy are right and inflicting unnecessary suffering on conscious beings is wrong. There maaay be exceptions, but if you're not going to take that as the basic rule for moral rectitude, then your moral code is simply wrong. We, as knowledgeable and rational beings, must create our own moral compass just as we create our own navigational compass.

Why does every creationist have a face that you would really like to hit very hard and repeatedly. If my sister introduced this man as her partner to me, before he opened his mouth and before I knew anything about him, I would tell her to drop him like a hot piece of coal. I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him.

No one will remember that other guy, whoever he is. Hitchens clearly didn't think much of him, either.

The only thing that makes me more sick than "intelligent design" is so called fine tuning
xyoop 6 months ago 21
@xyoop What does "fine tuning", in this context, mean?
pacmandem 6 months ago
@xyoop Absurdity of Atheism!
If abiogenesis spontaneous creation *without* specific design can be admitted under such conditions of regularity, then purposeful generation and definitely balanced creation can be the result of *error* ad perplexity, since these two are *opposed* to abiogenesis.
1tabligh 2 months ago
@xyoop Such a statement is highly *absurd* that order and rectitude should come about *without* a Creator, and disorder and impropriety of design and *fate* should suppose a Creator. He is an *ignoramus* who says this, because anything produced *without* design will ***never*** be exact and proportioned, while disorder and contrariness cannot co-exist with orderly design. God is far above what the *deluded and duped ignorant atheists* say.

@severnkenpo - check out his arguments against Muslims ... they are great!
And apply equally well to Christians.

the contradiction is, if your deeds on earth are what counts for you to go to heaven....but you cannot go to heaven even if you do those deed but do not believe in god. Then the conclusion is those deeds really don't count at all unless you believe.......doesn't this make god a fucking egotisitc super star wanna be, self centered, wanting everyone to praise and give attentiont him??

@jjoneil73 The atheist Delusion!
1tabligh 2 months ago
@1tabligh Yawn...you really are boring me with your delusional piffle!! You havent presented one ounce of logic reasoning. All you're doing is giving me YOUR abstract perception!!
I truly believe you need to do your home work on what an Atheist actually is and also on a serious note, really look into on how scientists ocme to the conclusion that something is fact but until then, i suggest you stop making yourself come cross as a complete twat!!
jjoneil73 2 months ago
@jjoneil73 The atheist Delusion!
1tabligh 2 months ago
@1tabligh Clearly you still do not understand the meaning of atheism. I implore you, do your fucking research!!!
Its you and your religeous faith that assert the proposition of a creator so the burden of proof lies with you, simple!
So go ahead, me and my fellow atheists await...? (no doubt for some time)

1tabligh 2 months ago
Do scientific discoveries and knowledge cause such a scientist to conclude that matter, *unknowing and unperceiving *, is his creator and that of all beings?
No?
Then how can the duped and the brainwashed atheists and some of the scientists delude themselve and *believe* that hydrogen and oxygen, electrons and protons, should first produce themselves, then be the source for all other beings, and finally decree the laws that regulate themselves and the rest of the material world?
1tabligh 2 months ago
