The Mazda MX-5 is the best selling sports car in history, and yet it fits your "oldtimer" definition: it has a naturally aspirated engine, a manual transmission and no power steering (depending on the generation). It's more fun and rewarding to change gear yourself. Flappy paddle gearboxes are only appropriate for race cars. Real driver's cars have manual transmissions.

Manual gearboxes will be overcome soon by the new generation of auto gearboxes. Mazda MX5 is a great car, but it didn't get my vote. VW Polo GTI with DSG gave me more pleasure to drive. We are all different and you are not a best driver only to use a manual gearbox. I have 2 cars with auto and 2 others with manual.

ur actually a little of the facts there , ive seen a cupra bocanegra ( same engine as th cupra ) so no different in speed , beat all hot hatches in races , focus st , corsa vxr's clio sports , everythin like that , only standard hot hatch car ive seen beat the seat was a focus rs , and only just by a couple of cm's , also the seat dependin on how gd u drive can do 0-60 in 6.9 seconds , ive seen it with my own eyes , grown up ? ive driven a cupra , it was immense! best lookin , fastest , winner!

I would go for the Seat,because it's best looking,really good to drive and its not too expensive.It offers great balance between practicaliti,performance and reliability.I do like Clio and its best to drive between these 3 but its not very good value for money and interior is very boring,and Fiat...well its good looking and puchy but its very impractical and it's not very reliable.This is just my opinion,i would like to hear your's. look at it this way, what car would you rather live with on a day to day basis? the arbath looks the best the clio handles better then the ibiza, but the ibiza has more luxuries then the other two while being a little bit more grown up and look at the interior quality of the three. there's no way i could sit in that god awful cabin in the clio just look at the dash! id have fiat if it was a little bit bigger, but as its not the ibiza manages to be more practical while still being just as quick.

It's a shame they totally ignore the existence of the Renault Sport Clio 200 Full Fat (as it's been nicknamed). It adds back a lot of features they took out of the cup version, and you can still specify the cup chassis on the full-fat version if you want it to handle the same.

C'mon... Abarth 500? It's a toy car. The 2 rivals in this show are the Ibiza and Renault. I don't like french cars, because the electronic sístem went wrong in my old Clio for 5 times a year, so i've changed it to an Ibiza, and the only problem with the car were the candles... This Ibiza's biggest problem is the exterior. But i think i would buy the Ibiza for it's cost. You know what?? I would buy a BMW M5 and it will be faster than all of them! :D

@lamazver I disagree on that one, I dont think its better on track than the 500, I agree about the ibiza though, I wouldnt say its a great track car, fast, but not great for on the track. The 500's handling is superb, and the speed and 0-60 is much the same as the clio. And on top gears power lap leaderboard the 500 is above the clio, and even above the lotus elise. Its not exactly inconclusive proof, but its an identical track/driver so I think that says enough

@lamazver I have the abarth esseesse, and 0-60 takes 6.8 seconds, I've been timed about 4-5 times, and its 6.7 - 7 seconds depending how well i get the gear changes, and the fiat has 160 bhp, it only weighs just over 900 kilos so its lightness evens it up to the clio, which is a little bigger/heavier. And on top gears track the abarth is just under a second faster than the clio... I love my car, its great fun to drive, and I'd never swap to the french clio, but I like VW's too, and the ibiza :P

I just watched the Top Gear lap with the SS Fiat 500 Abarth and it was about 2 seconds slower than the old Clio 182 Cup. The new Clio 200 Cup will rape the Fiat on that track. In the german Sport Auto mag the Clio 200 Cup lapped the Hockenheim Ring in 1:19,4, the 500 Abarth SS in 1:22,4! The Fiat was 3 seconds slower on that track! Even the old 182 Cup Clio managed a low 1:21 time. Sorry, no chance at all for the Fiat. Renault is the benchmark for hot hatches. Clio and Megane FTW!

yea you can get supercharged and turbo charged, if done right it means you get overall performance throughout the revs, and then a lump of power as well, the abarth starts at 13,500 quid which is a big difference, and i too cant listen to a bloke who hasnt took the time to learn how to pronounce the name of the essesse, is 'SS' not esa esa..
