To all haters: Metallica will never cover any of Dream Theater's stuff cuz they're on a much higher level then Metallica...stop saying this cover sucks, IMO it's like the original.
I don't like Dream Theater covering stuff like this. They play it with such utter precision and concentration that the magic of it is kind of lost. This just sounds like a case of, 'lets play the son exactly as it was, and be done with it.' Whereas when played live, the song changes tone, pitch, speed, its almost improvised! That and I can't stand Dream Theater's annoying fucking frontman...
I don't know much about Dream Theater (yeah I know, sue me) but this was not a good first impression. One of the worst covers I have ever seen. I can play master better than there frontman, he couldnt even play the intro correctly.

@fierydragon777 I'm going to fully disagree with you. The point of a cover is simply to record a song that has already been written in the light of the band that is preforming it. DT's singer sings clean, Hetfield sung dirty and raw on the original. They both fit the band, that's what matters. Obviously with tweaking you can make any instrument sound exactly like the recording (or very close), but the vocals add a depth to the band and not just a copy clone of the original.
James Hetfield is nothing against James LaBrie, Kirk Hammet is a bag of Shit in front of John Petrucci, Robert Trujillo is only an ordinary mexican, against John Myung who is an extraordinary Korean, and I won't say anything about Lars Ulrich, because Mike Portnoy would pee laughing. Metallica was an amazing band.... Before

The Black Album was pretty mediocre and dry, Load/Reload were sub-par Vanilla Hard Rock records, St. Anger was a complete abomination and Death Magnetic was about as bland as Metal can get. BC&SL was a great return to form and wins handily.

LaBrie obviously can't do James Hetfield, he should have just done a completely different style, maybe some Halford-like wailing. God knows he can pull it off. I mean, since they're going so far as to add a synth, it's not really that strict a cover.
I love DreamTheater, but I really don't like James Labrie. His voice is so annoying. That's why I love the instrumental albums. Suspended Animation is one of the best albums ever imho. Also both LTEs are awesome!
DT can play and sound a lot like Metallica, even the vocals! Labrie and Hetfield has very different voices but the fact that Labrie can distort his otherwise clean and pure voice like this, is just pure talent.
Whether you like this or not, fact is that DT can play Metallica, Metallica cannot play DT!!!

you can't simply judge by watching this video because Portnoy practically covered Ulrich note for note. They are both some of the world's greatest drummers in history, end of story.
This is actually the first cover I've heard of MoP that hasn't made me want to burn down a church. They caught the essence of the song. Added in their own little stuff, without crapping on it. I would have cut out the synth, but that's their style, and they did well. All told, the only cover I like.
And I was there at the record store when this came out! So see my rockin rocking chair and shaking fist and revere me!

The Black Album was pretty mediocre and dry, Load/Reload were sub-par Vanilla Hard Rock records, St. Anger was a complete abomination and Death Magnetic was about as bland as Metal can get. BC&SL was a great return to form and wins handily.

LaBrie obviously can't do James Hetfield, he should have just done a completely different style, maybe some Halford-like wailing. God knows he can pull it off. I mean, since they're going so far as to add a synth, it's not really that strict a cover.

I love DreamTheater, but I really don't like James Labrie. His voice is so annoying. That's why I love the instrumental albums. Suspended Animation is one of the best albums ever imho. Also both LTEs are awesome!

DT can play and sound a lot like Metallica, even the vocals! Labrie and Hetfield has very different voices but the fact that Labrie can distort his otherwise clean and pure voice like this, is just pure talent.
Whether you like this or not, fact is that DT can play Metallica, Metallica cannot play DT!!!

This is actually the first cover I've heard of MoP that hasn't made me want to burn down a church. They caught the essence of the song. Added in their own little stuff, without crapping on it. I would have cut out the synth, but that's their style, and they did well. All told, the only cover I like.
And I was there at the record store when this came out! So see my rockin rocking chair and shaking fist and revere me!
