  • I first caught this clip, and the Verlaines version on ALT TV

    That channel was the shit.

I will always remember channel 65!

  • The bassist looks remarkably similar to Graeme when he lets his facial hair grow out - looks that way to me anyway.

  • It's funny that this band is from New Zealand and the bassist looks so much like Brett from FotC

  • @TheHumannBee haha

  • @TheHumannBee Chap, the bassist is the original writer of this song and creator of The Verlaines, the one and only Dr Graeme Downes

  • @TheHumannBee I don't think they're from New Zealand, nor does the bassist really look like Brett

  • @intergalacticwolf22 The Verlaines are a very famous New Zealand indie band; Flying Nun is a famous NZ record label that Malkmus/Pavement idolised.

  • This guy should be allowed/forced to sing a lot of other Australasian songs.

Can anyone upload 'Hope She's Alright' by the Instigators (think that was the band's name, Sonia Waters was the singer.

thanks for posting this. Merry Christmas

  • The waltz part is delightfully unhinged in this version.

  • i find this version better :O

  • Honestly, I feel like the song loses something with this performance. It's a little lackadaisical.

  • @revolutionaryspirit dude its stephen malkmus soooo......

    ?

  • yeah awesome perfromance of awesome song

  • Amazing. Awesome song, made better by Malkmus. Now only if I could find an MP3 of this...

  • its on 'Under the influence' the Flying Nun anniversary cd.

The whole cd is brilliant with High Dependency Unit and Tall Dwarves amongst others...

  • Hey thanks! Do you know of a way I can download this song and/or the album? I can't find it on iTunes.

  • incredible cover. I love it !!!!

  • so great

  • malkmus, you're the coolest motherfucker in the music industry. I adore you!

  • This is an amazing song. I can't believe I've never heard it. Will be checking out the Verlaines' catalog shorlty.

  • Malkmus is genius, just so much talent; I think he could have been very big if he did not recoil from the prospect; he found the perfect medium of success without fame

  • Excellent Verlaines cover! And is that footage of the Robert Burns statue in the Octagon?

  • this is great

  • i love the 'post-classic nasal drip'. thanks for introducing me to the Verlaines. i know, the order is backwards.

  • Go Stephen! This is terrific...

  • Amazing cover....kudos Mr Malkmus!!!

  • I want him inside me...

  • Haha

  • you know where i could get a download link to this track?

  • @AloneInNewPollution you slut!

  • so does the bass player lol

  • the drummer looks like Graeme downs. he lectures me

  • What a great cover!! Anyone know what type of guitar SM is playing here?

  • Ovation Breadwinner

  • sorry to bother, i also would desperately love to have this song!

  • IT IS Graeme Downes on bass. I know several people that were in the studio and saw it happening in real life. He's also playing Jane Dodd's bass guitar, no less.

The song was part of the "Under The Influence" comp in which FN bands covered other FN bands.

  • Okay, I know that I am going to get murderd for asking this: What is an "FN" band (what does it stand for)?

  • Some of the above posters used the words "Flying Nun". Need any more clues ? ;)

  • that's definitely not Graeme Downes on bass!!

  • I found this CD on Amazon. Awesome collection of bands/songs/covers. If the bass player looks like Graham Downes, it probably is. The premise was to invite the great Flying Nun acts to cover a Flying Nun song and record a new one. Everyone seems to have jammed together to get it done in a few days. Malkmus was flown in just to cover this song. Great compilation.

  • how can i get this song too?

  • i was skeptical how his cover of this song would sound but now i'm pretty sure this is one of the best covers ever

  • Wow...that's a classic video...2 of the best bands of the 80's and 90's, the Verlaines and Pavement in one song!!!!

  • iknow it's not a "singer's voice", as the NY Times recently wrote, but i love that voice, it is very re-assuring and comforting to me

  • Is Malkmus related to Flying Nun because Pavement recorded for Matador, the label many Nun's groups moved to?

    (at least i understand)

Can I get this song too? It's brilliant!

  • at the time, flying nun distributed Pavement material in NZ.

  • Am I wrong or does that bass player look a lot like

    greheme Downes?

Good stuff, up there with the original. One of my all time fave bands. The new pot boiler CD is growing on me after a few ambivalent listnings.

    Rock on- g man

  • get me this song too

  • This is ridiculously good. I've had the song for quite some time, but I had no idea that there was a video. Fantastic.

  • send meh a personal message

  • can i know where to get this song too?

  • Sent you a personal message.

  • @paulmalkmus may I have it too?

  • love ittttttt

  • I don't mean to be 'that guy', but where can I get this song?

  • Sent you a personal message.

  • excellent! I love this

  • trés bien

  • this is great; thanks

  • no prob

  • The man is a Golden God.
