Malkmus is genius, just so much talent; I think he could have been very big if he did not recoil from the prospect; he found the perfect medium of success without fame
IT IS Graeme Downes on bass. I know several people that were in the studio and saw it happening in real life. He's also playing Jane Dodd's bass guitar, no less.
The song was part of the "Under The Influence" comp in which FN bands covered other FN bands.
I found this CD on Amazon. Awesome collection of bands/songs/covers. If the bass player looks like Graham Downes, it probably is. The premise was to invite the great Flying Nun acts to cover a Flying Nun song and record a new one. Everyone seems to have jammed together to get it done in a few days. Malkmus was flown in just to cover this song. Great compilation.
Box Elder sounds a lot like this song.

I will always remember channel 65!

The bassist looks remarkably similar to Graeme when he lets his facial hair grow out - looks that way to me anyway.

It's funny that this band is from New Zealand and the bassist looks so much like Brett from FotC

@TheHumannBee Chap, the bassist is the original writer of this song and creator of The Verlaines, the one and only Dr Graeme Downes

@TheHumannBee I don't think they're from New Zealand, nor does the bassist really look like Brett
intergalacticwolf22 10 months ago
@intergalacticwolf22 The Verlaines are a very famous New Zealand indie band; Flying Nun is a famous NZ record label that Malkmus/Pavement idolised.

This guy should be allowed/forced to sing a lot of other Australasian songs.
Can anyone upload 'Hope She's Alright' by the Instigators (think that was the band's name, Sonia Waters was the singer.
thanks for posting this. Merry Christmas

The waltz part is delightfully unhinged in this version.

Honestly, I feel like the song loses something with this performance. It's a little lackadaisical.

Okay, I know that I am going to get murderd for asking this: What is an "FN" band (what does it stand for)?

Wow...that's a classic video...2 of the best bands of the 80's and 90's, the Verlaines and Pavement in one song!!!!

iknow it's not a "singer's voice", as the NY Times recently wrote, but i love that voice, it is very re-assuring and comforting to me
chrisocony 3 years ago
Is Malkmus related to Flying Nun because Pavement recorded for Matador, the label many Nun's groups moved to?
(at least i understand)
Can I get this song too? It's brilliant!

at the time, flying nun distributed Pavement material in NZ.
