Just saw Botha in a live simulcast of Aida from the MET today As Ramneri he was awesome in both his singing and acting..... sometimes awkward in movement due to his size. but facial expressions in closeups and in hia singing just superb
Oh boy, this one was so bad it was great! And I do not say it because of the singing, I think that was good. But what was this, Wizard of Oz, plus C3PO + an AT-AT and a deinflating Turandot inside Chaplin's factory? Creativity they did not lack :) I prefer more realism, but this one was a lot of fun to watch
Thank you for the comment, but I can't say that I love him.. Too lyric for me (especially as calaf!), to much "mixed" voice. I prefer the other type of techniqe, like Bonisolli, Giacomini, Martinucci...
Also I don't find him emotional enough as musician... Calaf is a hero, not a bird :)
From your comments I understand you have never heard Botha live.
I have had the chance to hear him numerous times in Germany or NYC and the voice is enormous! I heard his Otello in Germany last year with a notoriously loud conductor and Botha was the only one on stage booming across the gigantic hall with a sound that left the crowd gasping. I mean, I know a big voice when I hear one, believe me.
He sings with a lyric line as every singer should, but the recordings show nothing of his sound!
Ja, agree, I find him better suited for Wagnerian characters. He should steer clear of verisimo, it's not for the subtle. His Morgenlich is just great.
Well, he can sing but his acting... Embarrasing to look at him. He is a studio and concert singer. Opera on stage are more than beautiful singing isn´t it???
Oh, esto está en español!! buenísimo!!!uh...tengo un montón de videos para ver en tu canal y muy poco tiempo...cuando pueda me paso :)

You think THIS is bad ..... watch the entire dvd and hear that horrible new ending to Turandot de-composed by Berio. God awful.

The face he's making at 4:11 is the same face I'm making to Schnaut's voice here. She's had much better outings for sure.

I'm more impressed with the production itself than anyone singing

Ja, this is really something. To the producers and designers, bravi!

Thanks for posting. Not a big fan of Gabriele, but I love Botha. Hard to find a heldon with such a brilliant sound and great technique.
