The Gift of Tongues

Sometimes when I speak in tongues I Feel like I'm not. I know that is just the devil trying to put doubt in my spirit. Do you get attacked like this? I only been speaking in tongues for a short time.

The evidence that you ARE speaking in tongues is that you are edified when doing so....1 Corinthians 14:4: Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves.....

Singing and praying in the Spirit is where I started on this path one September Indian Summer day when all by myself. The modern day phrase, "in the Spirit," however is biblically distinguishable and deserves close inspection. See my video "The Gift of Tongues (Heavenly Prayer Languages) here on YouTube. i recieved the gift of tongues in one day..

iv'e recieved the holy spirit/born again but knew nothing about it until i actually seen a movie, but was so fasinated with it that i started researching. Once i got the biblical understanding on it i prayed for the gift of tongues (because it's already our birth right, he expects us to speak in it. it just depends on your Faith) and i DEMANDED my spirits to speak in other tongues then i just spoke but i automaticly knew it wasnt just some jiberish

Some of the clarifying scriptures would be:

1 Corinthians 12:10b....to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a] and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b]

1 Corinthians 14:13......For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says.

You said speaking in tongues is a way for your spirit to express to God with words that you yourself can't come up with. But your interepratation after your song is pretty simple, I have those words in my vocabulary. So why not speak in your native tongue?

With regards to this answer....

When we communicate with God in the richness of His own language we can express much more than we can in our own native language. This you rightly pointed out with the words used in the interpretation on the video.

The important thing to take note of is that the words in my language are an INTERPRETATION and not a TRANSLATION. What I am saying in my own language is a 'sense' of what I was expressing in God's language.

When you look @ verse 5 Paul said he would rather have everyone prophesy. He who phrophesies is greater than one who speaks in tongues, unless he iterprets, so that the church may be edified. The reason for the gifts is for the church to be edified. And if one can not understand how can one be edified?

Have I been speaking in tongues, when I'm alone and in worship, but what good does it do anyone if it's not understood? I love languages, but I speak only one, English. Again Gifts from God are not anything we have power over, they are from a power on high beyond us, but it's God working thru us, doing HIS WILL, right? I'm not arguing with you are God, I like many want truth, but tongues are an issue badly misunderstood in my understanding, but I am listening brother, willing to learn...

Continuing, Paul teaches us from God's word that there are many other gifts that are, more important then that of tongues, I've seen so much false stuff in the years it's sad. Gifts for God are just that, gift, they can not be practiced, ( my view ) did the apostles practice their gifts, healing was healing, it was instant, not falling on the floor flop'n around like fish out of water. If I've nothing that words can define, I am quiet, and let my heart fill and pour out in praise and speak AMEN

In public, the person speaking in tongues should also seek God for the interpretation of what he/she says. The tongues and the interpretation then become a means through which God can bring His prophetic word to build up all who can hear.

Greetings Bro Stanway, Blessings to you from OUR GOD ON HIGH. I found this quite interesting, thru the years I've yet to hear authenitic tongues or it's use in the Church that truly edifies or is of Truth, that being said, when I heard you sing in tongues, I found I've been doing this for years, but I thought I was only making up words, only because I didn't have an english one, meaning hearing many different languages thru the years, I picked up on bits and pieces and made up the rest.

Yes, tongues and their interpretation are often misunderstood and sometimes abused.

The test for the person who is speaking in tongues is to ask themselves after speaking for a prolonged period (more than 10 minutes), has this built me up in my spirit-man, am I edified?

For this is the principal purpose of speaking in tongues privately........

Acts 10:46 " For they heard them speaking in other tongues and praising God."

You will note that it say OTHER tongues, i.e. foreign languages the better to spread the word, not gibberish that no-one else understands. You could not carry on a converstion in that langusge, and another SiT's could not translate the words, so it is not the language of god. Surely god should speak plainly to his people not in code. Either you are fooling yourself, or you are a conman.

I never was a christian, I was lucky enough not to have been indoctrinated. I have read the bible cover to cover. If it was the word of god, why did it not inspire me to believe? If the bible was gods word it would be unambiguous, not subject to different interpretations, relevent to all races and times, be proveable by outside means and not confine it'self to the history of a desert tirbe in one small part of the middle east.

Thank you for your positive comments. The personal use of tongues is to 'edify the speaker'. Using tongues will sharpen your spiritual ears to clearly hear God's strategy for prayer. When confronting 'spiritual forces of wickedness' it is best to use your native language.
