  • very melodic beautiful piece, inspiring, played with feeling; first class performance.

  • here i am, here i am, here i am

  • Everyone is going to have thier favorites. I've heard this piece played countless times by different players for decades and I like this version the best. HIs lush pacing seems a perfect fit for this peiece.

I've heard many other fine performances, but some seem a bit rushed while others goin the opposite direction and seem too slow. Russel's version leaves me feeling I got the most out of this work.

  • I prefer berta rojas version... on youtube

  • i don't know.. i don't like russell playing barrios

  • this piece is very difficult to play. Demanding in a musical way. Any good classical guitarist can play "the notes", it's not that hard, but the rhythm... especially, the constant rubato.... that's another question. I personally prefer William's version, but this is one is also flawless. Great guitarist.

  • as is beautiful and well played.

  • david russel is so expressive, much more so than Williams and many others this is why I prefer him.

  • Que impecable es la técnica de Russell.

  • HE USED VERY GOOD THE RUBATO.... THAT GIVES MORE EMOTIONAL DEPTH....

  • Does anyone know a site where i can get classical songs like these?

  • @PeaceSells102 delcamp.us

  • @PeaceSells102 classtab.org

  • the best version of this song I think..

  • Some good parts in there. I'd name them but it's like "Measre five, beat 2.5" so I'll just say good!

  • Russell is great but this piece was supposed to be a "barcarola", that is, have a ternary rhythm, a fact that other performers seem to ignore, too.

  • russel has never been one of my favorites, but one must respect everyones taste. since some dude has removed sölscher's "julia florida" from youtube, i recommend berta rojas rendition. as for me, certainly the best

  • @piquedard yeah, Berta's Barrios interpretations are really good.

  • Made me cry :(

  • I'm sure I'd much rather hear your version...

  • lol i always laugh at when people give me bad ratings because they think I am completely insulting the player. I stand by the fact that i don't like the interpretation. I find it lacks flow. And I still think there is something wrong with him intonation.

  • "his" intonation, but I will say that he is a great player and performer.

  • Can someone tell me in which year this piece was written please??

  • it was written in Costa Rica, 1938.-

  • thank you very much..

  • id love to see williams' interpretation of this piece

  • Since when has Williams interpreted anything?

  • look at me I'm opinionated

  • HAHAHAHAHA OMG I LOVE YOU.

  • thanks sweetheart...love you too

  • Its really ridiculous to say that, Williams its a great player as many others, people think interpretation is moving your face o else? but yes he is very technical, but he has great technique and is one of the player that doesn't have to fight the guitar, I saw him in Puerto Rico and its not the same as seeing him in video, and you learn a lot from different people, I'm a classical guitar student at the university

  • Music has no class nor social status. It's THE universal language. If you can't sit back and just enjoy the music, then I hope you have an interesting life with your narrow attitude towards music.

  • Beautiful. It's one of my favourite songs on the classical guitar.

  • David Russel creates a gold standard...truly beautiful!

  • chopins berceuse in d-flat major has a similar pattern in the bass that kinda reminds me of julias main theme

  • And, similar melody to Moulin Rouge of Georges Auric

  • Best version ever!

  • You mean you haven't listened at Göran Söllcher's!

    /Dard

  • Hmm, never heard of it.

    I'll check it out dude.

  • Russell's is better.

  • Why do people associate guitar music with swank looking rooms full of aristocratic looking crap?

Guitar is historically the instrument of the poor man!!

  • Because they played for Kings & Queens

  • You are very wrong.

  • Too bad eirinikos, the guitar is now something that even rich people buy.

Visą tai, ką daro David'as, - natūralu. Dėkoju,su pagarba bei meile iš Lietuvos. Simonas.

  • actually i prefer göran söllcher's interpretation!

  • Does anyone but me hate the comparisons game? I don't mean the commentaries about varying interpretations, but the simplistic 'he's better, she's better' nonsense, especially when it involves sports metaphors. Russell is a genius, but other people also have something to say about this piece.

  • @gergthims Yes, exactly, we shouldnt make an argument about music. Music is for listening, and enjoying. Who cares who is best, i care that he plays the piece and it is beautiful. Even if someone can play better, what does it matter, and what does it accomplish.

  • DAVID YOU ARE AMAZING!!

  • how do you like it shokola

    adil

  • its wonderful, I loved it Adil :) thanks alot..

  • You're right!

  • This might be the best piece that Barrios wrote!

  • choro de saudade or vals

  • this is the way to play this piece, one of the best i've heard

  • beautiful! A.Barrios is one of my favorite composers and Russel plays it perfect

  • This is by far the best interpretation of this piece that i've heard to date! Davids at the top of his game, and everybody just can't catch up!

  • I personal like the normal performance: slow and light, maybe more profound but he played this piece like bring the melody up and drop it down softly, very less affection

  • ok after watching pretty much every performance of this on youtube, this one is by far my favourite

seems i clearly dont understand how to enjoy this piece... wait nevermind, fuck all you elitist snobs

  • I must say that Jason Vieux's interpretation is superb. However, Russell's version touches me more deeply.

  • In Vieaux's dreams, he can play half as well as David Russell.

  • YES!!! i totally agree oneginee!!

this is a freaking romantic piece!!! sigh...

Maybe i must post a video of myself playing it since I`m studying this piece at the moment...

I know I`m far worse than this guy but at least i know that this is a romantic piece!!

  • oh another thing, Anyone can post their opinions but

Please stop swearing to each other. It`s shows one`s own immatureness.

  • God I hate classical snobs so much, perhaps you may like to hear the piece performed a different way, whatever, but don't outright bash the guy for interpreting a piece his own way. Personally I think this is my favorite performance of this piece.

  • well i thought all the time, that someone who makes music, can be a bad man and can insault other people. shame on you prosaic men

  • Just beautiful in every respect.

  • The Complete Works of Agustin Barrios Mangore

Mel Bay Publications, Vol 1 p.210 - 213. Aware of other sources of Barriios sheet music - a lot of mistakes,

    odd interpretations etc.

  • oneginee, you're sooooooooo stupid. you're a big fan of yourself. go shove your so called "musical supremacy" up your constipated shithole. just play some metal music if your so full of hate. GodBless

  • mr arogant parrot ou blocked me ? lol. who cares. lol. Read the thread back and see who insulted first. I take no shit from idiots like that user. Everybody should be able to express their opinion. Now you can stick your self-righteous hat up your aXX.

Solamente.

  • oneginee, your a retard. you call yourself a music critic or an artist? then post your version of julia florida, dumbass. i'll tell you something you shitt head, it's called RUBATO. go look it up, you have no sense of musicality.

  • listen you fucktard. I said "I DON'T LIKE and I HATE it" expressing my own opinion. You retarded pig brain anwered by insult and tried to sound like a condescending smart ass. little fuck. FYI I have a bigger classical repertoire under my fingers than live music you've probably ever heard live and that includes all of Chopin Nocturnes on the piano from Op 9 to Op. 72. Now you moron go use your time otherwise because you don't know shit about music.

  • me 2 dude I know all those peices and probably more than U :) i dont disasgree with u tho :D peace bro hit me up with a reply if you want ^___________________^

  • I DON'T LIKE HIS sudden stopping of the meter on some notes. It does not work. nice tone. bad dynamics. very bad rythm. he just kills the poesie in this song by breaking the flow all the time. I HATE it. Sounds like he got bored with the piece.

  • oneginee, please, stop writing no matter what, letting know us that you are out of competence to understand what is music and musicality. You must have a metronome in the heart, letting you know when you have to love...

  • Jive51, please stop letting people know what you would like them to do on basis that you hold the unbreakable truth and that anyone who doesn't agree is an ignorant. arogant fool. I know when I hear a poor musical performance and this is one. He plays Julia Florida as if it was some kind of galant style comp. with trite emotionalism. This is a pure romantic piece for heaven's sake.

  • damn ... why did you learn that stuf.. it's not werry spacial but it's hard to learn it ...you can learn some songs of tommy emmanuel... in that song is someone dieing???? but afterall its good

  • This is beautiful. I find certain pieces that I like better played by Jason Vieaux. This is one. Unfortunately, not on YouTube. Vieaux also plays the very best Albeniz (if you love classical guitar, you must have his album 'Sevilla'). Russell and Vieaux are my all-time favorites.

  • With that tuxedo , better be a waitress !!!

  • Tremendous tone color and technique. My favorite classical guitarist along with his friend Manuel Barrueco. Agree with John williams Barrios is the best

classical guitar composer (along with Heitor Villa Lobos). Too bad radio station WQXR New York city doesn't play these composers often enough!

  • touchingly beautiful.

  • Beautiful!, llego al corazón... Solo Barrios!!! thanks for share this amazing video.

  • His recordings of Barrios are the most beautiful examples of guitar playing I've heard-Thanks!

  • Nice, Russell its my second favorite classical guitarrist

  • Who's your favorite?

  • Manuel Barrueco, I think he is as famous as John Williams, Ive never heard the Bach lute suites played so lively and energetic!

  • he is an ogro. the ogro of guitar.

  • This is poetic, Barrios es amazing... so sincere in his feelings. He is like Chopin on the guitar.. I just have no words of... how this piece goes sweetely direct to your feelings and makes you cry.

  • David Russell is an amazing guitarist and easily in the top 5 players right now, Bravo!
