In the end "religion" merely means belief, i.e. what one believes in. We should at least have that much freedom (to choose in what we either believe in - often either blindly or due to religious doctrine - or prefer to have been proved to us). And if a God does exist then he/she/it can choose to expose him/her/itself... but, chooses not to. We are left to believe what we want, or wait for real evidence.

Sagan was an agnostic, not an atheist. There's a big difference ;)
