the way i always saw it (and yes i was there) duran duran appealed to girls and japan was for real music fans. it doesn't matter at all really though, music is an art form and is therefore purely subjective. just because i prefer japan to dd doesn't make everyone else wrong. it was always duran versus spandau ballet anyway japan weren't as commercial as them
@zendoking Come on!!! Are you kidding? Have you Heard songs such as Psalm or For your pleasure? The slow and deep intonation is tremendously influenced by Roxy Music; in any case; Ghosts is a great song and Roxy Music are the masters; I am always in favor of good music!
Very influenced by Bryan Ferry & Roxy Music, sometimes I think I 'm hearing one of Roxy's songs; however, it's a nice and deep song; hope people from today were following the line of the masters!
classic 80's,...30 years ago where's it gone. japan & duran's only likeness was the makeup & hairstyles and it ends there.....both good bands in there own respects, just seen duran duran at the m.e.n arena & they was bloody superb.
Personally I liked funk at the time of this release, there is a hot debate as to who is best, Duran sold big time, but you just have to admit this is a real cool song, a delicate sound that is quite haunting, who cares who sold more, David lived the life & got the T-shirt, I hope he is well, great song Dave
why do you always have to compare them to Japan? Why could you never admit Japan did influence them? They have said it themselves, big deal. I like Japan more but to each his own.
They were at # 42 when this got played on TOTP, usually the song has to be in the top 40 to qualify, tho I seem to recall they BBC would go outside the top 40 if there were not enough new records that had risen within the top 40. So we are fortunate that such a great song which was bubbling under the charts got on the show and so found a wider audience.
@roxette2 It was the other way around actually. I have read articles where Duran Duran say they were largely influenced by the early Japn stuff and based there image on Sylvian and Roxy Music also.
@Evilrolfharris i think both davy sylvian and nick rhodes were equally inspired in style by andy warhol. nick rhodes went in so many tangents on style and it is nothing short of incredible for japan fans to compare the two. nick rhodes is a key board player? japan were heavily influenced with the suit thing by roxy music and both visually and sonically. all artists have their source/s and duran duran and japans are similar.
@gregingram1970 I'm surprised you're not getting into one of your trolling Japan hate tangents again as you have done for the past several years, good work greg!
@paintedship god i am equally surprised you havent verbally attacked with your obligitory anti duran duran - japan are super gods - kinda ranting that is psychotic.
@paintedship as for hating japan, that has never been the case. its more like japan fans have pushed me towards seeking negative criticisms on japan and you know what? you find a lot of needles in a haystack when you look hard enough. that said, japan are superb - even if it was for just two albums.
@gregingram1970 I like every Japan album. DD's catalog though, first 2 are great, 3 is kind of cheesy but a few good songs. The rest are kind of unlistenable overall. Their new one isn't so bad though.
@paintedship I think duran duran havent proudced a bad album yet. I can think of some superb tracks on every album. indeed, some of the best tracks have came from albums other than their first two - american science/vertigo/winter marches on (notorous); land/palimino/do you believe in shame? (big thing); oridnary world/come undone (wedding album); watching the detectives/lay lady lay (covers album - thank you); finest hour (astronaut); runway runaway/girl panic/the man who stole a leopard?AYNIN
@paintedship i would add, that duran duran have evolved sonically and improved in their material on their last album. It goes without saying but duran duran have sold literally millions upon millions more than japan. i understand your arguemtn about less commercial/more artisitic blah,,,but duran duran are and have been consistently much better than japan. their longevity is evidence.
I too can clearly remember watching TOTP when this came on, and subsequently blame it (and the album) for failing two GCE O levels as I decided to play it constantly instead of revising for nearly a whole year!
victoria - I think mine said the same. And a few years later my stepdad said, after culture club made their debut on TOTP, "well, she's got a strong voice!"
Yes. Great ring modulation and sounds from the P5 plus Richard also playing some OBx plus Jansen's drumming, Simmons SDS 5(?). Here is is playing vibes/marimba. Sadly used P5's still cost over $3 grand.
I know he'd totally hate this from watching and reading interviews, but he's sooooooooooooooooooooo hooooooooooooottttttttttttttttttttt, the voicemakes him hotter. *teenage girls out*
What a great tune, forgotten how good this track was. I was 18 and used to have hair just like that. There is not so much of it now and it is a different colour
His voice gives me thrills! I'm completely in love with it and this song! THIS is why I sometimes wish I'd lived in the 80's - so much great synthpop!
I remember seeing this at the time, and the moment it finished, my mum declared - 'Well, THAT was a right load of rubbish!' What better endorsement of a band could a 14-year-old wish for?
@victorialucas38 when johnny rotten was on that duke box jury with noel edmunds all his "outrageous comments" were said word for word by my mum just before he said them as in "what did you think of donna summer s bad boys johnny?" then my mum "not much" then "johnny rotten "not much" every time, and my mum and johnny were in fact right , she also though noel edmunds should be shot

Why are people comparing Duran Duran to Japan?
Their music bears no resemblance at all.
Compare Cantonese Boy and Visions of China to The Reflex and Please, Please tell me now - No similarities whatsoever!
Selling millions of albums is often really a result of commercial marketing and is just not a true reflection of musical talent and creativity

@aberfal1 Exactly, we're here to listen to Japan are we not? I'll pop over to a DD video if I fancy listening to them, simple as.
