After listening to this one, the Buddy, Simon, and Buddy/Simon versions are too sleepy slow for me, this song just FLIES LIKE A JET, not like a prop job. Wow.
@MrPelicanPants Really? His was the worst by far in my opinion. I know alot of people felt that he didnt fit in with this kind of music and I agree. Simon is a basher
@antibulletdodger101 Oh I agree Simon doesn't really belong in the music, but that was half the reason why Neil chose the drummers he did for the Burning For Buddy project. Simon added a different element to the song that I honestly prefer. It clearly doesn't swing, but for that song I think it works better. I'm probably biased though too since his was the first version I'd ever heard. ;) I fully admit that lol!
@antibulletdodger101 .......Simon a basher?.....when needed, sure.....Listen to PSP or Vantage Point.......it's dynamics and finesse.......I was at this show and it was for drummers....Dennis played it 1/2 hartedly IMO.....he got the basics and played whatever he could fit in.......not my cup of tea................gave this another listen after listening to Buddy and Simon...............as great as Dennis, which he is....I would never search out his playing.
Stop with the comparisons already! Every pro drummer has a similar but different approach to covering a tune. Just leave it at that! And just because buddy rich was arguably the greates drummer of all time doesn't make him the greatest of all time
This whole concert was about drumming which is why the drummers are out at the front. You don;t go to a drum clinic to watch drummers 'play for the song.'
i love dennis chambers and the kind of stuff he is playing here is undoubtebly some of the most technically challenging stuff known ..however it's simply too much for the song..buddy didnt need to play that he just grooved so dennis could learn from that..just play the groove until the solo section..
I don't even play drums and my brain just exploded.

In my estimation, DC is not a bona fide Jazz player. His roots are steeped in Funk + Fusion.
Notice how he fails to properly set-up the band throughout the composition.
Alternately, his BeBop + Swing are marginal at best. Nevertheless, a powerhouse, force of nature and a joy to behold.

Personally I think Simon Phillips' performance is far superior.

Dennis tears this tune up! As great as Buddy was, Dennis employs the kick and toms to a far greater degree. Stunning speed and great solo!

Yep. Part of being a good drummer is knowing when to pull back. He's clobbering the song
