I remember my beatnik parents in Wisconsin soaking reeds to make baskets. I live in France now and basket makers are called "vanniers" and are often itinerant peoples. It is considered honest, useful work and I bought a Provençale basket in 2010 down South and was lucky to get it for 30 euros I think, came lined and all. People still use baskets in a lot of Europe for their daily shopping. I use mine for storing small supplies. Baskets rock! Uprated.
