you can't really say there's a best guitarist but I'd if there was one I'd go with Jimi personally. he simply had a perfect sense of phrasing, he was one with his guitar because he lived with it ever since he got his first one at the age of 15, his income was dependent on him backing musicians and he was everywhere from Cali to Canada. why else is there no convincing Hendrix clone...nobody can play rhythm and lead like the does it, both at the same time. check killing floor.

usually when people throw around the term better technique, they're more inclined to focus on lead playing. yet its Jimi's baffling rhythmic chops that separate from the rest, his lead playing is largely chordal which allows Jimi to play rhythm and lead simultaneously which is so difficult to master let alone while singing. he may have the most emotive phrasing ever, his generic versatility, Hendrix may be the most complete player. only a very select few rank with him.
