so yes he's not the best guitarist out there, but I really think he tried hard and it took effort and perseverance to learn such a long, complicated and intricate solo. It takesballs to put your video up on here to allow yourself to be criticised by some quite frankly short sighted people who were once beginners/intermediate players.
@lostlemming Hi, Thanks for your comments. I actually tried to play this with "anger" to try and focus myself fully on the solo - maybe that's not the best way to capture the correct emotion of the original version! I also hope my "poor" version helps demonstrate just how difficult this is to play well and why it still remains such a brilliant original solo even after so many years since Hotel California was released.
Man, you're great, but you should work on your bends, because sometimes you don't go as high it should be. But that's already cool, and you've got 3 beautiful guitars!
@sowast I Also have a roland micro cube and while it's a great amp, with many features and effects, it just cant sound like an actual tube amp. I have a marshall tube amp and believe me it has a sound that the roland cant ever dream about !! My gibson LP sounds nice through the roland, but it sounds like god speaking to your ear when i plug it in the marshall amp... The same goes for my yamaha pacifica, my fender, and all 8 of my guitars! keep on rockin!!!
@3jimbo Hi. I agree totally. A MicroCube does not really create a sound in the same league as a real valve amplifier. But the MicroCube is brilliant for what it is designed to do - i.e. small, cheap, low-volume practice amplifier. I find It's good enough for me to practice at home with. If there is a better amplifier of this size then I would like to try it out. Now I'm really itching to get back in the studio to play through a "proper" amp again! I usually use a Fender Hotrod Delux.
@sowast lol i didnt make the choice it was chosen for me while I was in school it was my 1st guitar Ive stuck with it for 2 years and will never get rid of it
@sowast No worries mate, and thank you for the compliment, I will have to reupload mine with a better cam within a couple weeks, I'll sub to you, I'd like to keep up with a fellow prs se players' guitaring.
@BlueRiff Thanks for your comments. Obviously this is an adaptation of the solo to allow a single guitar to play it all. As the original was done by multiple guitars it is certainly interesting to hear different peoples views on what they think works best with just one guitar. Personally I think the version on the Strat sonds best - but then next week I'll change my mind!
first thing is get another guitar for that! second is that you have to work on your tones again so that it will sound cleaner and slow down a bit at the part around minute 2. I guess you just need to train it some more and you should try to get a feeling for it so you will hear it when the tones are a little "dirty"
Hi. Check out my other versions of this where I play it on a Les Paul and a Stratocaster. I think you have spotted the whole point of my video!! - i.e different guitars/tones suit the solo differently. Thanks for your comments.
Hey! I am considerably younger than many players. Now remember this kids: The longer you play the better you get - NEVER quit playing or you will one day regret it. You can ONLY get better with time. I'll keep at it until I'm too old to pick the guitar up!
Totally agree with you there. I took up guitar at the age of 22, you're never too old to follow your aspirations! Keep working on it and your musical voice will shine through.
@UFOTheHunter2 I love the way a 17 year old slipknot fan like yourself can come on here and patronise an older person. Turn it in you little shit. On the video, i give 4*'s, the playing was good but the tone on that amp isn't very nice. Good job though matey.
Thanks for the support philbertfwog. And I agree about the tone on this version. I used the "R-FIER" model on the Roland Micro-Cube amp; Would have been better to use something more similar to the original. Please check out my other two versions of the solo. Cheers.
That paint job is actually pretty nice. I've got the SE single cut in tobacco sunburst and this one looks just as nice or nicer. Hm, might throw some locking tuners and pickups on one of these non-SC guitars one day.
Bro, I went and I tried to stay away from a Burst colored PRS, because I am sick of seeing them at my friends. Don't get me wrong I love it, but I'm just so used to seeing it, but I saw one at GC and I fell in love with it. It has one of the most beautiful Sunbursts I've seen.
Hey you should try bending with more than 1 finger like maybe 3 to have better control cos so how far your bends are a bit weak and you can control much better with 3 fingers
Hi, thanks for the advice. I have tried what you suggest, but it did not seem to help. I am now really strugggling reaching the notes and am finding the bends impossible.
Here we are, the new Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck and the JB in the bridge. The JB is the best thing that could happen to my guitar, I love the clean of it, it kinda has more personnality, but I mainly love it for the distortion. The stock pickup wasn't enough. It stays very versatile tho.
For the Jazz pu, the cleans are simply beautiful, but i'm not sure about the distortion. It gets kinda messy, but the fuzz sounds perfect. Not as versatile as the stock. The neck stock is really good.
Good effort my friend! I also have one of these guitars in grey / black and coincidently enough I am changing out the pick-ups as well! I am changing out for chrome p/u's because I want the guitar to have that classic look . I play in a covers band and this guitar is really versatile - I have been playing in bands for 19 years - I would recommend these guitars to anyone - but I would also recommend you get it professionally set up - as I had to. Try out one if you get a chance though!!!
hey man you`re bends are week and so is your picking, try using you`re middle and index finger when benindg, it will be different at first after a while it will make you sound better and it will be easy to bend, and you should putting more vabrato into your playing, it sounds really bland
Hi MisterGuitarD - I'm afaid I had to translate your question in Google as I don't speak Italian! - I got the tab from a 10 year old old Guitar magazine.
Hey, I was wondering; I am SERIOUSLY considering buying this guitar and I was wondering if I could ask you a question. I am a guy with versatile musical tastes and thus I like to play a lot of genres of music on guitar. I was wondering if you could tell me how good this guitar sounds with each of the following styles:
Hi, It is a very good all-rounder. I would definitely recommend it for rock, blues and punk. It is probably fine for jazz/funk. For metal you might want to consider getting the version with trem and then upgrade pickups. I actually got mine to use as a lightweight substitute for my Les Paul.
No mods made at all. The strings it came with were rubbish i.e. strange gauges with lighter high E but heavy low E - Would not stay in tune with them. I use EnrieBall 10-46 and It plays well and it stays in tune. I had thought about locking tuners but it really does not need them
Hey there, I got this guitar actually, you can look up my videos to get an idea. I mostly play metal and yeah, I'm about to change the pickups for some Seymour Duncan. But it is really versatile! It is very confortable.
Well I like them too, but they don't give me the agressive attack I want with the bridge humbucker, I mostly play metal (metalcore). I love the feel of the guitar and I want to play the music I love the most. So the JB from seymour duncan is my choice and the Jazz in the neck will sing the clean parts. Lol also a question of look, I want the pickups to be black. My PRS is tobacco sunburst, wich is kinda rare.
Yeah, that makes sense. I guess you are finding the stock pickups a little too smooth for your kind of music. The SD JB may have more bite - Let me know if they are a sucessful change.
I'd think the JB would be too hot. That's good if you're always playing heavy stuff but this pick up sounds pretty sterile when clean. It just depends on what you're after. I prefer alnico II pro's over a JB/Jazz combo for sure but that's just me.
BTW, Nice playing-keep it up, keep practicing diatonic scales, chromatics and pents and you'll improve big time, and remember to have fun cuz that's the point of it all. Right?
Hi, thanks for comments on my playing. Yes I must spend more time on those diatonics and chromatics - I seem to just do the pentatonics all the time. I'm going to keep my pickups stock on this guitar.
I was wondering if you could give me some advice on whether to buy the Epiphone Les Paul or the PRS SE Custom(seeing that you have both and I know that you have a Gibson instead of Epiphone). I was just wondering on your opinion which one i should get. I play rock, but no specific genre of rock (from like Stairway to Heaven to Metallica). Thanks.
Hello, they are both very suitable for rock. But you really have to try them both out yourself and choose the one that feels and sounds right for YOU. If you need a wammy bar then the Les Paul is ruled out but the PRS can be fixed tail (like mine) or floating trem (like a stratocaster).
The reason I got mine was that I wanted a fixed tail guitar with humbuckers, thats very easy to play and is a lot lighter than my Gibson. The PRS SE delivers all that and it also looks fantastic.
Hi, no the attack is slightly softer than my Les Paul Studio. I think it is quite smooth sounding - This video gives the impression that it is more aggressive than it really is.
Hi, yes the PRS SE custom is absolutely perfect for rock - which is what I bought it for! I mostly play classic rock such as this vid. Not sure about its suitability for shred/metal type stuff as I don't play any. I have tried the semi and it is just as good as the solid - but as I already own a Rickenbacker (350 triple pickup) it was not what I was after.
i need to support ur ring finger with the other fingers .... so u can have enough strenght while bending . And add some vibratos so u can get more emotion to the solo !
Yes, you are right. I am my own worst critic and I can see these faults. I will certainly take these sugessions onboard to try and improve my technigue. Thanks for your comments.
I think I've been playing too long to change my style now! Problem with being self-taught I guess.
Actually one problem with this solo on this guitar, is that the extreme bends at about the 14th fret cause the output to drop noticably when the string moves away from the pickup pole. This does not seem to happen when I play this on my Les Paul.
I think it's never too late to improve - although it can be painful. I think it's just too hard to get a full tone bending or more with just the ring finger. I'm just giving you my opinion - hope you don't mind! I remember practicing bendings and vibratos for weeks straight, and it was boring, but I think it's worth the effort. Rock on!
