@DontLookAtTheTurtle - That's because Nick's own car ( F 512 S # 7 ) appeared in that movie , It was destroyed during the film but it was restored afterwards ...btw that crash scene is missing in these videos
I picked this up on Blu-Ray w/Papillon a week ago (stoked it's on blu now!!). Came home & started watching Le Mans. My girlfriend was nice enough to watch this one with me. @ 3:55 on this clip, she flipped & said: "Holy shit. That song makes me wanna drive fast! I want to drive to this fucking song! I have to get this song!" She found it on iTunes not long after we watched the movie. She's a badass to me now for not only liking the song but seriously enjoying the movie too. I'm definitely lucky!
half of that crazy sound from the Porsche flat 12 comes from the engine cooling fan perched on top of the engine. you will notice the Ferrari 5.0 v12 sounds nothing like that. it could also be the heads on the Porsche...hemispherical chamber with 2 valve per cyl. The Ferrari is more modern, 4 valves per cylinder arrangement.
@buschracing1 Absolutely right about the two valve hemi head against a 4 valve pentroof cmbustion chamber, it is also the fact the porsche is air cooled and a 12; if you listen to the factory BSA/Triumph Triple racebikes of the same era they were 2 valve air cooled hemis reving to 8,500 rpm and they have an exhaust note very similar in tone.
I always listen for the birdsong at 1:26. Those cops at the track's edge sure pulled a plumb job. Few finer sights in all of motor racing than 1970 917's, especially Vic Elford's longtail, coming towards the camera.
I watched this movie the other night and have to say it may have no dialog but sometimes just good editing and a camera can tall a story itself that way. I mean the various camera angles in this movie are incredible and I heard they shot all 24 hours of the race!!!
You ruined the song and the scenes that go with it with that stupid editing. I'm sorry but that was meant to be with the song in it which perfectly suits the scene...
@CrashBandikoot7 Not who are we following but what: We are following an art form perfected. When we watch this film, we should ask, can this art (automobile racing) be made any more beautiful than this? There are those who would argue (I am one) that these cars, at this track, at that time was as beautiful as this sport can be made. Auto racing can be made more expensive, more technical, even faster, but it is hard to imagine how it can be more beautiful. The medium has been perfected.
@gurlsingerfan Oh, I totally agree with you friend. But I figured since it's a movie, there should be characters at least, no? This is basically just watching a Le Manns race that was shot very nicely.
@CrashBandikoot7 There actually is a central character (other than the Porsche 917), the character played by Steve McQueen. Who said "there is only racing, all else is waiting."? McQueen doesn't say a lot in the film, but he doesn't really have to, his face and body language conveys so much and he "waits" better than anyone. A critic once said of McQueen in the movie "Bullitt", "he has the uncanny ability to seem both totally on the edge and totally relaxed at the same time" same in Le Mans.
@gurlsingerfan Yeah thats who I was looking for in this video, but didn't see. Not even a glimpse. That final Bullitt chase scene looked serious. But these movies are all not from my generation.
@AphxTwn666 Yes... my suggestion would be to netflix the movie.. or basically get a copy. Every car nut I know has a copy of this movie...to their library collection.
@AphxTwn666 You can find the movie for 11.00 dollars at Amazon.com or even Blue Ray. Its worth the money. Hell I watch this movie like 3 times before the Le Mans race comes to TV. Another good movie is Gran Prix... another awesome Classic that is about F1.... another must have.
beautiful job of editing. I'm glad there's another person in the world who hates those who muck up close up racing with voice and weak plots. Lap 2 with the music is tolerable .. at least its not hard rock. The film managed to break 2 or 3 film companies, as i understand it. With the greatest humility possible, MIGHT i suggest that the long tail's exit from its first pit stop, may be the most beautiful sound in the whole film. Beautiful Job, seriously.
i love the rivalry between the Ferrari 512s and the Porsche 917s in this movies.0:00-9:00.i love these classic car movies like Grand Prix,Smokey and the Bandit,Cannonball 1 and 2 and Dukes of Hazzard
It's a shame that Van Lennep en Markko lost the record. I don't like the Audi's or Peugeot. At least Aston is trying to make an efford to look like a Porsche 917.
I could happily watch this film every time there is a "Grand Prix" on the TV. The muscular sound of the fabulous Porsche 917 is just music to my ears, the cars twitch about, the whole thing is just magnificent. I remember watching some of the 1970 race on TV and being stunned at the speed of the top cars on the Mulsanne. Motor racing is just so anaemic today. Thank God for yesteryear
@MJPO1000 what is anemic and i wish i could have been alive to watch the older ones ha but im just starting to get into this gran prix stuff so im still new. only 14 by the way
I haven't seen every racing movie ever made, but of those I've seen, this one has by far the best race sequences. You do feel like you're right there. Better than almost than live coverage. Thanks for sharing this. One of my favorite movies ever.
The sound of absolute power at 3:35 that 917 longtail is BAD ASS!! the Ferrari 512 is sweet to.. gotta love the classic rawness of this film. modern cars just do not sound the same.
Although Stommelen was the first to break 350 km/h top speed the year before - both with the same co-driver though, who retired shortly after this with hardly anyone remembering him at all.
I've always had a soft spot for him though, because he drove Frank Costin's wooden chassis Protos F2 car, as did - Vic Elford! It all comes 'round in a circle. Go figure.
Here's a question for all you car loving film buffs out there.
What was the make of car seen being driven by Robert Duvall in George Lucas' movie 'THX1138'? (Dystopian view of a future society living underground...)
I watched it years ago and I do remember the car looking similar to one of these Le Mans racers however it sounded like a gas turbine - which was probably added in post production.
Yes! That vicious-sounding gear change! I also love the sound right before; that brutal flat-12 snarling in protest when Elford downshifts for the chicane! The 917 Porsche has to be one of the most glorious-sounding racing cars in history.
The hell with NASCAR,this is what real racing is all about.any redneck can drive in a circle and turn left. Also,NASCAR's cant drive on the road, these cars can. Also,in the movie, the drivers/cars are not billbords for Recees cups or HOME DEPOT,Just oil and tire companies, like it should be.Plus, lets see any NASCAR drivers drive in rain/dark without track lights, just those high beams on the cars.NASCAR SUCKS!
Thank you.BTW,Im looking into getting a replica 917 from race-car-replicas.c..(in the number 21 car Mc Queen drove)to bad one of those fantasic flat 12's are not available(at least for less than the the cost of the stimulus bill). But I wll drop in a 3.8ltr twin turbo in it,good for about 480 HP.Cant wait to pull up to the gas pumps in that!
Yeah 66and04, that lontail 917 pulling onto the straight at the end of the first lap was always my favourite bit too! They really were proper racing cars back then. What a brilliant film.
As is edited here is as how I always watched the film. It was only the noises and the race footage that I was interested in. Thank you for posting this! What a fantastic film, if only for immortalizing the epic sound of a flat 12 917 at full song!!
@luisronaldofigo if your a racing fan than this is one of two movies you have to see. This is "Le Mans`` from 1970 I think. And Grand Prix from 1966. Two truly wonderful and truthful movies about motor racing.
@keravankauhu I had a girlfriend watch it with me once and she said "There isn't a real story...it's just pretty much racing...", to which I replied, "duh...yeah, that's what makes it so great." :-)
@gurlsingerfan lol even though i agree with you on that, i bet thats part of why you said "you had" cause your making her watch racing movies with no story haha
You could have just uploaded the 1970 24h of Le Mans. Same thing, just with commentary.

@galoon Yes. Absolutely vicious. Great word for the sound. Stunning. Wild. Beautiful.

@owlcritic
I've seen 917's at Goodwood Festival Of Speed and standing next to one when it starts up is amazing and just a little bit scary....
TK42138 2 years ago
Man,that would be so awsome,Id give any thging to see and hear the real deal, live.

I don't think the 917's flat 12 could be any more orgasmic

Yeah 66and04, that lontail 917 pulling onto the straight at the end of the first lap was always my favourite bit too! They really were proper racing cars back then. What a brilliant film.
Wobbletron 2 years ago 2
@Wobbletron , The longtail 917 did not finish the race either!

Did u make this on Movie Maker? I am having a bit of trouble plz help?

The sound the Porsche makes at 3:39 is amazing!!! Gives me chills every time i hear it.

Totally agree. That engine sounds like the universe being jumpstarted or 'The Stig' gargling with magnesium....
TK42138 2 years ago 3
As is edited here is as how I always watched the film. It was only the noises and the race footage that I was interested in. Thank you for posting this! What a fantastic film, if only for immortalizing the epic sound of a flat 12 917 at full song!!

Albertomexico1 1 year ago
@Albertomexico1 true but i think Grand Prix is also right up there.
erwinruys 1 year ago
@erwinruys yea it is; Grand Prix is a damn good movie. Thank God they have not made a new version of either movie. Yet.

@luisronaldofigo hmm let's say yes xd

@luisronaldofigo if your a racing fan than this is one of two movies you have to see. This is "Le Mans`` from 1970 I think. And Grand Prix from 1966. Two truly wonderful and truthful movies about motor racing.
f1matt 1 year ago
@f1matt Unless you dig the "Fast and the Furious". In that case, I wont recomend it.

@luisronaldofigo yeees, it is pretty good? but it has too much talking:(
keravankauhu 1 year ago
@keravankauhu I had a girlfriend watch it with me once and she said "There isn't a real story...it's just pretty much racing...", to which I replied, "duh...yeah, that's what makes it so great." :-)
gurlsingerfan 1 year ago 58
@gurlsingerfan lol even though i agree with you on that, i bet thats part of why you said "you had" cause your making her watch racing movies with no story haha
CrashBandikoot7 10 months ago
@CrashBandikoot7 hee, hee, yeah....she never really took to my TV set being tuned to SPEED channel 24 hours a day! :-)

@gurlsingerfan haha if they cant hang, let them walk
CrashBandikoot7 10 months ago
@luisronaldofigo The story kind of sucks but who cares, the racing, the cars and the way it was captured on film is mind blowing.
