  • Coughcoughcough...

  • this is the song that brought the Associates to my attention and to my mind

    never bettered or equaled

  • Brilliant song and the question if Sulk was better. It was more entrancely.

  • This song is pure drugs.

  • still sounds as wonderfully disturbing as it did when i first heard it all those years ago.

  • ……. kymm00, thank you, thank you, THANK you for this treatment of Billy MacKenzie's otherworldly music. You're clearly an avid fan of The Associates, too. What a loss his passing was. I often visit the Be In Art site my(s)elf. Instant Facebook re-post. Cheers ~ (•8-o

  • @Clematisian Thank you for watching and sharing + for being one of the few appreciative fans of a band that deserved so much more!

  • this is different from the version on 4th drawer down, isn't it?

The 12" had another version on the b-side which I never heard. Is that what this is? Or am I losing my mind?

  • @emberglance

It is actually the standard Fourth Drawer Down version, the same as the A side of the 12".

"Q Quarters (Original)" is the version on the b-side. It's a lot more empty, just the bass, drums, that submarine sound and the freaky high pitched distortion, barely any vocal harmonies and no double tracking, the guitar intro is barely audible, however, the coughing is there.

The guitar and synths over the verses is missing. It's a great mix, well worth trying to get hold of a copy.

  • i'm not much into fan videos or modern graphics set to older music but this is very good, a great collection of images you've put together for a clasic track

  • Love the images youve put together for Q quarters, really fits the mood of the song. Love the earlier material of Billy and of course Alan Rankin not to forget.

  • Thank you for watching :] Yes, the two were fantastic individually, but combined they were amazing!

  • '.......instinct find shelter/cowering in the foliage/detour reservoirs.......' the genius of billy mac. 4th drawer down is the greatest album of that year, i swear. thanks for this.

  • Yes, I agree! It's an amazing album, and I think may even prefer it over Sulk.

  • Sulk is their best album by a mile, but this track is in my all time top 5 of theirs.

I like the images a lot btw- Ta for posting.

  • i like sulk too but much prefer fourth drawer down - creepy, eccentric and intense. electronic textures i've never heard anywhere else

  • Yes! Your explanation is perfect. That is exactly why I love Fourth Drawer Down. It's like the slightly darker and stranger brother of Sulk.

  • strange thing is, i believe it was originally a series of EPs they eventually decided to collect together on an album? i'm sure you know that anyway. if you're not already familiar with it, associates get a great few pages in Simon Reynolds' book about postpunk Rip It Up And Start Again. cheers

  • @chrisnoaro1 That's great. Did not know that. Thanks for the heads up! Will be sure to check it out.

  • @chrisnoaro1 I'm listening to this today precisely because of those pages.

  • Brilliant. The perfect video for this song. Wish someone could have had the vision to make this kind of vid in Billy's lifetime. And yes, this song is in my top ten too. Did you guess? :D Thank you for sharing this.

  • Anyone who has an Associates song in their top ten has excellent taste :] Thank you for the comment!

  • nice song, nice images!! :)
