This is pretty cool. With computers these days, everything is packed into this small machine and you can't really see much but with these older computers, you can actually take these tapes out, and look at everything and see how information is stored and get a better understanding of the whole concept.

LMAO @ file naming scheme comments...the majority of the world put up with that 8.3 scheme until 1995, where DOS was phased out of IBM PC compatibles :-) Many other platforms weren't much better either.

The PC compatibles in the early '90's were more than capable of using long file names. The only thing that was limiting them was FAT and DOS.

Sure, but using pure UNIX on an average user-grade PC wasn't even an option, hardware wise. Who had SCSI disks and more than 4 MB of RAM on a 286/386SX class machine?

If long file names was your ultimate goal then installing an early version of Minix or Linux should have done the trick.

Exactly...only to have no interesting software to use it afterwards. No games, no GUI, etc. unless you liked hardcore C and Fortran compilers. Not the ideal choice to give a 12 yo boy "But daddy, all my friends use this DOS thing that has these cool games with colors and sounds, and is a lot easier to..." -"STFU kiddo, you WILL use hardcore UNIX and MINIX because they are REAL OSes and have LONG filenames" :-p

Their paper tape looks like a rip off from Conrad Zuse's machine that used punches in surplus film reel. Good lord, you have to toggle the boot loader in every time the power goes out. Actually, it wouldn't of been that hard to make a ROM for the bootloader, in fact, you shouldn't need to, CORE memory is like bubble or USB memory in the sense, it survives power outage. Reading it is destructive however, like dynamic ram, and reads have to be followed immediatly by writes.
