The United States Governments through modern history have started more wars than any other single country...and we are supposed to the the champions of freedom and democracy and self governance.
Among other errors...it was the hubris of the English generals who could not admit making a mistake on the timing of the covering artillery...and the blind misguided obedience of the Anzac commanders in not standing up to the English...and thousands killed...for what?
I blame both the politicians and the soldiers for all the wars. 'But without him, How would Hitler have condemned them at Dachau? Without him Caesar would have stood alone, He's the one who gives his body As a weapon of the war, And without him all this killing can't go on. He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame, His orders come from far away no more, They come from here and there and you and me, And brothers can't you see, This is not the way we put the end to war.'
I've never had to face the test and am too old to be conscripted now, but I don't want to live in a world where nothing is worth fighting for. God Bless the men and women with the courage to have the fight.
@helenlovesjohn Easy for you to say, isn't it? You don't actually have to fight. To me there are no worse cowards than those who send others off to war. The truth is the entire human race is doomed and damned to hell, and one of the primary reasons is the mindset that war ever, ever solved or proved anything worthwhile.
@absoftitanium It is true I was never a soldier and I hope my children never are. I have been an operational policeman for almost thirty years and suffered many injuries and faced death many times in the line of duty. I don't take the threat of risking anyone's life lightly. You may be right, we may all be doomed, but I'd rather go fighting to protect my family than as a slave of some despot. There will always be those who feel that they can take what they wish through force. I choose to defend.
algardus: my comments are not aimed at the brave men who serve in the armed forces. But if politicians send you to fight and possibly die, they should be honest about the reasons they are doing so and it should be a moral reason not greed or for political gain. This comment is posted the day after another 2 brave men fell in Afghanistan. I salute them and I am proud of them but I will never forgive Tony Blair and the rest.
As you listen to this song feel proud for the many brave men in the armed forces but please remember the idiots (politicians) that are in charge of them. They were in charge in 1914-18 and they still are to this day as Iraq, Afghanistan to name two bear sad witness. Our idiotic 'leaders' should be made to listen to this song every day but I don't suppose they will see sense even then. I praise the brave lads who serve their country but I despise the idiots that oder their deployment.
I serve proudly in the defence force, and as much as I disliked Howard I would still have been proud to have served in any of our deployments of recent times. Yes Iraq was wrong to start but once started it needed to be finished, Afghanistan is a mess and we chose to attack them along with the rest of the world so once again by rights we should set them on their feet again.
Never forget, we are a volunteer army we fight by choice, it is our job.
As I walk along through life, I look at the faces of the people that pass by, and I ask myself, do they care? and I wonder if they ever think about why they have such a wonderful country, and if they remember, then I see the old men at the RSL and many of them have served, and I smile and I think, yes, how can we forget, and even as they dissapear into history, their spirit remains, and every ANZAC day, we honor them. Lest We Forget!
God Bless the Aussies; my Irish grandfather's regiment (The Irish Guards) also served in Gallipoli. As you lift your pints tonight, know there's a Yank who acknowledges the bravery of the ANZACS, from The Great War to Vietnam.
Thanks you if only one american knows we have been there through every conflict from WWI to Iraq than at leas on American has repect. Doesn't mean we like you though.
I'm no pacifist, but this song is beautiful and reminds us all of the horrors of war, whatever our political or philosophical beliefs. A good slideshow for a brilliant song.
Ugh, beautiful. Every time Im drunk I listen to this song. This video made it perfect though. Honestly, the slideshow was beautiful. Absolutely perfect. Heart-touching and perfect.
Excellent lyrics Eric (applauds and awards will be forthcoming)after you've lost everything of course!(life usually))But !Glad to say! McGowan sings it wi' the grit 'n' bitterness which i think you meant!!

They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning.
We will remember them
Lest we forget....

There are some cultural gems which ought be be experienced by everyone.
As the best non-political anti-war song ever written, this has to be near the top of the list.
Hate the war, not the warrior.
