Makes me miss my little Ding. Yes, they are social creatures, getting two is perfect, but at the sametime. Introducing a new friend for them is very difficult and they tend to attack the newcomer. If you do, do a brand new habitat for them so the territorial difficulties are removed.

Your degu will sit by you like that? My degus run all over the place The only way I really get to hold them when they're still is when one of my baby degus gets out of the cage through the cage bars. They get scared afterwords and let you hold them.

Not to be harsh but that degu spends most of its time chewing the hair on its paws and they're clearly quite bald in the video. Very much a bad thing. The degu must spend a lot of time bored, depressed or otherwise unhappy due to lack of a degu friend :(

My point is to call them a "natural cross" is entirely wrong. A mule is a cross between a horse and a donkey. The horse and donkey actually had to mate to make a mule (which is sterile as most crosses are). A guinea pig and squirrel never get near eachother to make a degu, thus no cross involved. I get what you mean though, that they look like both of those (I usually say they're like a squirrel and chinchilla myself)

They're relatives of guinea pigs and chinchillas although there's really nothing else like them. They're very intelligent. They're awake pretty much whenever you are since they take little cat naps. They're also super active and love to chew things although I've had no problem training them to not chew things outside of their cage. They're also very social. You can get only one which will bond very strongly to you but it's an unhealthy bond of desperation. So get 2+

If the degu is kept alone, the bond with the owner is much stronger. They'll want to sleep with you, talk to you, groom you. Not too sure it's healthy though as how would you like it if you had no one who could play the same games as you, speak with you or keep you company, etc?

Hm, don't chase it otherwise it associates your hand with predators. Let it smell you and reward it with a small treat when it comes up to you. Also, try not to pick a Degu up from above as they are naturally afraid of tings coming from above. This is because their natural enemies are birds of prey.

Sounds good but if you plan on getting a degu, you should know that they should never be kept alone. Degus should live in pairs or groups. I dont know about chipmunks, but Chinchilla are more solitary than degus.

hmm i think there is no age when this procedure isn´t bad for the male degu. sometimes you have luck and sometimes the degu is to shocked.

At first i had as well male and female bute the male couldn´t handel the operation, 2 weeks later he died an it was horrible for me to see how hard it has been for him, but the female degu und the little babies gave him a lot of comfort at the last days. Ask your vet what he thinks, and if he already had done such an operation at a degu.

Just start to let them become used to your hands, your face, your smell. Hide always some favorite snacks in your hands and let them try to get them (at first just feed them with your hands they need a lot of energy so feed them often). Play with them in the cage. At first do Not stroke them, do it like them bop the cheek or the neck they like it.
