John was embarrassed by this album because all the tracks were recorded at the wrong speed, making them sound higher-pitched than they should. however, this particular track sounds normal, so I think it was probably resampled. John said that if you must listen to this album, please listen to the resampled tracks and not the originals.
If it was released, I'd buy it, because I buy every Mountain Goats release. I don't see the point in John recording covers though - for one thing he'd have to pay royalties.
This particular example is a bit like Tom Waits covering Sweet Child o' Mine.
Kafka requested that his best friend burn all his writings upon his death, thankfully he didn't. The artist doesn't always know what's best. The art exists independently of the artist, it's a living breathing life all its own. As much as I respect John Darnielle, I'll determine what should and shouldn't be listened to. And this, definitely should.

I haven't looked for this album and I wish I could scold you for not respecting his privacy, but I just can't resist a new Mountain Goats song.
