I just put this on my 50lbs lab.. She is a terrible dog for the first 30 minutes of every walk we've ever gone on, pulling and not listening...
I put the gentle lead on her, and literally within 2 minutes of our walk (first time use) she was walking beside me and looking at me for direction... Highly recommend thus to anyone with a problem walker.. And I've only used it once
I don't like how hard you have to set the neck piece over the dog's trachea. It's too much pressure on the trachea, IMO. It doesn't collapse it, but it does, most certainly, put pressure on it.
EXCELLENT collar for my male great dane; when I tried it years ago on my girl danes they would simply stop in their tracks and try to take it off regardless of treats or the walk. It just isn't for everybody but for dogs like my male it works like magic. I think Cesar Milan is great, my favorite advice of his is to consistently jerk and release every time your dog tries to look or sniff something that could make them pull. If you have strong dogs like me this is so important, will save your arm!
Great dane male story cont. The gentle leader WORKS ON ARTHUR!!! I grabbed a handful of treats, put the leader on Arthur with no mercy like it shows in this video (don't be anxious about it, calmly put it on but quickly), put a leash on it and went for a walk. He went WILD a lot the first few minutes, but every time he did that I would slow down, have him sit and gave him a treat. After 5 minutes he pulled a lot less and had a smaller tantrums, barely pulled at all after 20 minutes!!
I had ditched using it with my female great danes a couple years ago, I found that a consistent use with a nylon martingale collar worked great. HOWEVER, I bought a massive 7 month old male back in April, he came as if he were TRAINED to pull. At 10 months he is now 130 pounds. It has been HELL trying to get him to heel using a martingale, we start obedience class tomorrow. I've pulled back out my gentle leader collar but lost the video on how to put it on, THANK YOU for posting this!
I just ordered this off Amazon. I really hoping it works (crosses fingers). My dog, Bubba is a 1/4 Husky and 3/4 Wolf. So he is very, very strong. After I walk him in a normal collar, it acctualy hurts to move my fingers. I have to pull so much!
@JesseCullen5 Oh my gosh, I know what you mean about the fingers! I have a 4year old Lab, who is massive-45kgs for a Lab. He is so strong, and the choke chains did nothing to hold him back. Hope u love the head collar, I got one only a week ago, and I wish I bought one sooner. I works!
@MrsShekin I got it like a few weeks ago. It's amazing!!! He didn't like it at first but he got used to it with lots of blueberries(I know its weird but he loves them!). My fingers don't hurt anymore after walks! It's also good because I go hikeing and theres a little pond with a tiny bridge and he usualy jumps into the pond, but now he can't! Thanks!
Dog head halters are stupid because they don't teach the dog anything, they know when it is on and off, dogs usually hate them and flip out and try and get it off, that and you risk spinal injury to your dog if you use one. What is really stupid about Haltis and Gentle Leaders is that they are not even dog training. All they are is a restraint to subdue dogs. We have seen dogs with their noses raw like hamburger from rubbing their noses on the cement to get the horrible thing off of their face.
@CensorshipFTL it depends on the dog and owner. Most people want a quick fix now and this is one way of doing it. If it is fitted correctly there wont be any harm done.
I have one that I use for my wolfdog and cause she is skittsh and spooks easy it makes it easy to walk her.
@CensorshipFTL They are a useful tool for those of us who do not have the time to teach a dog to heal on a loose leash. What has a Head Collar got to do with a poor dog being allowed to rub its nose on the concrete until it was red raw? That has more to do with supervision. If you are walking with a Halti, you are moving forward, and I don't see how a dogs nose can meet with concrete in this situation. Where was the owner?
That sounds like more the failure of the owners than the leash. The point is, when it is used correctly, you don't need to use force so there's no reason why there should be any spinal injury. It is a training tool, not just a restraint. The dogs can still open their mouths. It worked great for my dog and I know many other people who've had the same experience. Not everything is going to work for everybody and you still need to learn how to properly use it.
What a life-saver! My lab didn't like it at first but now she see it and gets excited for walk time! No more pulling me down the street, yanking my arm and, most importantly, running after cars.
Great short on the GL Collar. We use it for our bouncy GSD as well as our very nervous Rat Terrier. It has done wonders for both dogs! I feel it is the safest and most humane collar available out there.
@elbob17 I hear you, my golden retriever is a retard too, I've tried everything and our walks are still a total nightmare, this damn thing doesn't work either.
THe Gentle Leader is like the best thing ever! Forget choke chains and all that mess, this is the best product for our Golden, who likes to pull a lot. Its not that she is bad or anything, she just gets wayyyy to excited and wants to meet everyone she see's! She is a Golden afterall!! LOL
The Gentle Leader has been the most amazing product for us and our dog Addie! My parents are getting older, and couldn't take her out on a walk, ever. Now they can easily go for a stroll around town whenever, because they're not afraid of getting injured.
GLs do nothing to TEACH a dog how to walk nicely (and BTW there is a difference between heeling and walking nicely). All they do is FORCE the dog to walk nicely. Take that thing off and then show me what happens. The dog will most likely revert back to pulling on the lead!!!
When I train my dogs I intend to bring them to a point of contention beyond the leash/equipment. My dogs perform without any special contraptions because I TRAIN them.
yeah, normally I'd think so too, but I'm trainign my dog for half a year now, and nothing happens... it just gets worste every day... the more gentle I'm with her the more pulling and running away I get!
I put our gentle leader on our neighbor's golden who would pull my arm off if I went on a 10 minute walk with her. I could hold the lead with my pinky within 3 minutes. She got the idea that when she went too far ahead, her head was pulled to the side so she couldn't walk like she wanted to.
Within a few minutes, she wasn't having her head pulled at all. She stayed right by me. When i took the muzzle part off and just left the neck part, she pulled signifigantly less than when she did before.
@angeldanielmx Why would it be bad for a dog to sniff a bit? That is as important to him as seeing is to us since their sense of smell is so sophisticated. We can't take the Cesar method to be too punitive and controlling or our dogs will have no joy in life.
It depends on how strict you want/need to be with your dog...they are having a relaxed walk and he is not pulling her down the walk. She didn't really show how it gives you more control but it really does. This made a huge difference with my dog who was also a very energetic strong dog. When it's used correctly it really eliminates the tug of war with your dog and you can both enjoy the walk. When he got older I didn't need to use it anymore. It's also great for training.
I just got a Gentle Leader and tried it on my 60-lb Shepherd-Boxer mix tonight. It was an incredible change! He no longer lunges, runs ahead of me, or tries to drag me down the street. He stayed directly beside me, walked nicely and for the first time, I didn't have to wear an arm brace while walking him (carpal tunnel), which was always a problem before.
yeah and if they see you with a prong they say you are abusive. What suck is that Cesar millan use the the shock collar prong collar and does not get shit for it! but some people ask me if my dog is waring a muzzle
The new version has the "Gentle Leader" name clearly printed on it. Seems to help with that misinterpretation. (We have had that same stupid question asked of about our GSD when she wears hers.)
First, i see no bond in walking in this video, the dog is always ahead, now i understand why the apparatus is used. There's no leadership to begin with.
Both my dogs use a gentle leader- it's really a fantastic training tool- it actually almost totally cured my dog's fear aggressiveness, and she walks beautifully with it. I'm never walking her with a collar again.
Great collar - trying it out at the moment.

The strap around the muzzle should not fit tight, the dog should be able to open his mouth to pant and be able to eat.
