This is one of the earliest Folias written. it is categorized as the 1st type of folia. The 2nd type was developed by the 17th C French JB Lully and is the longest remembered musical theme in Western music.
This anonymousl folia is called the Folia di Rodrigo Martinez and was written in 1490. The piece has comical lyrics about a fool named Rodrigo Martinez, who mistakes geese for cows. Most believe that fool alluded to was the Portuguese King Don Sebastion who lost Portugal to Spain.
Musica molto bella e ben eseguita. Nel nostro video di risposta eseguiamo un trotto medievale con la nostra orchestra di 400 ragazzi. Ancora complimenti.
OMG! Jordi Sevall has the bow I used to own!!! I'd recognize that ivory frog anywhere. I wondered where it ended up after I had my accident. Now I know.

@anisometropie@anisometropie Sorry it took me so long to reply. I've been without a computer for a while. I was hit by a drunk driver. Snapped my neck at C4/C5. I'm now a tetraplegic (quadraplegic in the US) wheelchair jocky.
Accident aside, I couldn't hope for the bow to have a better home! I think you've now motivated me to see if I can find out who got my Viola, alto & tenor gambas, and my del Jesu viola d'amore.
This piece is from "el cancionero de palacio", a spanish (well, mostly Castilla at the time of the Catholic kings) song book, and it has a simple text. Hesperion XX (they were XX befre the cahnge of century) has the vocal version in their disc "EL Cancionero de Palacio".
And the troll-looking guy is Pedro Estevan, a percussionist who is really hypnotic to watch, an incredible performer :D
You're not completely wrong, H101. Some spanish composers of the time went to america and developed their styles there. So there is something of this in latin-american ancient music.
Isabel de Castilla and Fernando de Aragón are known as the "Catholic kings". They ruled the spanish provinces of Castilla, León and Aragón in the period where the moors were expelled from the south of Spain and Columbus arrived to America. Juan Carlos de Borbón is today's spanish king...about 5 centuries later if I'm not mistaken, and yes, he is catholic also.

I think this piece is called "Rodrigo Martinez" from el cancionero de palacio as somebody said before. Jordi Savall is incredible as always
crataegus1976 3 years ago 3
It's "Rodrigo Martinez" but in a strange version because this is a Lyric Song. With the lyric it's just incredible.
jokin20a 3 years ago 2
In fact this is a "folia" version (a kind of improvisation over a known theme) and because of that this version doesn't include the lyrics.

True, but this style is far too archaic. Most of the european music developed in South America was Baroque.

The Catholic Kings...but isn't King Juan Carlos de Borbon a catholic, or was it Catholic Kings ruling at the same time?
